Carlos and Yana were also eager to see the photos. They hoped the pictures would reveal where their daughter and grandson had visited, and what memories they had together during their outing.
To protect the photos, Holden wrapped the package up tightly. There were layer upon layer of clear tape on the outside, and even more layers of plastic wrap inside.
Adam was struggling with the package. Gritting his teeth, he tugged hard at the unwrapped corners of the delivery box.
Yana, worried that he might hurt his hands, handed Adam a pair of scissors. "Sweetheart, don't open it with your hands. Here, use Grandma's scissors," she said.
Adam beamed, his chubby cheeks flushed. 'Thank you, Grandma.' Adam took the scissors and swiftly opened the delivery box.
He plopped himself down between grandma and grandpa, grinning from ear to ear as he held up the photos. "Grandma, Grandpa, look! These are the pictures we took during our trip. Aren't they great?"
However, Yana and Carlos's eager anticipation vanished, replaced by disdain the moment they saw Yosef.
After Yana learned what Yosef had done to her daughter, she developed a deep loathing for him.
She frowned when she saw Yosef beside her daughter again. With obvious displeasure, she turned to Adam and asked, "Sweetheart, why was he with you all during this trip?"
"Grandma, it was me who wanted to go on a trip with Mom and Dad," Adam said softly, biting his lip. "I've never been on a trip with them before."
Adam was taken away out of malice after birth, which led to years of separation from his biological mother. The woman who took him was his mother's enemy, thus raising him was more than anyone could ask. There was no way she would have shown him any kindness.
Yana's heart ached for this grandson. With Adam saying that, Yana could not bring herself to say anything further, no matter how uncomfortable she felt deep down.
Yana sighed, thinking, 'Due to Adam, Skylar and Yosef might never truly cut ties. Their relationship is just too tangled to unravel. Who knows if this is a blessing or a curse?
'But times have changed. If only we'd found Skylar sooner, she wouldn't have had to endure so much pain or cross paths with all those terrible people.
'Now that Skylar has so many family members protecting her, I suppose Yosef dares not do anything to her.' She felt slightly more at ease thinking of this.
However, Carlos did not share his wife's perspective. Although he cared deeply for his grandson, his daughter still mattered more to him.
Carlos said meaningfully, "Skylar, as the heiress of the Lambert family, no one can mistreat you. You should never suffer for anyone.
"You are you first and foremost, and everything else comes second." Carlos looked at her calmly.
Skylar immediately grasped the underlying message in her father's words. He did not want Skylar to compromise or keep putting up with Yosef just for Adam's sake.
Skylar looked her father in the eye and said solemnly, "Don't worry, Dad. I know exactly what I'm doing. I won't let anyone mistreat me."
"As long as you know what you're doing," Carlos replied.
Yana was completely baffled. "What are you two talking about over there?" she asked.
Adam looked up at his mom with wide, innocent eyes and asked, "Mom, did anyone mistreat you?
"Tell me who it was, and I'll go teach them a lesson!" He puffed up his cheeks and raised his tiny fists, looking all fired up.
Skylar, smiling gently at Adam, explained, "No one mistreated me, sweetheart. Grandpa just reminded me to be careful so that no one could bully me."
Adam nodded earnestly and said, "Grandpa's right, Mommy. You should listen to Grandpa."
