Keith was efficient. When Serena went to work the next day, she barely noticed anyone following her.
If Keith hadn't told her his people were already in place, she would've truly thought there was no one following her.
"Just put up with it for a few days. I'll take care of Daniel, too, and then you won't have to be so cautious," Keith said.
He'd already sent his men to investigate Daniel's shady businesses. The country was cracking down hard on this kind of thing. If they could put a full chain of evidence in front of the police, Daniel would probably get a longer sentence than Winnie.
The results came quickly.
Daniel's casino was fully shut down. Even though Keith hadn't shown his face when providing evidence, Daniel wasn't stupid. The only people he'd crossed recently were Keith and Serena.
Serena was at work as usual when Daniel stormed into Brannon Creative Group. A colleague warned her right away, and she hurried after him.
Daniel pushed through the crowd all the way and burst into the CEO's office.
"Keith, this is going too far," Daniel roared. "Winnie's still locked up, and I don't even know what her sentence will be. Now, you're going after my company, too?"
Keith looked up slowly from his papers, wearing a puzzled expression. "Mr. Banks, your company is perfectly fine, isn't it? Which one of your companies did I go after, exactly?"
Daniel had the words on the tip of his tongue, but suddenly realized he couldn't mention the casino in front of so many people. Otherwise, it wouldn't just be one casino going under. He might even end up in jail.
Serena had walked into the office by then. James immediately shooed out all the other colleagues who'd been watching, then closed the office door.
"Quit playing dumb. I know you did this." Daniel ground out. "Serena wasn't even hurt. Now, you're coming after me like this. Even a cornered rabbit will bite."
Finally, Keith set down the papers in his hand. He lifted his eyebrows, his gaze as cold as ice that had frozen for millennia, so piercing that Daniel didn't dare meet it.
Keith said, "I have only one demand. From now on, don't disturb our lives again. Winnie's case is non-negotiable. But as for your company and reputation, Mr. Banks, you'd better really be willing to throw them away for her."
Hearing that, Daniel took a deep breath. Insults hovered on the tip of his tongue, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get them out.
Serena thought, 'Yes, he truly dotes on her daughter. But is he willing to give up everything for Winnie? Can he actually do that?'
The moment Serena saw Daniel hesitate, she knew they'd almost certainly got him cornered.
Daniel asked, "If I stop bothering you, you'll leave me alone?"
Keith let out a scoff. "Mr. Banks, I think we have better things to do than waste time on pointless things."
Daniel weighed it up for a moment, then slunk away.
When Serena watched him leave, she let out a breath of relief, but still felt a twinge of worry. "Do you really think he'll stop going after us?"
It was like a test of family loyalty. Daniel had seemed ready to give everything for Winnie before, but now, he hesitated because of his own interests.
"I don't know. My people will keep watching over you for a while. If Daniel dares to come back, I'll make sure he ends up in jail for good," Keith said.
Though his tone didn't sound particularly harsh, Serena knew him well enough by now to know he meant every word.
What Daniel had done hurt others as well as himself. Exposing his actions was a small way of doing something good for society.
That matter settled for the time being. After Daniel left, he really didn't make any more moves, presumably too afraid to risk it.
And Serena got some good news, too.
"Seri, I'm coming back home. Surprised? Didn't see that coming, huh?" Lana Quinn's cheerful voice came over the phone.
Serena, who'd answered the call early in the morning, was a bit confused at first. Once she realized what was happening, a smile quickly spread across her face.
She, Lana, and Kristy had been best friends. But Lana had gone to Malvoria to study further and hadn't been back in years.
"Are you moving back for good this time, or just staying for a few days before going back?" Serena asked.
Lana sounded a little dramatic as she spoke. "Of course, I'm moving back permanently. You know my stomach. It just can't handle the food here. One extra meal here, and I feel like I'm wasting my life."
Serena couldn't help laughing at her complaint. They really hadn't seen each other in ages, and if Lana could move back, that would be great.
"I'm flying back tomorrow. You have to come pick me up, okay?" Lana said.
Of course, Serena would. With Winnie and the Tims Group issues sorted out recently, Serena had some free time. They hadn't seen each other for so long. It would be wrong not to go.
"What about Kristy? This is a big deal. I'm coming home. She should have time to come, too, right?" Lana asked.
Serena smiled, a little helpless. "I'm afraid that'll disappoint you. She's away traveling with her husband these days. She sent me photos a few days ago. They probably won't be back for a month."
Lana was a little disappointed, but since she'd decided to come back on a whim, she couldn't be too demanding. Besides, now that she was moving back for good, there would be plenty of time to meet up later.
The next day, Serena wrapped up all her work and headed to the airport. Just as she arrived, Lana was walking through the entrance.
The moment Lana saw her, she dropped her luggage and rushed into Serena's arms. "I missed you so much!"
Serena couldn't help smiling, "Welcome home."
They walked out of the airport. Keith had already arranged a car and driver. When Lana saw the car parked out front, she raised an eyebrow. "Girl, when did you get rich?"
It was a stretch limo. Serena sighed, "It's my boyfriend's car. I'm just borrowing it today. If I ever get rich, you and Kristy will be the first to know."
"Boyfriend? Sounds like he's no ordinary guy," Lana said.
She had heard a little about Serena's divorce from Victor while abroad. She'd thought it would take Serena ages to get over it after all those years she'd stuck by Victor through everything.
Lana thought, 'But now it seems Serena's just like me. When it was time to let go, she let go. Someone like Victor, that piece of trash, is better off with whoever wants him.'
