"What are you doing here?" Victor frowned, clearly annoyed. Having Eliza show up at an event like this was basically asking for trouble.
Regina might be willing to tolerate the fact that there was no love between them, but she absolutely couldn't tolerate some mistress coming to her face and acting all high and mighty.
"Why can't I be here?" Eliza's eyes filled with tears. "I'm working so hard carrying our child, and you're about to marry someone else without even telling me."
Victor had kept quiet about the engagement precisely because he knew Eliza would cause a scene like this once she found out. He'd planned to tell her after everything was settled, but somehow, she'd found out anyway.
The way those store employees had been staring at them earlier already made Victor uncomfortable, and now with Eliza forcing him to explain himself, he was getting more and more irritated. His tone turned sharp.
"With the way you're acting right now, how could I possibly tell you anything? Just so you could come and make a scene like this?" Victor hissed.
Eliza froze, staring at Victor in disbelief.
Seeing her expression, Victor felt tired and rubbed his forehead. "Just go home, okay? It'll look bad if Regina sees you here. I'll talk to you when I have time, alright?"
Victor hadn't really given Eliza much choice in the matter either. Watching everything slip out of her control, Eliza dug her nails into her palms. 'Why is everyone so damn difficult?' she thought.
"Fine," Eliza said, backing down while wiping away her tears. "I'll wait for you to come talk to me. I won't bother you anymore. I'm sorry."
Victor watched Eliza turn and walk away, and his emotions got complicated. He knew his words had been harsh. The image of her pregnant figure looking so fragile stuck in his mind, and he took a deep breath.
'Once I marry Regina and secure my inheritance, everything else will work out. I can't mess this up now, so Eliza will just have to deal with it for a while,' Victor thought.
The moment Eliza left the bridal shop, her expression twisted with anger. She stormed home and found Leon sitting in his room playing with building blocks, looking completely carefree. That made her even more furious.
'Regina's about to become his official stepmother, and he's just sitting there like nothing's happening?' Eliza thought.
Eliza burst into the room and kicked over the tower Leon had built. "How can you just sit there playing? Your stepmother is about to take over this house, and you're not even trying to stop Victor?"
Leon saw how frantic she was getting and could tell she couldn't keep up her act anymore. He looked at her mockingly and said in his childish voice, "Whether it's some other stepmom or you, one of you is going to marry Dad anyway.
"I still hate you more though."
'This fake woman just pretends to be nice but never actually cares about me,' Leon thought.
Leon just wanted Serena to come back, but she was always so cold to him now, like she'd never come home again.
The thought made him feel sad, and when Eliza saw his expression turn gloomy, she instantly knew he was thinking about Serena again. All her built-up anger exploded, and she grabbed his arm and started dragging him downstairs.
"I don't care anymore. I'm taking you to Victor right now. If you throw a tantrum and refuse to let Regina into the house, we can definitely buy some time!" Eliza sneered.
"You crazy woman, let me go!" Leon struggled desperately under Eliza's grip, crying and trying to break free. But the strength difference between a kid and an adult was just too much. Even though he used everything he had, he couldn't get away.
When they reached the staircase, Eliza saw Leon gripping the railing tightly, so she just kicked him. "Get down there! You think you can fight me?"
Leon never expected her to actually kick him. The next second, his small hand lost its grip and he tumbled straight down the stairs.
Eliza gasped and snapped back to her senses. "Leon?" she called out frantically, but got no response. She stumbled down the stairs in a panic and found Leon lying motionless with a cut on his forehead and his eyes closed tight.
Her heart sank as she immediately pulled out her phone to call an ambulance. Picking on Leon a little was one thing, but if something serious happened to him, Victor and the entire Powell family would never forgive her.
Meanwhile, Regina had just finished trying on her wedding dress when Victor's phone started ringing. He looked down and saw Eliza's name on the screen, pressed his lips in annoyance, and hung up. But she called right back again.
After this happened three times, Regina said generously, "It's fine, just answer it. Maybe it's an emergency."
She turned back to the mirror to admire her own beauty. Truth was, Regina didn't really care much about Victor's business anyway.
She was just trying on a dress. She didn't need a man for that. Having Victor stand there with that sour look on his face would just kill her mood.
"Sorry, this might be about work," Victor said apologetically. "Let me handle this real quick. I'll be right back."
He walked out of the bridal shop with long strides and answered the phone with obvious irritation. "What do you want now? I already told you—"
"Victor, something happened to Leon!" Eliza's voice was shaking through tears. She gave him the hospital name and address. "He's still in surgery. You need to get here now."
Victor's mind went completely blank. He knew Eliza would never lie about something like this. Without thinking twice, he rushed back into the bridal shop to tell Regina what had happened.
Regina was touching up her lipstick and looked surprised by the news. She waved her hand dismissively. "If something's wrong with the kid, then go. Our photo shoot can wait another day."
'How convenient that this happens on the exact day we're supposed to take wedding photos. I wonder what's really going on behind all this,' Regina thought. But she didn't bother asking questions.
Victor rushed to his car and made it to the hospital in under twenty minutes. The surgery light was still glowing green above the operating room door. "What the hell happened? How did Leon suddenly end up like this?" he asked.
When Eliza heard Victor's questioning tone, she let out a sob, her face filled with pain. "It's all my fault. I wasn't watching Leon carefully enough, and he accidentally fell down the stairs."
Of course Eliza couldn't tell Victor that she was the one who'd kicked Leon down the stairs.
Leon had never been a good boy anyway and always gave her dirty looks. Now, she could say whatever she wanted. Even if Leon woke up and told Victor the truth, she could just claim the kid was lying about her.
Victor frowned and slumped down on the hospital bench. "Did you tell Serena about this?" She was still the kid's mother, after all. If she didn't show up now, that would be pretty heartless.
