Serena still looked dazed, reluctant to leave Keith's side when she only wanted to know how he was doing.
But staying here wouldn't help anyone, and with James insisting, she finally nodded and followed another doctor for her examination.
After a complete checkup, they discovered Serena had several injuries of her own—wounds she'd missed entirely while worrying about Keith.
"This leg is in bad shape. You're lucky it didn't break, and here you are walking around on it," the doctor scolded. "If the bone shifts, you could have permanent problems. I'm prescribing medication, and then you're going to a room where you'll stay put."
Serena shook her head firmly. "My friend is still in surgery. My injuries aren't that serious—I can tell."
The hospital had already received word about the accident involving two people in a car crash. Since Serena was standing relatively fine here, her friend must have been in critical condition.
Seeing that even if he forced her into a room, she wouldn't rest properly, the doctor waved his hand in resignation. "Fine, go wait then. Just don't move around too much. When there's news, I'll have you taken to a room. Deal?"
Despite Serena's gentle, mild-mannered appearance, the doctor hadn't expected such stubborn determination from her.
Serena eventually found herself back at the operating room doors.
James looked surprised to see her return. He quickly realized she must be too worried to stay away, no matter what anyone said. She had to be here, waiting for news.
"I'm sorry." Serena's voice caught in her throat. "If he hadn't been protecting me, Keith never would have gotten hurt this badly."
James' expression grew complicated, but thinking of Keith's devotion to Serena and how special she was to him, this kind of sacrifice didn't seem surprising. He spoke softly, trying to comfort her. "Mr. Brannon's a good man—he'll pull through this."
That was all Serena could pray for now.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted nearby. Serena and James turned to see several police officers approaching. When they spotted Serena, they walked straight over.
"Ms. Gray? We've apprehended the driver. This appears to involve commercial crime. Could you come to the station for identification?"
"Commercial crime?" Serena's mind raced. "So it wasn't some random accident. He did this on purpose." The pieces clicked into place, but she shook her head firmly.
She said, "My friend hasn't woken up yet. I'm not leaving."
The officers exchanged uncomfortable glances. The victim wasn't in any state to be pushed right now, and they couldn't force her to help with their case.
They had no choice but to back down with a reluctant nod.
"Ms. Gray, you'll need to come to Hayland First Precinct within three days to handle the follow-up procedures. We want to make sure you get a proper explanation for all this."
The officers turned and left, but Serena's eyes never moved from the light above the operating room doors. Anxiety churned in her chest.
Soon enough, the surgical lights went dark. Serena and James immediately rushed forward as the doctor emerged, pulling off his mask. "The patient is out of danger now. The family can rest easy."
Relief flooded through Serena at those words, and her legs nearly gave out beneath her. James caught her before she could fall.
The doctor added, "The patient will need to stay in the ICU for observation. After twenty-four hours, we can move him to a regular room."
James noticed Serena's pale complexion and shaky hands. "Ms. Gray, let me take you to get some rest. There's no point staying here when you can't even see Mr. Brannon. If something happens to you, all his effort to protect you would be for nothing."
Serena nodded weakly, knowing he was right.
After resting in the hospital room for a day, Keith was transferred out of the ICU but still hadn't regained consciousness. His body was covered in multiple fractures, and he'd suffered a concussion.
Fortunately, his internal organs were unharmed, so his life wasn't in danger. But with the head injury, no one could say when he might wake up.
Every day, Serena would finish her treatments and head straight to Keith's room to care for him.
James tried to discourage her several times, but eventually gave up when he kept finding her there anyway.
Soon, Sophia brought Alyssa to the hospital as well.
After all, with Keith's serious condition, Alyssa was legally his only family member and had the right to know what was happening.
Alyssa's eyes welled up with tears when she was led into the room. She approached the bedside cautiously and reached for Keith's hand with trembling fingers.
"Don't worry, Alyssa. Daddy's going to be fine," Serena said softly, stroking the little girl's hair. "He's just really tired, so he's taking a long nap. He might even wake up today."
Alyssa could only sniffle and look up at Serena with teary eyes before throwing herself into her arms.
Keith remained unconscious for two more days, finally waking up on the third morning.
Serena had just prepared some warm water to clean him up when she walked into the room and found herself looking directly into his open eyes.
"You're finally awake." Her voice caught in her throat, and Keith, still groggy from his long sleep, could tell from her expression that he'd been out for quite some time.
"Sorry for worrying you." Keith's voice came out rough and hoarse.
Serena couldn't help but laugh, her expression caught between relief and exasperation. "You're the one who got hurt protecting me. Why are you apologizing?"
"I just didn't want you to be upset." Keith's voice was still gravelly as he spoke.
Serena looked away awkwardly, setting down the hot water she'd been holding before getting him a fresh glass.
After a while, they talked through what had happened after the crash. Serena had already been to the police station for a basic identification. Still, she didn't know much more than that—they'd have to wait for Keith to wake up before making real decisions.
"From what you're telling me, we've made enemies of Brannon Creative Group's biggest rivals, Hansen Group. Their boss, Chandler Hansen, has always been ruthless, but I never thought he'd try to kill someone in broad daylight." Serena frowned.
"It's okay. You don't need to be scared—I'll handle what comes next." Keith took Serena's hand, his gaze intense.
He continued, "And don't blame yourself for this. I did want to protect you, but they were coming after me in the first place. If you hadn't been with me, you never would've gotten caught up in this mess."
Serena shook her head. She wouldn't blame Keith and didn't feel like she'd been dragged into something unfairly.
Even if she had been, Keith taking that hit for her made them even.
