"Are you seriously hoping he's the kind of man who'd break his promise, dump me, and run to you instead?" Serena asked.
Chloe could barely think straight anymore.
The alcohol was hitting her hard. All she could really feel was Serena's hand wrapped around hers, a comforting warmth that surrounded her like a soft blanket. For a fleeting moment, Chloe seemed to understand why Keith had fallen for someone like Serena.
'She's warm. The kind of warm that makes you believe, no matter what happens, she'd take it in stride,' she thought to herself.
She was just about to say something when a shadow suddenly fell over them. Both Serena and Chloe looked up and realized they'd been surrounded at some point.
"Well, well. Drowning your sorrows alone tonight, ladies?" The guy in front whistled as he sat down at their table, completely uninvited.
"We're not looking to share a table," Serena said calmly. She could tell right away these guys weren't here with good intentions. But it was just her and Chloe tonight, and if things got physical, they'd be at a clear disadvantage.
"Come on, it's a bar. We're all here to have fun. Well, maybe make a few friends. No need to get all uptight."
He turned to one of the guys behind him. "Go grab my special bottle. Let's give these beautiful ladies something to celebrate."
"Got it, Duke! Be right back!"
People nearby were giving them a wide berth. Clearly, this guy, Duke, wasn't someone ordinary. Even the bartender didn't dare come close.
"Care to join me for a drink, gorgeous?"
Chloe didn't have much rationality left in her system. The booze, the mood, everything was off. And this kind of pickup line, especially delivered with such smug arrogance, pushed her right over the edge. She gave Duke a sweet little smile.
Just as he was caught off guard by it, she picked up her glass and flung the entire drink in his face. "You think you're worth our company? What a joke."
Serena was stunned. She had been trying to handle this in a softer way, hoping to talk their way out of it. She didn't expect Chloe to go straight for a fight.
Duke was shocked too. No one in this area had ever dared stand up to him, and now this girl just threw a drink in his face? 'Feisty. I like that.'
"Words are one thing, sweetheart. But throwing drinks? That's crossing the line," he spoke.
Sensing trouble, Serena quickly reached under the table and called the police. She also sent a message to Keith.
She now knew that whenever she ran into real trouble, she didn't have to face it alone. She could call Keith. Right now, with just the two of them here, they wouldn't stand a chance on their own.
"Duke, your drink's here—uh, sir?"
The guy came back carrying a bottle, only to freeze when he saw Duke's drenched face. He didn't even dare breathe.
This was Duke. No one messed with Duke. And now, soaked in liquor, humiliated in front of a whole crowd? These two girls were in serious danger.
But Duke didn't flinch. He wiped his face, poured a full glass from the bottle, and slid it across the table to Chloe. "Finish this, and I'll forget tonight ever happened. Sound good?" His eyes glinted with desire.
Yet before Chloe could answer, Serena stepped in, "She's had enough already. We're not drinking with you."
That bottle had been brought out from who knew where. Serena had no idea what might be in it. She wasn't about to let Chloe take the risk.
"So you won't drink my booze and you're throwing shade? You here to start trouble?" Duke's voice dropped, cold and threatening. "I'll give you one chance. Don't push it. This is my place. One word from me and no one's letting you out that door."
As soon as he finished talking, the guys behind him were already rolling up their sleeves, clearly ready to throw down.
Chloe had seen worse chaos abroad, and she was already in a foul mood. She couldn't help but laugh.
"You punks call yourselves tough? Please. You're just street rats playing gangster." Serena stepped in front of her protectively.
Duke reached toward Chloe, but his hand froze midair, blocked by Serena's slim, trembling frame.
'She's shaking. She must not be used to scenes like this. But she's still standing in front of me. She's not letting anyone touch me,' Chloe realized.
"You idiot," she muttered under her breath.
Duke's face turned icy. "Fine. If you're so eager to defend her, then you drink it. But nobody's leaving until that glass is empty."
He shoved the full glass toward Serena again. "Drink it, or I'm done being polite. Next comes force."
Serena picked up the glass.
Duke's expression relaxed into something smug. "Now we're getting somewhere. Guess you're the sensible one. Drink up and I'll make sure you both—"
He didn't get to finish because Serena threw the liquor straight in his face.
The second time stung worse than the first. He wiped himself off again, but the surrounding laughter made his face go dark. "I tried being nice," he growled, slamming a hand on the table as he stood. "You come in here acting tough, disrespecting me? You've got a death wish!"
He lunged forward, trying to grab Serena, but right then, police burst through the bar entrance. "Hands off!"
Officers quickly zeroed in on the chaos and slammed Duke and his guys onto the table. "Douglas Marino. You again? This month alone, how many times have we had to haul your ass in?"
The lead officer didn't even bother asking who started it. The moment he saw Douglas, he knew.
The cops moved fast, cuffing Duke and his lackeys while the bar crowd quietly turned their attention elsewhere.
Serena let out a breath, thinking, 'Thank God the police got here in time. If they hadn't, Chloe and I would've been in real trouble.'
"Thank you for your report, ma'am. Sorry about all this. Douglas is a known troublemaker around here. We've been keeping an eye on him, but without any real incident, we couldn't arrest him before."
Serena pressed her lips together and shook her head. She understood. "It's alright, officer. I really appreciate you getting here so quickly. But I do suspect that bottle Douglas brought over might have something illegal in it. Would you mind testing it?" she spoke firmly.
There was no solid proof, but the cops believed her enough to grab the bottle. "We'll take it in for testing. Thank you for the heads-up, miss."
