The night was young, cold, with a sky filled with stars that blinked dimly around a crescent moon. Everything about it was perfect, and to have Craig standing by the door, looking uncomfortable in his tuxedo as he expectantly stared at Tweek— In it's self, finalised the swaying of butterflies fluttering around inside of Tweek's stomach.
A moment of eye contact was shared between the two. A short moment of appreciation and admiration, before Tweek's parents entered the room to ruin the scene. Richard was carrying a stack of papers he'd been working on, but when he noticed his son standing by the open door, he set them aside. "Invite him in then, Tweek. It's cold outside, and it's making inside cold, too."
"We're leaving now." Tweek mumbled in response, as he casted his parents an irritated look.
"Oh, but don't you want some pictures with Craig?" His mom asked in a tone that clearly showed her lack of interest in taking any pictures. She only mentioned it because she'd watched so many movies where that line was said, so she figured she'd give it a try. "I'm sure if I looked, I could find a camera somewhere."
"You can use your cellphone to take a few quick pictures, honey."
"I've tried before, but It just shows myself looking downwards. It's all just a bit confusing, really."
"That's because you have it on front camera." Richard explained, pulling out his phone to demonstrate the ways of front and back camera to his wife.
As the engine of their ride gently hummed behind Craig's turned back, he met Tweek's embarrassed stare with a small smile. He didn't know why such a simple act had turned the blondes cheeks a flustered pink, but even still, Craig sort of liked it.
Whilst Tweek's parents talked amongst themselves, they hadn't noticed the two young adults leaving without a word. They entered the quiet night, with Craig subtly taking ahold of Tweek's hand to guide him over to the hummer that Token's rich parents had hired for the night. It was jet black matte, with a generous length that made it seem like an upgraded limousine.
The closer they came to the vehicle, the more audible the music was to their ears. When Craig took ahold of the handle to tug it open, he let go of Tweek's hand to allow him to get inside. The song mainly consisted of a prominent bass, vibrating the seats they sat on as it played through the speakers.
Inside, Token sat with his date, Ashley, pausing the conversation they were having to greet the two new arrivals. Clyde and Bebe were too busy singing to have even noticed them. As the vehicle set into motion, Tweek glanced out of the black out windows to see his mom closing the front door. One thing he appreciated the most about having parents with a lack of interest towards his social life, was the shortage of embarrassing moments.
"I'm surprised either of you decided to come tonight." Token mused over the music as he looked between Craig and Tweek. "I'm glad you did, though."
"Your tie is a little crooked, Tweek." Ashley pointed out as she gestured to the long, grey tie around his neck. Tweek had only ever seen this girl in the hallways, sharing nothing other than a short glance every now and then. So for her to shuffle over to where he was sitting, before reaching her tanned hands out to fix his tie, it was a little unusual. He knew she was only trying to be nice though, and awkwardly in return, he thanked her as he played with the end of his tie. Ashley was back to sitting beside her date, smiling to herself at the whispered compliments spoken in her ear, whilst Tweek went back to watching the houses passing by the misty window.
"Oh, I almost forgot!" Clyde suddenly said as he abruptly halted his finger guns to withdraw something from underneath his seat. The others curiously waited for him to present his gift, but when he finally revealed a relatively small bottle of vodka, their eyes each lit up with joy. "It's not much, but it's all my dad had in at the time."
"That's fine," Bebe assured as she took ahold of the clear bottle to swirl its contents about. "We'll be classy drinkers for the night."
"I'm not sure drinking vodka straight out of the bottle, could make anybody classy." Token raised an eyebrow as he watched the blonde girl taking a sip. He wasn't a big fan of sharing drinks, but when the bottle was passed over and he hesitantly stared at the brim, he thought, what the hell.
On the other hand, when it was Tweek's turn to receive the bottle, he bluntly refused it with an upturned nose. There was no way he was getting germs from all of these people, and he didn't care how much of a bore he seemed in the process.
The hummer pulled up beside South Park High School, and when the group took a step outside, seeing the lights strobing down from the entrance as other prom attendees headed inside, passing looks of excitement were shared amongst one another. Bebe was the first to speak up, after taking ahold of Clyde's hand to drag him over to the party, with a grin spreading across her pretty face. "What're we waiting for! Let's go already!"
With a chuckle, Clyde allowed himself to be dragged away, sparing only a fleeting look over his shoulder to his friends. "She's right." Token said as he watched the couple heading inside. "It's freezing out here."
"And my hair is getting ruined." Ashley added, patting her hair down unsuccessfully. "Let's gets some food before it all goes."
"Alright." Her date nodded with a grin. His brown eyes lingered on the girl for a moment, before flickering over to his friends. "You guys coming with?"
"Ye—"
"We'll catch up." Craig replied, interrupting Tweek.
Suspiciously, Token looked between the two of them. Neither had told him yet about the change in their friendship, though surely after tonight, he'd know for sure. "We'll see you inside, then."
