When Serena opened her eyes again, she was surrounded by complete darkness. The throbbing pain in the back of her head suddenly reminded her of what had happened. She'd been abducted on her way back from the hospital. There were no lights anywhere, so she couldn't tell where she was.
"You're awake?" A figure suddenly moved closer, revealing a pair of bloodshot eyes.
Serena was startled for a moment. Once she got a better look at the person in front of her, she vaguely recognized who it was.
Luther Foster? Isn't he Eliza's ex-husband?' Serena thought. Her mind was spinning as she tried to make sense of everything and force herself to stay calm. "Mr. Foster, we don't have any conflict between us. Why did you abduct me?" she asked.
Luther let out a weird, cold laugh and reached over to pat her cheek, his expression filled with hatred. "You killed my child, and now you want to play dumb?"
Fear and confusion flooded through Serena. She couldn't understand what he meant at first, not until she saw his bloodshot eyes up close. Then, it suddenly clicked. 'Is he saying that the baby Eliza lost was his?' she thought.
"Mr. Frost, I didn't hurt your child. Victor was the one who made Eliza lose that baby," Serena said.
After putting the pieces together, Serena suddenly realized that both she and Victor had been completely played by Eliza. But now wasn't the time to think about all that. She needed to figure out how to get away from Luther.
Luther laughed coldly at her words. Serena could smell alcohol on his breath and realized he must be drunk, which explained why he'd do something this crazy.
"If it wasn't for you, Victor would've married Eliza like he was supposed to, and my kid wouldn't be dead," Luther growled. "Stop struggling. I'm not listening to a word of your bullshit."
Luther grabbed Serena's chin and forced her to look at him. His bloodshot eyes were filled with sick desire. "But you're not bad looking. If you give me a kid, I'll let this whole thing slide. How about it?"
He'd had his eye on Serena for a while now. Eliza couldn't compare to her, after all. Serena was beautiful and delicate, like some delicate flower that made one want to dirty it just by looking at her.
"A life for a life. This is me being generous," Luther said with a twisted laugh as he lunged forward.
Serena's face went pale with terror as she fought against him desperately.
Luther was so drunk that when she struggled, she realized the ropes around her wrists weren't tied very tight. She managed to work them loose in just a few seconds.
Without thinking, Serena drove her knee straight into Luther's body, then kicked him away as hard as she could. Her foot connected right between his legs.
"Ah—" Luther never expected that someone as gentle-looking as Serena would hit so hard, especially going straight for his most vulnerable spot. He screamed and collapsed on the ground, unable to get up.
Even though Serena had acted decisively, her hands were shaking as she quickly grabbed her phone from Luther's pocket and ran out of the yard in a panic.
It was already deep into the night. The area around Serena was completely unfamiliar, and she had no idea where she was. At least she had her phone and a strong signal. After running out of the yard, she found some bushes and hid inside them.
"Damn it, don't let me catch you!" Luther's voice came from nearby. He'd obviously recovered somewhat, but there wasn't a single light out here in the darkness. Even he couldn't spot where Serena was hiding right away.
Serena covered her mouth tightly as tears streamed down her face. She didn't have time to make a call, so she rapidly pressed the power button to send an SOS signal. 'How far is the nearest police station? Will they get here before Luther finds me?' she thought.
In the pitch-black darkness, her fear and anxiety felt magnified a thousand times. Serena didn't even dare breathe loudly. When she heard Luther's footsteps getting closer, her heart nearly jumped into her throat.
Luckily, Luther only searched the area nearby and didn't find the bushes where she was hiding. He cursed under his breath and left.
'Am I safe now?' Serena thought. Even though she couldn't hear anything around her anymore, she stayed hidden just to be careful. It wasn't until she heard police sirens in the distance that she finally felt relieved.
"I'm here!" Serena called out, using what was left of her voice. The officers immediately spotted where Serena was, and she completely passed out.
When Serena opened her eyes again, doctors and police officers were standing around her bed. It was almost dawn outside.
"Ms. Gray, you're finally awake. Are you feeling okay anywhere?" a police officer asked as he walked over.
Serena could smell the sharp disinfectant smell of the hospital, but it made her feel incredibly safe.
A female officer came up to Serena and helped her sit up in the hospital bed. "We caught the guy who abducted you, Ms. Gray. You don't need to worry anymore."
Serena had only passed out temporarily because she'd been through too much stress all night, plus the shock of everything. She'd been wound up tight like a spring, so when she finally relaxed, she just collapsed.
Now that Serena was awake, she felt completely refreshed and clear-headed. Everything was finally over.
"We'll need you to come back to the station with us, Ms. Gray, just for a simple statement," the officer said.
Serena nodded her agreement. More importantly, she wanted to see Luther again and find out if what he'd said was true or not.
'If the baby Eliza was carrying really wasn't Victor's...' Serena thought as her eyes turned cold. Victor had nothing to do with her anymore, but she still had the right to know the truth.
They got to the police station quickly, where Luther was handcuffed to a chair. He looked completely clueless about what he'd done wrong, and when he saw Serena, he shot her a vicious glare.
"Don't worry, Ms. Gray," the female officer said, glaring back at Luther. "This is a police station. Watch your attitude and stop trying to intimidate the victim!"
Serena smiled at the officer to show she was fine, then sat down across from Luther.
"Mr. Foster, I hope you understand that honesty will get you a lighter sentence," Serena said calmly, though her voice carried an unmistakable weight. "You abducted me, which means prison time. If I decide to press full charges, this won't just go away."
Luther's eyes went wide with shock. "I didn't actually do anything to you. Why should I go to jail for this?"
"Attempted assault is still a crime that carries a sentence," Serena said calmly. The police officer nearby didn't contradict her.
