Lucian had been working overtime lately trying to atone for what he'd done to Raina. His first move? Kicking Elaine out of the Ferguson estate.
With me staying at the Simpson residence, my so-called parents didn't have the guts to show their faces. They had no choice but to slink off somewhere with Elaine in tow.
I was enjoying the peace and quiet until Elaine came barging in uninvited. "Raina! You thief! How dare you steal my things!" she shrieked.
I gave her my sweetest smile. "The name's Ophelia now. Try to keep up."
Elaine curled her lip in disgust. "You can call yourself whatever you want - you'll always be that same pathetic orphan."
Stretching back in my chair, I purred, "Funny how all these nice things belonged to that 'pathetic orphan,' isn't it?"
"You—"
Her face went ice cold as she suddenly whipped out a fruit knife from her purse. I caught her wrist mid-swing, twisting it until the blade clattered to the floor. "No need to frame me, darling. I'm happy to do the job myself."
While she gaped in shock, I fisted my hand in her hair and forced her to her knees. Tracing the blade lightly down her cheek, I sighed. "Hear that? Like music, isn't it?"
Elaine had never been on the receiving end before. She trembled like a leaf. "Please! I'll go! Just let me—"
The knife bit into both cheeks, drawing twin lines of red. Tears streamed through the blood as I leaned close to whisper, "Your real parents used to play this game with me daily. Any time they felt bored or drunk..."
"RAINA!" she screamed. "Lucian will destroy you when he finds out!"
I couldn't help but laugh. "Remember Aesop's fable about the boy who cried wolf?"
Before she could process this, I flipped the script - clutching the knife while fake sobs wracked my body. "Daddy... Mommy... please stop... I'll work harder, I promise..."
Right on cue, Lucian burst in. He sent Elaine flying with one kick, pried the knife from my fingers, and crushed me to his chest. "You're safe now, baby. I've got you."
His glare could have melted steel as he spat at Elaine, "I won't let her slander you ever again!"
