Serena planned to cook dinner herself when they got home, but Keith approached from behind.
"You've had such a long day dealing with all those documents. Let me handle dinner tonight." Keith gently pushed Serena out of the kitchen without giving her a chance to protest. "Go on, take a break and spend some time with Alyssa. She's been missing you."
Alyssa stood outside the kitchen, clutching her doll and watching Serena with longing. Alyssa wanted to be close to Serena, but seemed unsure whether she should approach, her expression cautious and hesitant.
"Alright." Those soft, pleading eyes melted Serena's heart completely, especially since Keith had already volunteered to cook. She nodded with a slightly embarrassed smile.
"Thanks for taking care of dinner. I'll go play with Alyssa then," Serena said.
With permission granted, Alyssa's face lit up with joy as she quickly grabbed Serena's hand and pulled her away from the kitchen.
After playing with Alyssa, Keith emerged from the kitchen to call them both for dinner.
When Serena entered the kitchen, rich, savory aromas hit her—chicken pot pie. She thought, 'Such a feast tonight?'
"I happened to see we had some chicken left, and since I accidentally interrupted your date today, I figured I'd cook something special as an apology," Keith said, pulling out her chair.
Serena's eyes crinkled with amusement as she sat down. "How did you know I had a date today?"
Keith's movements froze for a beat, realizing his slip. He cleared his throat, adopting a casual expression. "I overheard it mentioned earlier."
Serena didn't think much of it and settled into her seat.
The truth was, she hadn't wanted to go to dinner with Julian at all. If he hadn't been so persistent, if she could have figured out any other way to handle the situation, she wouldn't have gone tonight.
"I should thank you, actually. I really didn't want to have dinner with that guy—I just didn't know how to say no." Serena seemed to realize that talking about someone behind their back wasn't right, so she quickly changed the subject.
She said, "Anyway, I'll gladly accept Mr. Brannon's kindness. These pies look absolutely delicious—let's dig in."
Alyssa clapped her hands with delight. Instead of sitting down immediately, Keith headed to the refrigerator and pulled out two bottles of beer. "The food turned out pretty good today. How about we have a little drink?"
Serena wasn't much of a drinker, but after everything that had happened recently, she could use some alcohol to numb the stress.
Regarding Julian, Serena didn't know how to describe her feelings. He was genuinely a good person, but she'd never imagined starting a relationship with a stranger in such a way. It just felt burdensome.
"Open one for me." Serena's lips curved into a small smile.
Twenty minutes later, Serena had finished an entire bottle of beer and was already feeling dizzy.
She'd never been good with alcohol, but she hadn't expected one bottle to make her this lightheaded. She reached out blindly, and her fingers found a glass of clear liquid. She wondered, 'Water?'
Serena downed the entire glass in one go. The sharp, burning sensation hit her throat, and it took her a moment to realize what had happened.
It wasn't water—it was vodka!
Keith only realized what had happened after watching her drain the glass, his face changing instantly.
"That was vodka I was using for the dish—it's really strong. Why did you just drink it like that?" Keith could tell Serena couldn't handle her alcohol; that single beer earlier had already gotten to her, let alone a full glass of vodka.
Serena's cheeks flushed pink under the warm light, making her look even more enchanting as she stood up and stumbled toward Keith in a daze.
Without hesitation, she settled onto his lap, and she wrapped her arms around his neck without any other support.
"Seri?" Keith said.
Alyssa covered her eyes but kept peeking through her fingers at the scene across from her.
Keith noticed her gesture and felt a mix of helplessness and guilt, realizing he'd messed up. He decided to send Alyssa away first.
He said, "Serena's had too much to drink, so I need to take care of her. Why don't you go watch some cartoons in your room for a bit, okay?"
Despite her young age, Alyssa was sharp as a tack. She'd been dying for Serena to become her mom, and this was the perfect chance to push their relationship forward! She nodded eagerly and returned to her room, closing the door behind her.
"You bastard—" Serena mumbled groggily, finding something familiar about the arms holding her. For a moment, she mistook him for Victor.
She immediately pushed herself out of his embrace and pointed an accusatory finger at his nose. "Why are you in my house? This is my home, Victor—stay away from me!"
Keith was initially confused by her calling him a bastard. Still, after a moment, he realized she wasn't talking about him—she meant Victor. He wondered, 'How could she still remember Victor in this state?'
Keith wasn't sure what he was thinking, but he steadied her and said quietly, "I'm not Victor. I'm Keith."
"Victor is a complete asshole! He lied to me, he hurt me, he wasted my time!" Serena cursed.
Even though Serena was directing her accusations at the wrong person, Keith found himself oddly charmed by this version of her.
She was nothing like her usual gentle, composed self—the one who seemed to wear the same pleasant expression for everyone and never appeared truly angry. This was the real her.
Without his support, Serena couldn't stand on her own. Keith had to wrap his arm around her waist and guide her to her room.
With Serena this drunk tonight, Keith couldn't risk sending her back to her original room—who knew what kind of drama would unfold between her and Alyssa.
After settling Serena on the bed, Keith stared at her with exasperation and concern.
"Victor, we'll never have anything between us again." Serena's eyes fluttered half-open, then suddenly focused on Keith's handsome face. Confusion clouded her features.
"Who are you, handsome? What are you doing in my house?"
'Finally stopped thinking I'm Victor?' Keith raised an eyebrow and crouched down to meet her gaze. "I live here, so it's not exactly weird that I'm around."
Drunk Serena studied Keith with bleary eyes before asking, "Why do you live in my house? Are you my husband or something?"
The question hit Keith like a punch to the gut. He froze for several seconds, mouth half-open to respond, when Serena collapsed back onto the pillow.
Keith drew in a deep breath, then slowly exhaled. He slipped off her shoes, pulled the covers up her chin, and quietly left the room.