When they'd disappeared out of sight, Craig slowly turned to Tweek to look him in the eye. Something in the way he did so, caused Tweek's mind to get lost in the paleness of his irises as they steadily connected.
"How're you feeling?" Craig asked as he combed his fingers through his hair. "Are you nervous?"
"I wasn't until you said that."
"Just ignore all of the people there. Nobody's going to be paying any attention to us, anyway."
"If I start feeling too claustrophobic and say I can't breathe, will you stand outside with me for a while?"
"No, I'll make you go alone, whilst I dance by myself." Craig drawled in a sarcastic manor. "Obviously I'll go with you."
"Okay..." Tweek inhaled with relief as he looked towards the entrance. "Then let's do this."
It was darker inside than either of them had been expecting. Even Craig had to admit though, that Wendy had done a pretty good job at decorating. The ceiling was covered with tiny lights that looked like stars, with a netted canopy that held up hundreds of white and silver balloons. Fake vines ran up along the lengths the walls, leading into a flowered archway where people had their photos professionally taken. Somehow, they'd even managed to mask the scent of sweat that usually haunted the gym. It wasn't obvious in the slightest, that the prom committee was working with a tight budget, aside from the inexperienced DJ across the other side of the room.
Both Craig and Tweek had been standing side by side, motionless as they took in their surroundings, until Tweek slipped his hand into Craig's. At first, the paranoia of people noticing got the better of Craig, and he flinched at the contact, but then as he looked to Tweek's unsure expression, his hand tightened around his dates hand.
They were out in public, holding hands, and though not a single person was giving them even a first glance, this was a big step up for the both of them. Inside, Tweek's chest was tight with nerves as Craig led him further through the gym. His anxious eyes roamed around his peers, but then, he found himself watching the side of Craig's face, with the decorations in the background, and suddenly his thoughts wandered to how nice Craig looked tonight. It was a change to see him in something other than his usual blue hoodie, and what a beautiful change it was.
Everyone around them was laughing and dancing, having the best night of their lives. It was hard for even an introvert to feel anything other than happy. The music faded, and as Craig stopped walking to carefully watch Tweek, a more suitable song came on.
"Do you want to dance?" Craig hesitantly asked.
"But you don't like dancing."
"Of course I don't." Craig frowned. "Who does, though? Besides, I'd look like a dick if i didn't dance on prom night."
"I don't mind not dancing if you don't want to."
"Jesus, Tweek." Craig huffed as he took ahold of Tweek's wrist to pull him in closer. The action stunned the blonde, but still, he could barely contain the excitement within as Craig's hands found his waist. Instinctively, his own hands rested upon Craig's shoulders, and in a wave of many other students, they swayed together in perfect sync.
There was nothing to look at, other than Craig's eyes that stared back at his own in a way that felt entirely too intimate. Eye contact had always felt like a personal thing for Tweek, but the way Craig was currently staring at Tweek, was beyond anything he'd ever experienced. It made him feel calm, and secure, in the arms of somebody special, and for that, Tweek shyly smiled.
Craig found himself falling for that smile, and despite fighting off the urge to match it with one of his own, his lips tugged upwards in defeat. Across the room, Token idly munched on the breadstick in his hand, with his attention fixated individually on his two friends dancing together. He just silently watched with an uncertain feeling, but when he saw Tweek laughing uncontrollably at something Craig had said, for some reason, Token found himself slightly grinning.
Coming up behind him, Ashley handed over a non alcoholic drink, searching for whatever had stolen her dates attention. When she noticed Craig and Tweek together, she had no doubt, that was what he'd been staring at. "God, I wish somebody would look at me that way, one day."
Taking the drink from her hand, Token subtly nodded in a agreement. Ashley was just a friend. He'd known her for only a year, and at this moment in time, couldn't imagine feeling the same way he'd felt about Nicole. But then again, a lot can change in a year. Token knows that now as he looks to Craig and Tweek one final time. "Somebody will." He told Ashley. "I promise."
Across the room, Wendy gave the go ahead to the DJ, receiving a nod of the head, before she turned back to Stan. He was wearing a blue tuxedo with a little, black bow tie that made him look completely adorable. Wendy couldn't stop herself from hugging into his side as the balloons from above were slowly released.
When people began to notice the rain of silver and white balloons falling down towards them, cheers collectively gathered around the room. It was a beautiful moment for everyone who experienced it, and as Tweek excitedly looked up towards the stars hidden by the balloons, Craig silently watched him. Again, their eyes met, and the smile Tweek was wearing, slightly faded as he thought only of the person he was dancing with.
Balloons skimmed past their heads, with people playfully batting them across the room. The night was still young, moderately cold, with a gym ceiling coated with fake stars. Everything about it was perfect. From the song that played in the background as the polished floor was surrounded by hundreds of balloons, to the faces around the room expressing pure happiness. But most importantly, as Tweek rested his forehead against Craig's, their time together was nothing short of perfect, making it undeniably, a night to remember.
