Since Kristy was getting married soon, Serena didn't want to drag her along. She made plans to meet her another time and went to the police station by herself.
Victor was completely wasted, just like she'd expected. His face was all bruised up, and he kept mumbling Serena's name over and over.
"You just need to give a quick statement and help pay the fine," the officer said when he saw Serena. He looked relieved, like she was his savior. It was already late, and they couldn't exactly keep Victor there overnight.
Serena looked down and cooperated with the police to get everything sorted out before finally taking Victor with her.
"Sorry you had to come out this late. You really need to talk to him when you get home. He can't just drink and get into fights every time something happens, or he's going to end up in jail," the officer warned.
Victor was leaning all over Serena, reeking of alcohol and mumbling apologies. He kept repeating "Serena, I love you" like a broken record.
Serena wasn't moved by any of it. She actually found it pathetic. She'd already called Albert before coming, and the driver was waiting outside. All she had to do was get Victor out of there, and this whole mess would finally be over.
From now on, they'd go their separate ways. Serena would have a fresh start, and it wouldn't matter if Victor kept spiraling down this destructive path.
"Serena, I really see how good you are to me now..." Victor mumbled. "Can you love me again? Just one more time?"
Victor half-opened his eyes and grabbed Serena's wrist with one hand, crying as he begged. His eyes were full of broken love and regret.
He wasn't actually that drunk. He was just counting on Serena's soft heart. If this had been before, she definitely would have been moved and maybe even gone back to him.
But now, Serena ignored him completely and just kept dragging Victor toward the exit. After turning the corner, she finally saw the Powell family's car.
The passenger door flew open, and Eliza rushed over, shoving Serena aside and grabbing Victor away from her. Her face was full of suspicion and anger.
Serena wasn't ready for it and stumbled backward. She really hadn't expected Eliza to show up, especially with her belly so big that moving around was difficult.
But Eliza didn't hesitate. She raised her hand and slapped Serena hard. The sharp sound echoed through the night air. "Coming out in the middle of the night to seduce men? Serena, do you have any shame at all?"
Eliza was completely hysterical. After getting slapped, Serena quickly recovered and didn't hesitate to slap her back twice. "Watch your mouth. Let me teach you how to talk like a decent person."
Serena was already annoyed from being dragged out here so late at night, and now Eliza had the nerve to blame her for everything. 'Does she really think I'm some pushover with no backbone?' she thought.
Eliza was stunned by the slap, but before she could recover, Victor seemed to suddenly sober up. He shoved her away hard. "Get away from me!" he yelled.
He didn't hold back his strength at all. Serena realized what was happening, but it was too late. The next second, Eliza fell straight down and hit the ground, crying out in pain.
Eliza clutched her stomach as a large pool of red blood spread across the ground beneath her. Serena's face went pale, and she quickly pulled out her phone to call 911.
The Powell family driver saw what happened and rushed out of the car. "Ms. Stone, are you okay?"
"My baby," Eliza gasped between sobs, barely able to breathe from the pain. After that push, Victor was completely sober now. He stared down at his hands in shock.
"Victor, what are you standing there for? Pick her up and get her to the car. We need to get to the hospital!" Serena shouted.
Her voice snapped Victor out of it. He frantically picked up Eliza, but when he saw all the blood on the ground, his hands started shaking. 'Did I just kill my own child?' he thought.
His hands were covered in blood. Victor looked completely lost, his eyes filled with the regret and fear that came with being sober again.
Even though Serena hated Eliza, pregnancy was a life-or-death matter for any woman. Seeing how bad the situation was, she felt anxious the whole way to the hospital.
"Eliza, just hang in there. We're almost at the hospital," Serena called out.
All she got back were Eliza's agonized screams. Serena felt a pang of sympathy, but looking at how much blood she was losing, this pregnancy was probably over.
They got her to the hospital, and an hour later, the doctor came out of the operating room shaking his head at both of them. "I'm sorry. The patient is out of danger now, but she lost too much blood. We couldn't save the baby."
At least Eliza was okay. That was the best outcome they could hope for. Serena let out a relieved breath and glanced over at Victor. He'd been in a daze ever since they got to the hospital, like he still hadn't processed what had just happened.
Serena had always known he was weak, so she wasn't about to waste time feeling disappointed for Eliza. She just said "Good luck with everything" and left the hospital, exhausted.
Victor finally snapped out of it and walked into the hospital room. Eliza was awake, lying there pale as a ghost. The moment she saw him, she didn't say a word—just broke down sobbing.
"I'm sorry, I never thought..." Victor said, but there was no point in apologizing now. He sat down beside the bed and took her hand. Looking at her broken state, he finally accepted his fate and let out a bitter laugh.
"We can have another baby, Ellie. Let's get married," Victor sighed.
Hearing Victor's promise, Eliza finally stopped crying and broke into a smile. The moment he hugged her, her lips curved upward and something strange flashed in her eyes.
'Finally got Victor wrapped around my finger. Losing this baby wasn't such a bad thing after all. Besides, keeping it would've been a problem anyway,' Eliza thought casually. After all, the child in her belly wasn't even Victor's.
Meanwhile, Serena walked out of the hospital without rushing to catch a cab home. She felt a bit dazed. Seeing Eliza in such a miserable state didn't make her feel good at all—it just seemed tragic.
They'd sacrificed a life that was about to come into this world. 'Will Victor feel guilty when he wakes up in the middle of the night?' Serena wondered.
A cold wind blew past, and Serena suddenly noticed a shadow following her at a distance. Her heart jumped and she became alert, instinctively picking up her pace. The person behind her seemed to realize she'd noticed and started walking faster too.
Everything around her was dead quiet. It was already past midnight, and there wasn't a single person on the street. Serena's back was trembling as she tried to stay calm.
When the person behind her realized he'd been spotted, he spoke up in a dark voice, "You killed my child, and now you think you can just walk away?"
'What? What child?' Serena thought, confused. Before she could fully process what he meant, everything went black and she was knocked unconscious.
