Downstairs at the hospital, Serena sat on a bench for a long time, her emotions all over the place.
What she'd said to Leon was harsh, and she couldn't help thinking that if Eliza had never come along, maybe she and Leon could have supported each other and lived a good life together—even if she never got Victor's love.
But there was no point crying over spilled milk.
Serena heard footsteps nearby and turned to see Keith walking over with Alyssa. Keith spoke first, "Sorry about this. Alyssa heard what happened and insisted on coming to see you. I couldn't talk her out of it."
The truth was, Alyssa had cried several times, worried that Serena might change her mind and go back to Leon, leaving her all alone. That was why she'd been so determined to come.
But Keith could see that Serena looked pretty upset right now, so he kept that part to himself.
Serena reached out and gently touched Alyssa's tired little face. "What's wrong, sweetheart? I've been busy the last few days and couldn't spend time with you. Can you be a good girl and listen to Daddy for me?"
But her words made Alyssa's face crumple up even worse than if she'd been crying. Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
"Mommy, don't leave me." She opened her mouth to speak, and both Serena and Keith were instantly shocked. They'd just witnessed Alyssa talk for the first time.
Before they could even react, another crying voice came from the other side. "Mommy..."
Serena turned around and saw Victor holding Leon. Her emotions were complicated, and she felt completely overwhelmed.
"You should go," Keith said, understanding how torn Serena was feeling right now. "I'll explain to Alyssa that you're not abandoning her."
His words helped clear up the mess of thoughts in her head. Serena took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay, I'll be right back."
Serena thought she'd already made things crystal clear with Leon earlier. She didn't want to waste any more time on this situation, so she walked over to Victor and said bluntly, "I have a new life now. You shouldn't have brought him here and given him false hope."
Leon was already a complete mess, tears streaming down his face. He choked out between sobs, "Mommy, what do I have to do for you to forgive me? I'll be good, I promise. I won't believe any more bad people ever again."
With every word he spoke, tears rolled down his little face.
Serena wanted to say she'd never look back, but seeing Leon sick like this, she could only sigh. She reached out and wiped away the tears from the corner of his eyes. "Wait until you fix those bad habits of yours, then come find me, okay?
"At least try to be someone you can be proud of."
The words were too deep for Leon to really understand, but he nodded desperately anyway.
"Alright then, I'll wait for you to change." Serena looked down and turned to leave for good.
Victor patted Leon's back and carried him back to the hospital room. This was probably the best outcome they could hope for.
Serena returned to Alyssa's side and saw her crying. Her heart clenched as she gently comforted her. "I came back, didn't I? Don't be sad, Alyssa. I won't leave you."
'I didn't think about how sensitive kids are. Of course Alyssa would think I was abandoning her when she saw me being nice to another child,' Serena thought.
After patiently comforting her for a while, Alyssa finally managed a small smile and fell asleep tiredly against Keith's shoulder.
"I'm sorry," Keith said quietly. Serena was already dealing with enough stress, and having to comfort Alyssa on top of everything else was really his fault.
"It's nothing," Serena said softly, pressing her lips together in a forced smile to avoid waking Alyssa.
Keith called his driver to take Serena home. After two straight days of worry and stress, she really needed some rest. The moment she got home, she collapsed into bed and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, Powell Manor was in complete chaos. Albert had found out about Leon's condition and was furious.
Victor stood quietly beside him after getting slapped, while Albert let out a harsh laugh. "I told you from the beginning that Eliza was bad news. Only a monster would hurt a child like that, but you believed in her the whole time."
If this had happened before, Victor would have defended Eliza without question. But now, he wasn't so sure anymore.
The Eliza he used to know seemed to have died in the past, and he couldn't recognize the person standing in front of him.
"You have two days to deal with Eliza. Send her as far away as possible and make sure she never has anything to do with the Powell family again," Albert said, taking a deep breath.
"This is your last chance, Victor. Don't disappoint me again. You've already made too many mistakes."
Victor nodded silently, then turned and left to find Eliza.
Eliza had been on edge ever since that day, not knowing what Victor would decide. The moment she saw him, she grabbed his arm desperately, not caring about anything else.
Tears kept streaming down her face as Eliza choked out. "Vic, I know I was wrong. Please, for the sake of our two kids, just forgive me this once. I only pushed Leon because I was so angry and upset."
Victor didn't believe a word of it anymore. He was tired of trying to figure out what was true and what was fake in everything Eliza said. He pushed her hands away.
"Forget it. We're done," Victor said coldly. "I'll take responsibility for our kids and bring him back to the Powell family to raise him properly. But I don't want to see you again."
Eliza was stunned. "You don't want me anymore?"
Victor laughed bitterly, "After everything that's happened, what makes you think I'd put up with your vicious temper? Taking the kid back to the Powell family is already more than generous."
Hearing him talk like he was doing her some huge favor, Eliza finally dropped the act completely. "More than generous? I think it's because Leon's become a useless cripple and the Powell family has no one left to inherit the business. That's why you suddenly want my son, isn't it?"
Her voice turned sharp and mocking as she jabbed her finger at Victor's chest. "You're just a man who can't commit to anything. You did this to Serena before, and now you're doing it to me.
"You totally deserve to end up with nothing! Now you're just a tool for some arranged marriage. You'll always be a worthless loser."
Victor's expression grew colder as he listened to her rant. "Stop acting crazy. I'll give you money before you leave. Consider it compensation. You can name your price, as long as it's not completely ridiculous."
'Name my price?' Eliza thought bitterly. 'What amount of money could possibly compare to being the wife of the Powell Group's CEO?'
