Keith and Nate fumbled around, moving Serena to the sofa in the living room. Nate quickly injected the medication into her arm.
It worked perfectly. Serena, who had been restless and agitated, gradually calmed down under the drug's influence. Her flushed face returned to its standard color.
She didn't wake up; she was sleeping peacefully on the sofa. Seeing she was finally okay, Keith released a relieved breath and carefully lifted her.
He carried her back to the bedroom next door, then quietly closed the door behind him as he stepped out.
"Dude, what's wrong with you? You can still hold back after all that?" Nate couldn't help but comment. "You two are dating now. Having sex is normal. And if I'd shown up late, or if that drug had been stronger, you guys would've gone all the way anyway."
Nate could be blunt sometimes, but this pushed it even for him.
Keith thought back to what had just happened and took a deep breath. It took him a moment to regain his usual composure.
He said, "We are in a relationship, but I respect Serena's choices. She wasn't in her right mind just now. Unless it's absolutely necessary, I don't want to just take advantage of her like that."
Nate should have known better that Keith was a complete gentleman who believed in taking things slow and doing things right. Nate was the one being crude here.
"Well, at least that's sorted out now." Nate flopped down on the carpet without any regard for appearances.
He continued, "You have no idea. I was in the middle of clubbing when you called, then raced over here like a maniac. I'm worth some emergency fee, right?"
Nate wasn't exaggerating. His messy hair still had bits of gold glitter stuck in it, clearly fresh from some wild nightclub scene.
"Name your price." Today's situation was genuinely urgent. Nobody knew what would have happened if Nate hadn't shown up in time.
Nate was just being his usual smartass self, throwing it out without thinking. He never expected Keith to actually agree.
"Well, don't mind if I do then." Nate stretched lazily. "If there's nothing else going on here, I'm heading back. I really can't stay away from my cozy life much longer. Could you guys maybe have your emergencies during the day next time instead of dragging me out at night?"
"You want there to be a next time?" Thinking about everything that had happened today, Keith's expression grew cold. "Laying hands on my people right in front of me—that takes some serious nerve."
He'd initially thought Winnie was just another spoiled kid who had indulged her whole life, like a child throwing tantrums to get a favorite toy, willing to do anything to get what she wanted.
But that was supposed to be without hurting other people.
Since Winnie had dared to do something like this to Serena, she couldn't blame Keith for being just as ruthless in return.
"Don't leave tonight. Stay in the guest room. We don't know if Seri might have other complications later, so I need you on standby."
Perfect. Keith already had his hands full with Alyssa, and now he was stuck playing caretaker to Serena too.
But having a good relationship with Serena was positive for Keith.
Nate had known Keith for years, and this was the first time he'd seen him put this much effort into someone besides Alyssa. He'd honestly thought Keith would stay single forever.
Now Keith finally had someone by his side. That was definitely worth celebrating.
The thought made Nate feel a lot better. His fun night had been cut short, but he could live with that.
Nate sighed, "Alright, if anything happens tonight, just call me."
Keith finished tidying up and headed back to the bedroom. Serena was lying peacefully on the bed, fast asleep. Relief washed over him as he settled into the chair by the bed.
He wasn't planning to sleep tonight. He had no idea if Serena might have another episode later, and he'd only feel at ease if he stayed here to watch over her.
The night passed without him realizing it. When Serena opened her eyes again, she stared at the unfamiliar room in confusion for a few seconds before memories of the previous night came flooding back.
She bolted upright in bed.
"What's wrong, Seri?" Keith walked in holding a glass of milk, and seeing Serena like this, he immediately went over and wrapped her in his arms. "It's okay now. What happened yesterday is over."
Looking at Keith, Serena felt fear wash over her. Thank God nothing had happened last night.
She'd worked so hard to get where she was today. She couldn't let herself be destroyed by something like this.
"I'm sorry. I should have protected you better. I should have been more careful. I knew Winnie had designs on you, but I still let you out of my sight." Keith gently patted her back. "But don't worry, I'm here. Nothing happened last night."
Serena's body trembled slightly. Keith felt even more guilty, and after a long moment, she said, "How can this be your fault? I'm the one who wasn't careful. I walked into that room without checking what was going on inside first. Otherwise none of this would have happened."
Serena still remembered last night. Even though she'd been groggy from the drugs, she remembered everything that came after.
Keith hadn't taken advantage of her despite the effects of the drug. Serena was already grateful for that.
"It's over now." Keith's gentle voice whispered in her ear. If anyone saw the usually decisive Keith acting softly with Serena, they'd probably be shocked.
"So what happened after that? Did you really lock Winnie and that guy together?" Serena asked.
Last night's memories felt hazy and unclear. Serena couldn't tell if what she remembered was real or just her imagination.
"Yeah, it's true. I was so pissed off that I locked them in together," Keith said, overseeing Serena. "Do you think that was wrong?"
Serena caught the uncertainty in his voice and immediately shook her head.
She might be good-natured, but she wasn't a pushover. After what Winnie had done to her, Serena wasn't about to forgive easily.
"I thought you'd think I was being cruel," Keith said.
Serena shook her head again. "It's just giving her a taste of her own medicine. Though I wonder what it'll be like seeing her today."
"I already called in sick for you. You shouldn't go in today."
After everything Serena had been through last night, Keith had no intention of making her work today.
But Serena shook her head. "The partnership with Tims Group just got settled. It wouldn't appropriate if I didn't show up today."
