It was nine thirty that night when Craig received Tweek's text message. He'd been wrapped up in his covers attempting sleep though it was a complete failure, he just wasn't tired yet. So for him to get this odd message from Tweek, telling him to meet him outside of the school, Craig was more than intrigued as to why.
Never the less, he threw his shoes and jacket on and headed out into the night, successfully dodging his parents though he doubted they'd have given him a second glance even if they had seen him. It was colder out than he'd expected, he never usually ventured out unless it was dire, after all, he had everything he needed back at home.
The streets were dark, and though they were lit by the street lights and the televisions flickering from scene to scene within the houses Craig passed, it was still a little eerie. Since he had to walk all the way to the school grounds on foot, it took him a while, despite his fast pace, but once he'd finally reached his destination, all he wanted was to find out where the hell Tweek was so that he could get back to the warmth of his bed, only now did he feel like he'd be able to sleep. Typical.
But Tweek was nowhere to be seen, even after Craig walked around a bit trying to spot the disheveled blonde mess of hair. His phone vibrated inside his pocket and only then did Craig mentally face palm at not having the idea to use it sooner, but once he'd unlocked his phone and opened Tweek's message, he was left completely flabbergasted.
'You look so dumb down there.'
Looking up from his screen, Craig scanned the area, feeling stupid as he did so since he still hadn't a clue where his friend was hiding, and really he was just growing tired. He decided to reply to Tweek's message, coming to the conclusion that finding him was hopeless without him revealing himself.
'Hiding huh? Remind me what grade you're in?'
Tweek's reply was instant and Craig was sure he'd heard childish snickering in the distance though he was too unimpressed to look.
'I'm in plain sight dumbass, you're just not looking properly.'
'I'll leave you.' Craig warned.
'Wow. Look up."
And that was exactly what Craig did, taking Tweek's instructions a little too seriously by looking straight up at the sky, completely missing the shadowy figure standing on the west side of the roof. It was when his name was shouted that he managed to pinpoint the source, his eyes following the sound and in turn, found Tweek waving at him.
Cursing under his breath, Craig unenthusiastically made his way over, stopping close enough to look up at Tweek who was leaning over to look down at him.
"Climb up!" Tweek called down, his voice echoing across the deserted school grounds.
"Why?"
"Jesus Christ, just do it."
Before Craig had the chance to protest, Tweek's head had already disappeared from Craig's sights, leaving him to stare up at the nothingness with a huff of annoyance. When he realised Tweek wasn't going to pop back out anytime soon, he soared out a way up, one which would less likely end with him falling and making a fool out of himself.
It was quiet on the roof for Tweek as he sat on the cold surface, gazing up at the night sky while he listened to Craig's infuriated grunts as he climbed his way up, seemingly having trouble. Of course Tweek could've told him about the ladder on the other side of the wall that had been left there, but then again, Craig was almost up and telling him would be useless now.
He barely glanced over when Craig finally made it up, glaring at Tweek as he came to sit down beside him, though making sure to leave some distance since he was still trying to catch his breath and wanted to play it off. They fell into comfortable silence which was strange after all that had happened between them, but for some unknown reason, just sharing one another's presence was enough.
There was no intrusive sounds or lights to ruin this, no people around to tell them to come down, it was just Craig and Tweek and the night that surrounded them, the stars in the sky and the moon a quarter shadowed. Tweek didn't want to look over to the person beside him, he didn't want to see Craig as he was, because he was reminiscing of the first time they were up here back in tenth grade.
He was feeling the exact things he'd felt the first time, this warmth in his chest despite the cold air around them. He wanted to smile but he couldn't because the captivating moment had him too wrapped up to be able to express the happiness he was feeling. And if he was only allowed to feel this way for a short amount of time, then he didn't want to ruin it, because once again being up here with Craig was something so meaningful to him that anyone else would have distorted it.
"Why're we up here?" Craig drawled, looking away from the stars to stare questionable at the side of Tweek's face, but Tweek refused to look at him, he wasn't ready to lose his happiness. "It's late and I'm cold."
"We never finished our talk."
"Okay... but why do we have to do it up here? In the cold, at school, on a roof, in the cold..."
"Because, if I get too embarrassed I can push you off the edge." Tweek said, cutting Craig's whiny rambling off.
"As if you could." Craig muttered. "Go ahead, talk."
Looking down at his trembling hands, Tweek breathed in deeply, his exhale a shudder that made him feel stupid. "Okay," He nodded, building the courage to get this off his chest. "I planned all of the things that I wanted to say to you but now that you're here I can't remember a single thing..."
Silently watching from the side, Craig tucked his hands inside his pockets, releasing a breath that fogged in the cold air, seemingly out of impatience though in reality he was beginning to feel a hint anxiousness.
"Being your friend is what's most important to me. Christ I've known you almost my entire life, I think I'd beat myself up forever if I managed to screw that up." Tweek began, pushing through his nerves though his voice was laced with every worry he felt. "But for some sick reason I've been cursed with these annoying feelings for you, and trust me I don't want them. I'd give an arm to get rid of them but they won't go and I don't know what to do. It's so stupid. I, I keep thinking that if maybe I tried hard enough I could get over you,
Shit, I'd rather it be Clyde or Token than you, no offence. With those two I could probably live with it, suppress a dumb crush until I don't feel it anymore but, fuck, it's you."
Daring a glance at Craig, Tweek fed on the noirette's weary expression, but he was listening and that was something. Looking away again, he sunk his fingers through his hair, not out of anxiety or frustration, but of out exhaustion. "I know it's not what you want to hear, Craig, but they aren't going to go away on their own. You're my best friend and I swear nothing will ever be more important than that but being around you isn't helping."
"Avoiding me isn't going to solve anything either."
"I know, I don't want to avoid you and I won't, but Christ we need to think of something before I lose my mind."
"A compromise."
Stiffly nodding his head, Tweek swallowed, his eyes finally meeting Craig's expressionless ones in an act that could only be described as a telepathic debate of the sort, two minds sharing ideas and solutions though in reality Tweek was shamefully admiring the blue that survived the darkness, while Craig was deep in thought for a way for them to go on. But how do they go on?
"Any suggestions?" Craig asked after a moment, coming up with nothing himself.
Again, Tweek nodded his head only this time shyly, feeling flustered though thankfully the night saved him from the embarrassment of Craig noticing.
"Well?"
"Okay, its dumb... don't flip out or anything, alright?"
"I won't."
"Promise?" Tweek urged. A deadpanned look and heavy sigh was his reply, which certainly wasn't good enough. "Promise me?"
"Fine, I promise."
When Tweek stood up and backed away, it was all Craig could do but to raise an unsure eyebrow and watch, his full attention on the blonde who was putting quite some distance between the two of them that when he finally spoke, Craig had barely heard it.
"We kiss and when it makes me realise that I don't like you, we can move on and forget about all of this." Tweek rushed out his sentence from the opposite side of the roof. He thought the gap between them would coat his embarrassment but it hadn't, though, if Craig was to flip his shit and attack him, at least Tweek could make his escape down the ladder in time to safely flee.
His awkwardly straightforward idea had been something he'd contemplated for the past hour that he'd been up here alone before Craig had arrived. It wasn't his first choice, nor his second, but it was his most likely to see some results, either positive or negative.
He wasn't expecting for Craig to sit there in place with a blank expression, and for a moment Tweek wondered whether he'd put too much distance between them that he hadn't heard. Thankfully he needn't repeat himself but Craig's reply left him in his own version of silence, and while Craig showed no emotion, Tweek had never felt so many emotions all at once.
