I scared my parents so badly they wound up in the hospital.
Lucian bound my wrists and hauled me in for a full medical evaluation.
"Dr. Zimmer, how is she?"
Lucian threw a nervous look at Juliet Zimmer as she scribbled on her clipboard.
Her expression was grave. After a beat, she removed her glasses and massaged her temples with a weary sigh. Her gaze shifted between me and Lucian.
"It's advanced schizophrenia," she said finally. "And this particular personality exhibits clear antisocial tendencies. Why did you wait so long to bring her in?"
Lucian went ghost-white as his eyes locked onto me. "So... she's..."
I ignored him, studying Juliet with detached curiosity instead.
"Give us the room," Juliet told him.
Lucian shuffled out like a man heading to the gallows.
She replaced her glasses. "What should I call you?"
A thin smile curled my lips. "Ophelia."
"Do you mean Hamlet's Ophelia?"
I didn't contradict her.
When I exited, Lucian was slumped against the wall outside, looking wrecked. He sprang up at the sight of me. "You—"
"I'm Ophelia. Not Raina," I cut in.
His mouth worked soundlessly before words finally came. "You can't—"
"On Raina's behalf," I continued smoothly, "we're done."
He recoiled. "You're not her! You don't get to decide that!"
I gave a derisive laugh. "This isn't a negotiation."
As I turned to leave, his hand shot out to grip my wrist. "When did this happen?"
"The moment you stopped choosing her."
His eyes reddened. "Elaine was devastated by how Raina treated her! This was the only way to make things right. I never left Raina!"
I stayed silent.
His voice cracked. "Elaine's innocent in this! Her arm's destroyed, she's clinically depressed—what was I supposed to do?"
My hands balled into fists. "And Raina? Doesn't she deserve pity too?"
Lucian froze.
"You knew she grew up abused and alone. You reunited her with her birth parents just to watch them favor Elaine all over again. Elaine still has her family. Raina only ever had you."
His grip slackened.
I smirked. "When your little fantasy finally shatters, I hope you can keep pretending everything's fine."
