The moment I'd been dreading finally arrived. Harris stormed through my door, demanding my son. I knew his power all too well—his connections with high-profile lawyers, his deeper pockets. If he fought for custody of Ethan, I wouldn't stand a chance.
My legs shook as I forced out the words, "Ethan isn't your son."
"You're lying, Darcy." He spat the accusation. "He's the same age as Layla. Our son didn't die that day—you stole him from me."
I clenched my fists, my voice icy. "You were the one who abandoned your child for Cindy's. You couldn't even be bothered to claim his body. A man like you doesn't deserve to call Ethan his son. He's mine. Only mine."
Harris's expression shifted, something like hope flickering in his eyes. "He is my son... my boy."
"I thought you were just pretending—playing the saint for some orphan. But after what I saw yesterday..." His jaw tightened, his gaze turning dark. "I won't let some spoiled rich bastard take my son from me, Darcy. You can't marry him—or anyone—or else—"
"Or else what?" I cut him off. "What exactly are you going to do, Harris? Aren't you living your perfect little life with Cindy and her daughter? Stay in your lane. Be happy with your family, and let me be with mine."
"Darcy," he rasped, voice rough. "Do you really think I'm happy with them?"
"That's how it looks."
"It's not true." His words were barely above a whisper. "My world fell apart the day the nurse handed me those divorce papers. I ran to your hospital room, but you were already gone."
He swallowed hard. "I didn't realize until you left—you're the only woman I've ever loved. Cindy... she doesn't compare."
A bitter laugh escaped me. "Then why are you playing house with her?"
"I told you—I'm trying to make up for my mistakes. I failed you. I didn't give you enough reason to trust me, so you blasted Cindy as my mistress in that viral post. She and her kid suffered because of it."
His voice cracked. "They had no one else. And after you left... I was alone. Cindy was just a placeholder, Darcy. You're the only one who ever mattered. Come back to me, and I swear I'll cut her out completely."
"Last night made it pretty clear who the placeholder was," I said flatly. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a clinic to run."
"Darcy—" His hand shot out, gripping mine. "Do you really not love me anymore?"
"No. That love died the day you left me to suffer through the hardest moment of my life alone."
His grip tightened. "Can't you let it go? For Ethan's sake?"
I smiled coldly. "It's because of Ethan that I can't forget. I can't forget waving at your car, nine months pregnant, while you stroked Cindy's hair. I can't forget enduring contractions alone while you coached her through labor. I can't forget them ripping my baby from my arms for the NICU while you played with her daughter. Some things don't fade, Harris."
I wrenched free and turned to leave, but he followed, eyes bloodshot, expression frozen. "Is this your final answer?"
"What are you talking about?"
His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "Then brace yourself, Darcy. I'm taking my son. I'll hire the best lawyers in the country. Soon, Ethan will be home with me. You don't stand a chance."
"Harris, you—"
A cold, familiar voice cut through the tension. "Who the hell do you think you are, threatening my woman?"
I spun around. Russo strode toward us, positioning himself between me and Harris. "Was last night's lesson not enough? Or do I need to remind you who you're dealing with?"
"Russo?" I whispered, stunned. "What are you doing here?"
His expression softened as he showed me his phone. "Our son texted me. Said his mom needed backup."
I glanced at Ethan's window—he was watching us, small face pinched with worry.
Russo winked. "Smart kid." Then he shoved me gently aside and stepped toe-to-toe with Harris. "Now. What exactly were you saying to my girlfriend?"
