I wasn't badly hurt—just banged up enough for the doctor to send me home with orders to rest.
Lucas wouldn't even let me walk. He scooped me up like I was made of glass, ignoring my protests.
Jason's face darkened, his temper finally snapping. He grabbed my arm so hard his fingers dug into my skin.
"Jess, didn't you say you wanted to go home?"
I peeled his grip off one finger at a time, leaving angry red marks behind.
"Yeah, I am. Back to my boyfriend's place. Got a problem with that, brother?"
"Jessica, don't come crying to me later."
Jason let out a bitter laugh, more of a growl than anything.
Regret?
The only thing I regretted was not realizing the truth sooner.
The only thing I regretted was being Jason's stupid puppet in my past life.
Lucas carried me to the car, buckling me in like I might shatter. The engine roared as he hit the gas, tires screeching against the pavement. The whole ride, his hand never left mine, his grip warm and steady.
Back at his place, I felt grimy and exhausted. A shower was non-negotiable.
Lucas ran the bath without me asking, even digging out an unopened bottle of jasmine essential oil—my favorite. Then he opened the closet and pulled out a brand-new outfit, tags still dangling.

I raised an eyebrow.
He scratched the back of his neck, cheeks flaming. "Saw it while shopping and thought of you."
"And those?" I pointed at the racks of women's clothes taking up half the closet—all new, all my preferred brands.
"Don't—don't read into it, I just… I…"
I smirked, waiting.
Lucas exhaled, surrendering. "What's wrong with buying my girlfriend clothes?"
Since when did shy, stammering Lucas talk like this?
In my past life, I'd barely spoken to him before rotting away in that mental hospital. Only after I died did I catch a glimpse of how deep his love really ran.
