"I'm really okay now," Serena said.
She hadn't been hit by the car at all. Keith had come just in time. She hadn't even realized what had happened before he pulled her to safety, so the fear had only lasted a second.
They stayed hugging quietly in the bushes for a moment. Then, there was a commotion nearby. It was security guards from Brannon Creative Group, leading Winnie over from not far away.
"Mr. Brannon, this is the one who was driving the car," one of the security guards said.
Serena and Keith weren't surprised. They met Winnie's venomous stare. Serena pulled out of Keith's arms, her eyes turning as cold as frost.
"From the first day you joined the company, I never did anything to hurt you," Serena said. "What makes you hate me so much that you'd try to kill me?"
"You ruined everything for me—my whole life!" Winnie screamed hysterically, drawing the attention of several passersby. "Who do you think you are, acting all innocent and saying you did nothing wrong?"
Serena held her gaze firmly. "I didn't ruin you. You ruined yourself. You come from a decent family. You could have worked hard, or even barely tried, and still had more than most people get in a lifetime.
"But you just had to pick on others, steal what wasn't yours, and even use dirty tricks to do it."
She'd never wanted to do anything to Winnie. If Winnie hadn't tried to set her up last night, Winnie wouldn't have ended up in this mess.
"No need to say more to her," Keith said, taking Serena's hand. He tried to pass some warmth from his palm to hers.
Then he turned to the security guards. "She tried to kill someone. Call the police right now."
The guards came to their senses and quickly took out their phones to call.
Winnie, held back by the guards, kept spewing curses. But Serena didn't react at all like the words weren't meant for her.
Winnie broke down. "Serena, you'll get what's coming to you. I curse you!"
Serena's expression didn't change. She stared at Winnie calmly. "I'm not the one who did something wrong. I'm not the one who tried to kill someone. Why would I get that?
"Everything I have now is what I deserve. So your curse doesn't work."
The police arrived quickly. After all, trying to kill someone in the middle of the street was a big deal that could shake the whole city. If it wasn't handled right away, it might cause even more trouble.
Winnie was taken away soon after.
"We're really sorry, Mr. Brannon. We didn't spot it sooner." The security guards came over, looking apologetic.
"It's fine. It's not your fault," Serena said, having calmed down now. She nodded slightly at them. "Catching Winnie right away is good enough."
Even Serena herself hadn't expected Winnie to go to such extremes to hurt her.
The guards glanced at each other, clearly relieved.
"Let me take you home first. About Winnie, I'm sure the police will give us a fair judgment," Keith said, his voice deep and steady like it could chase away any chill.
This time, Serena didn't care about others' stares and leaned against him. "Okay. Let's go home," she said.
They hadn't even gone upstairs when Daniel called.
"Answer it," Serena said softly. "Even if we ignore him now, he'll just keep pestering us later. Better to get everything out in the open."
Once they were inside, Keith answered the call.
Daniel's anxious voice came through right away. "Mr. Brannon, we really know we're wrong. Winnie's still young. She can't go to jail. Please, I'm begging you, let her go!"
"Just because Winnie's young, she can go around trying to take someone's life?" Keith shot back. "If I hadn't saved Serena in time, do you have any idea what would've happened to her today?"
As soon as Keith spoke, Daniel's heart sank.
In business, Keith had always been authoritarian. No one dared to go against his decisions, especially on something like this.
"Mr. Brannon, how about this? I'm willing to make no profit from our collaboration. From now on, any deal with our company—I'll give up all my shares for free," Daniel said.
He tried to stay calm. "Serena's just an employee of yours. And she's unharmed, isn't she?"
Serena heard this and spoke up from the side. "Excuse me, Mr. Banks. Even an ordinary employee's life is still a life, isn't it? Besides, I'm not just some irrelevant employee. I'm Keith's girlfriend."
Daniel froze the moment he heard Serena's voice. At that point, he finally realized there was probably no turning back.
Keith was someone who fiercely protected his own. Even if it had been a regular employee, Daniel wouldn't have been sure that he could persuade Keith to let Winnie go. Let alone that Serena and Keith were actually a couple.
"We won't accept any kind of private settlement. Everything will be left to the police to judge fairly. Mr. Banks, you'd better watch your step. Don't contact me again," Keith said in a cold voice, then quickly hung up, ignoring Daniel's pleas on the other end.
"You shouldn't go out alone for a while," Keith said, looking serious. "After what happened last night, I had someone look into Daniel. He's involved in a lot of shady business."
Hearing that, Serena was startled.
Keith went on, "If you rush to confront him, he might get desperate and drag you down with Winnie."
The way Daniel had defended Winnie earlier showed he would never let this go easily.
"This is a society ruled by law. He shouldn't be that crazy, should he?" Serena ventured. But when she met Keith's worried gaze, she suddenly felt helpless and fell silent, not knowing what to say.
Keith said, "Your safety is the top priority. We can't take any chances. If something like today happens again, I might not be there in time to protect you."
Seeing how serious he was, Serena had no choice but to give in. "Got it. Starting today, I won't go out alone."
'If only to stop Keith from worrying about me, I'll let the people around me keep me safe,' Serena thought to herself.
"Good girl. Later, I'll pick a few people. They won't get in the way of your daily life, don't worry." A flicker of thought crossed Keith's eyes.
He thought, 'It seems that in the next few days, I'll need to keep an eye on Winnie's trial and dig deeper into the shady businesses Daniel's involved in.
'Only by dealing with all of it can I put an end to the trouble for good.'
