Even though Serena wasn't seriously hurt, if she really wanted to press charges, Luther would definitely be in trouble. He was just now realizing how serious this situation was, and his face went pale.
'I definitely don't want to go to prison,' Luther thought. If he hadn't been drunk last night, he never would have been so reckless and attacked Serena. A look of regret crossed his face.
"I might be willing to drop the charges against you," Serena said gently, noticing the change in Luther's expression. She could tell exactly what he was thinking.
Hearing that there might be room for negotiation, Luther rubbed his hands together nervously and put on a pleading expression. "Ms. Gray, we go way back, don't we? And you can't really blame me for what happened. It's not entirely my fault that I went after you."
Serena raised an eyebrow and quietly turned on her phone's voice recorder. "I want to know about that too. Last night you told me I killed your child. What exactly happened?"
Luther's face looked uncomfortable, but with all these cops around, he just wanted to stay out of jail. He took a deep breath and started blaming someone else.
"It's all Eliza's fault." Luther shrugged. "The whole thing was her idea. She wanted to use our kid to marry into money. You know, climb the social ladder by having a baby with a rich guy.
"I was just drunk and got a little carried away last night, but this was all Eliza's plan. It had nothing to do with me."
The suspicions that had been eating at Serena last night were finally confirmed. She couldn't help but let out a cold laugh. "So Victor was played from the very beginning."
Luther snorted like he was still annoyed about it. "That idiot Victor was basically raising my kid for me. If the Powell family wasn't loaded, you think I'd let Eliza take my son to shack up with some other guy?"
After recording that confession, Serena quietly turned off her phone's recorder. Everything was exactly as she'd suspected.
"Alright." Serena slowly stood up and looked apologetically at the officers nearby. "Sorry for taking up your time. As for Luther's punishment, just follow standard procedure."
A few days in jail would serve as a good lesson for him. Serena might have a good nature, but that didn't mean people could walk all over her.
Luther should feel lucky that she didn't actually get hurt and managed to escape in time. Otherwise, Serena definitely wouldn't have gone easy on him.
"Alright, Ms. Gray, you just need to give a quick statement and then you can go," the officer said.
That was when Luther realized he'd been played. He started yelling Serena's name from behind, but the cops got annoyed and dragged him back. "This is a police station. Keep it down!"
If Serena really wanted to go after Luther for what he'd done, she wouldn't have just asked them to follow standard procedure. She could have taken him to court and gotten a hefty settlement out of it.
When Serena left the police station, she immediately sent the recording from earlier to Albert. She had no idea how Victor would react when he found out about all this, but Albert would definitely make a fair judgment. She didn't want to waste her time dealing with Victor directly.
Albert texted back quickly: [Is this for real?]
Even though it was just one line, Serena could tell he was pissed off. She told him everything that had happened the night before.
Serena: [You don't have to believe me. Go investigate the truth yourself.]
She'd said everything she needed to say. From now on, whatever happened with the Powell family and Victor had nothing to do with her.
Meanwhile, at Powell Manor, Albert was listening to the same recording over and over again. His face kept changing from dark red to pale as his anger built up. "Get that worthless son of mine back here right now!" he shouted.
'So this is what I threw Serena away for. I even destroyed the engagement with the Aniston family for this piece of trash. I must have been completely blind!' Albert thought.
The butler could tell Albert was truly furious this time. Victor had been causing one disaster after another lately, and if this kept up...
"I'll go get Mr. Victor Powell right away, Mr. Powell," the butler said respectfully.
Victor rushed over from the hospital, looking slightly annoyed. "Dad, Ellie's in a delicate condition right now and needs care. Couldn't you just tell me whatever this is over the phone?"
Albert let out a cold laugh. Hearing how affectionately Victor talked about her, he pressed play on the recording.
"That idiot Victor is even helping me raise my kid!" Luther's smug voice echoed through the room.
Victor's expression froze completely.
"Listen to this. You gave that woman your heart, but she never respected you. She just saw you as a sucker," Albert said, his voice dripping with mockery. After all his years dominating the business world, he couldn't understand how he had ended up with such a stupid son.
"This can't be real. This has to be fake," Victor said. He'd spent the entire day trying to convince himself that since things had turned out this way, he needed to step up and take responsibility for Eliza.
But in an instant, all of that crumbled like a house of cards. Even the child he'd felt so guilty about the night before didn't share his blood.
"You need to think long and hard about this. As for Eliza," Albert's eyes turned ice cold, "she's the first person in all these years who's dared to play me like this. I'm not going to let her off easy."
Victor collapsed to the floor like all the strength had been drained from his body. He didn't want to think about anything else. He just kept looking back at the past year. 'What have I been doing with my life?' he thought.
He'd thrown away an amazing wife and the happy, stable home they'd built together, all for a con artist like Eliza. But Victor's regret came too late. The Aniston family alliance was gone, and Serena, who'd once loved him with all her heart, would never be his again.
"You're staying home for the foreseeable future. If I find out you've gone to see Eliza again, I'll act like I never had a son," Albert warned, slamming his hand on the table.
Then, he called his butler over to make arrangements. He wanted his people to track down Eliza and teach her a lesson, and he told the PR department to get ready to release the evidence.
'This works out fine,' Albert thought. As long as he could spin Victor as some poor guy who got fooled by love, maybe he could save what was left of Powell Group's reputation. That was just how the world worked.
Victor obviously wouldn't go back to Eliza now. She'd turned herself into a complete joke.
The butler "escorted" him to his room, where the old family portrait Albert had forced them to take was still hanging on the wall.
Serena stood beside him in the photo, her smile gentle and warm. No matter when Victor looked at it, she always seemed soft but strong. He instantly broke down and grabbed his head in his hands.
