Fate had given me another shot, and this time, I wasn't going to waste it.
Lucas' face was inches from mine—so close I could see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes. My cheeks burned, tears welling up before I could stop them. The memory of his deathbed in my past life sliced through me like a blade, sharp and merciless. I flinched at the phantom pain.
Then his hand was on my face, warm and steady, brushing away my tears.
"Does the wound hurt again?"
The car accident had been minor—just scratches, really. Nothing compared to the agony I'd endured before.
But I wasn't in pain anymore.
Still, I couldn't tell him the truth—not about the accident, not about my rebirth. So I nodded, leaning into his touch like a starving woman.
"It hurts," I whispered, playing it up. "It hurts so bad. I think I need a kiss to make it better."
"Spoiled," he murmured, but his lips curled. His gaze darkened, pupils dilating as he licked his lower lip. "Just a kiss? That's all you want?"
Before I could answer, his hand tangled in my hair, tilting my head back. His mouth crashed into mine, relentless, consuming. Like he wanted to devour me whole. I melted into him, breathless, dizzy—
Then my phone rang.
Jason.
I groaned, fumbling to reject the call, but my fingers slipped—and suddenly his voice filled the car.
"Jess, after thinking about it, you should come home. You need someone to take care of you."
"Uh—" A gasp escaped me as Lucas nipped at my lower lip.
"Jess? What the hell are you doing? Answer me!"
"Don't get distracted," Lucas growled against my mouth.
I didn't have time to reply before he hung up—then claimed me all over again.
Thirty minutes later, I was still tangled in his arms when furious pounding shook the door.
"Lucas!" Jason's voice was pure venom. "Who the hell said you could touch her?!"
