All he could do was glare, his lips trembling. Then his eyes rolled back, and he passed out.
David cried out in distress and urged the doctor to save Zachary.
Hudson smiled at David and said, "Mr. Stone, you're smart. I'm sure you know what to say, right?"
David knew full well this was a clear threat. He glanced at the two bulky bodyguards behind Hudson and lowered his head. With his stiff body, there was no way he could fight back.
Anger simmered under his fear, but in the end, he gave in. Through clenched teeth, he said, "Yes, Mr. Cooper. Don't worry."
"Good. I'll take my leave now," Hudson said. With that, he and those bodyguards walked out.
Skylar finished up her work and was about to head home. As she stepped out of her office, she noticed someone watching her with a weird intensity in their eyes.
She walked over. The employee quickly looked down.
"Why are you staring at me?" she asked.
"N-no, Ms. Lambert, I wasn't."
"It's okay. I'm not mad. I just wanna know what's going on."
Biting her lip nervously, the employee said, "Ms. Lambert, people are trashing you online. Maybe you should check social media yourself."
Skylar turned on her phone, only to be greeted by a flood of missed calls—so many that it just shut down.
After finally getting her phone to reboot, she checked her call log and saw missed calls from her parents and brothers.
She returned to her office and video-called her parents. "Mom, Dad, what's going on? Why did you call me so many times?"
Carlos smiled and said, "We were a little freaked out earlier, but everything's fine now."
Yana hurried over, looked her up and down. Once she saw Skylar wasn't hurt or crying, she finally relaxed.
"Skylar, why didn't you answer your phone? You scared us half to death."
"My phone died earlier," Skylar explained, choosing not to mention Zachary. She didn't want them to worry.
'I can handle Zachary myself,' Skylar thought to herself.
"Oh, I see, " Yana replied with a nod.
"Still, keep your phone charged next time, okay? We don't want another scare like this, okay?" Carlos said.
"Okay, I will. I need to take care of something. Talk to you later!"
"Alright."
After hanging up the phone, Skylar opened X and checked the trending topics. Sure enough, she saw her name. She quickly scrolled through all the related posts, piecing together what had happened.
Skylar wondered, 'Why would David suddenly be so kind as to record a video clearing my name?'
Trying to make sense of it, she called her two brothers back.
Now that the matter has been resolved, Blake didn't press further. He simply asked Skylar if she knew who was behind it all and who had helped her.
"No idea," she said.
"Alright. I'll look into it," Blake said. "And I'll let you know what I find."
"Okay." Skylar had just hung up with Blake when Victor called.
"Why didn't you answer your phone? You nearly gave me a heart attack!" Victor said, his face flushed with anger.
"Don't be mad. My phone died. I wasn't ignoring you," she explained.
He gave a low grunt.
Skylar softened her voice, suppressing a shudder. "Come on, Victor, don't be mad. When you get back, I'll cook your favorite dishes, alright?"
"Fine. Only this time. But don't let your phone die on me again. You hear?"
"Okay," Skylar replied softly.
Victor asked the same questions Blake had. Skylar gave the same answer—she didn't know.
He didn't push. "Alright. Just take care of yourself, okay? I'll come see you once I finish up here."
After a brief chat with Victor, Skylar called her chauffeur to take her home.
