Half an hour later, Serena rushed to the hospital after getting the news.
The surgery had just finished, and the doctor walked out of the operating room with a sigh, shaking his head. "The patient isn't in life-threatening danger for now, but his leg is badly injured.
"With this kind of fracture, he probably won't be able to run or jump normally for the rest of his life."
Serena had just arrived when she heard those words, and her breath caught in her throat.
The doctor continued, "I'm sorry, we did everything we could, but the child is so young. This is actually a pretty optimistic outcome considering the circumstances. Whether he'll be able to walk again depends on how well he recovers."
Victor hadn't expected it to be this serious. He felt terrible and reached out to support Serena. "I'm so sorry. I never thought something like this would happen."
Serena coldly glanced at Eliza, shook off Victor's arm, and walked over to slap her hard across the face.
The sharp crack echoed through the hallway, leaving Eliza stunned. When she finally snapped out of it, she immediately looked to Victor with pitiful eyes.
Victor knew Serena must be devastated right now, but he couldn't let her take it out on Eliza just because Leon got hurt. He frowned and stepped in front of Eliza protectively. "Serena, I know you're heartbroken about Leon, but this has nothing to do with Ellie."
"Nothing to do with her?" Serena's eyes flashed with bitter sarcasm. She'd originally thought Victor was just playing favorites with Eliza, but now she realized he was completely clueless.
'How could Eliza possibly care about our kids?' Serena thought. When Leon got hurt, only he and Eliza were home. Serena refused to believe Leon would just randomly fall down the stairs for no reason.
Eliza looked away guiltily and ducked behind Victor, her voice shaking as she whispered, "It's my fault, Vic. Don't be mad at Serena. Leon's dealing with the aftermath now, and as his mother, she must be feeling terrible about it."
Victor heard this and became even more convinced that Serena was just being unreasonable. He looked up and saw nothing but cold fury in Serena's beautiful, gentle eyes.
"Eliza, do you dare swear on the child in your belly that this has nothing to do with you?" Serena asked.
Eliza's body trembled. Serena let out a cold laugh. "If Leon's leg got broken because of you, then I hope your child is born disabled."
Such vicious words coming from Serena's mouth shocked Victor. For a moment, he felt like he didn't even know her anymore. "Enough!" he shouted.
Serena had nothing left to say to Victor. She simply turned around and went to find the doctor.
She texted Keith to explain the situation and took two days off work. Then, she quietly stayed by Leon's bedside in the hospital room for two straight days until he finally woke up on the third afternoon.
The moment Leon opened his eyes, he saw Serena's familiar profile. His eyes immediately filled with tears. "Mom!"
When Serena heard his voice, she looked over with mixed emotions. She didn't rush forward, but there was a hint of relief in her eyes.
She couldn't love and protect Leon the way she used to, but he was still a child she'd treasured for so long, her own flesh and blood. Serena couldn't bring herself to be completely heartless.
But seeing that Serena wasn't coming closer, Leon called out to her urgently. Something seemed off about him. "Mommy, why won't you talk to me? Don't you love me anymore?"
Serena was confused and asked him a few careful questions. That was when she realized Leon's memory seemed to have stopped right before Eliza showed up—like none of it had ever happened.
The doctor came over to give Leon a full examination and was surprised by the memory loss. "The patient did hit his head pretty hard, but we didn't see any signs of internal bleeding or nerve pressure before."
The doctor was puzzled too, but gave a cautious guess that the amnesia was probably temporary and might clear up in a few days.
Victor and Eliza rushed to the hospital as soon as they heard the news. When they learned about Leon's memory loss, Eliza was clearly relieved. Serena sat quietly nearby, watching Leon carefully.
The moment Eliza appeared, a flash of hatred and disgust crossed the little boy's face.
'I knew it,' Serena thought with a sigh. She knew Leon too well, so from the very beginning, she'd suspected he was just faking his memory loss. Now that she'd caught that look on his face, she was completely sure.
"Since Leon's awake, I should go," Serena said, getting up from her chair.
Leon immediately panicked and reached out with his little hands, grabbing onto her clothes. He looked up at her with pitiful eyes, like he couldn't bear to be abandoned.
Serena paused for a moment, then finally pulled her clothes free from his grip. Her voice returned to its usual calm tone. "Leon, faking memory loss won't work. There's no such thing as a do-over in this world."
The other three people in the room all tensed up when they heard this.
Leon burst into tears with a loud "waaah" and threw his arms around her waist, not caring about anything else. "Mom, I know I was wrong! Please take me with you. I'll never do it again, please forgive me."
Serena still felt sorry for him, but she'd already spent all her love on Victor and Leon. Even if Leon apologized, she would never turn back and accept a kid who'd betrayed her.
"Let go," Serena said tiredly. "And you still haven't told the truth about falling down the stairs. Leon, you're old enough to think for yourself now. You should know that some things can't be covered up."
Having said her piece, Serena walked away without looking back. Leon finally turned all his hatred toward Eliza.
He pointed his little finger at Eliza and shouted the truth to Victor, "She's the one who pushed me down the stairs. This evil woman heard you were getting married and took it out on me. It was all her!"
Victor's expression darkened as he turned to look at Eliza. Seeing things going badly, she quickly waved her hands in denial. "Vic, how is that even possible? You know me. I would never do something like that. I didn't—"
After all these years together, Victor could tell immediately that Eliza was lying. A chill ran down his spine, making him feel cold to the bone.
So Serena's suspicions had been right all along, and Leon hadn't been lying either. Eliza had been playing the victim while she was the one who'd destroyed Leon's life with her own hands.
"You're disgusting," Victor said coldly as he stood up. He slapped Eliza across the face and grabbed her arm, dragging her out of the hospital room. "Get out, and don't you ever come near Leon again!"
Victor felt like he'd never really known Eliza at all. She could actually hurt a little kid like that. 'What else has she done before this?' he thought.
