Victor let out a bitter laugh, understanding precisely what Serena meant. She was ready to move forward and hoped he wouldn't harbor feelings he shouldn't have anymore.
"Congratulations." Each word felt like pulling teeth. Victor watched as Serena and Keith turned to leave, even their silhouettes perfectly matched.
Leon's voice dripping with schadenfreude. "How can you still think about Mom? After everything we did, we shouldn't be forgiven even in the next life." He paused. "But I still have a chance. You don't."
Leon's mockery cut the deepest. Victor's face darkened as he picked Leon up, though he had to admit the boy was right. Serena might appear soft on the surface, like water.
But spilled water couldn't be gathered up again.
Soon, they both calmed down. Victor carried Leon as they turned to leave. No matter how much resentment he felt, he had to pull himself together and deal with what came next.
The next day, Serena barely stepped into the office when Graham called her in.
He said, "We might have a new hire coming in later. She's got some serious connections, and I'm not feeling my best right now, so I was hoping you could show her the ropes."
Graham's tone carried a hint of reluctance. Serena caught the underlying message immediately. She thought, 'Great, another backdoor hire who thinks the rules don't apply to her.'
She said, "If she genuinely wants to learn, I'm happy to help. But if she's got attitude problems and isn't serious about the work, there's not much I can do."
Serena didn't commit right away. She'd dealt with difficult personalities before, and with Nicole already being a handful, the last thing she needed was another problem child.
"Let's see how it goes after you meet her," Graham sighed. "I still owe you for covering that business trip, and now I'm asking for another favor."
A mischievous glint flickered in Serena's eyes. "Then you can buy me dinner sometime."
Graham felt a wave of relief wash over him. He knew Serena was always easy-going, but he couldn't keep taking advantage of her kindness forever. She'd already helped him so much.
His phone suddenly buzzed on the desk. Graham glanced at the caller ID and knew the new employee had arrived at the entrance.
"Let's go," Graham said.
Graham and Serena walked toward the design department. Sure enough, the elevator doors opened right on cue, and a girl dressed head-to-toe in designer brands stepped out. The moment she saw the office interior, her brow furrowed with obvious distaste.
She said, "I have to work in a place like this? Don't I even get my own office?"
James felt his face flush with embarrassment, but kept his head down. "Regular employees don't get private offices. You'd need to be at least a team leader level. Sorry, Ms. Banks, but that's company policy."
Winnie Banks wrinkled her nose but didn't argue back. Her gaze landed on Graham and Serena, and she rolled her eyes. "Who are you two? Why are you blocking the way?"
James spotted Serena and quickly gave her an apologetic nod. Serena might have kept a low profile, but she was Keith's woman. He was caught between a rock and a hard place. He couldn't afford to offend either side.
Serena knew this wasn't his fault and wouldn't take it out on him. But Winnie's attitude practically screamed "I'm trouble" written all over her face.
James said, "They are your team leader and deputy team leader. They'll be showing you around the design department, Ms. Banks."
"Team leader and deputy team leader?" Winnie's eyes swept over both of them, her expression full of disdain. "They look so young. Don't tell me they got in through connections too? What makes people without real talent qualified to train me?"
Graham's face darkened. He was usually pretty straightforward, but Winnie had a special background.
His superiors had specifically warned him not to lose his temper with Winnie. If this little princess got upset, she could easily cost him his job. So Graham took a deep breath, ready to swallow his anger.
Just as he was about to let it go, Serena spoke up calmly, "I hope you really do have the talent you claim, enough to deserve that position."
Serena had always believed in not causing trouble unless trouble found her first. However, Winnie was about to work under her, and without cutting down that attitude, Winnie would never listen to anyone.
Used to constant flattery, Winnie was caught off guard by someone speaking to her so sharply. She immediately pointed at Serena. "Is this how all your company employees talk?"
"Let me remind you, Ms. Banks—you're also a company employee now."
James was sweating a little. He usually saw Serena as gentle and polite with everyone, so he hadn't expected her to get into it with Winnie like this.
Winnie let out a sneer. "Great. You're just throwing your weight around because you're a deputy team leader, bullying me before I've even started."
'Bullying?' Graham frowned, seeing how she'd just slapped that label on Serena. He wanted to defend her, but Serena pulled him back. "Don't bother arguing with her."
Winnie wouldn't listen anyway.
Winnie followed the two of them to her workstation by the window. The moment she saw it, she wrinkled her nose in disgust.
"How am I supposed to sit here with all this wind? Even if there's no office available, you can't expect me to work in such a shabby spot." Winnie spun around, scanning the room before pointing at another desk. "I want that one."
It was Serena's workstation.
Graham said, "Work stations are assigned randomly. If you have any complaints, go to HR. That's got nothing to do with us, and nobody's obligated to switch with you."
Graham's face turned cold as he watched her arrogant display. Nobody should be treated like this. Even if she got in through connections, she should at least show some humility.
He thought, 'Coming in here and pointing fingers at everyone immediately, this little princess probably thinks the company is her family business.'
Graham had initially been reasonably polite to her, and Winnie was quite pleased with him. But just minutes later, he'd already sided with Serena. Winnie was shaking with rage.
"I'm telling Mr. Brannon about all of you! He'll know exactly how you're treating me. It is workplace bullying!"
"Go ahead." Serena showed no intention of stopping her. If Keith couldn't tell right from wrong, she'd happily trade places with Winnie.
