I slowly let my hands drop from my head, falling silent as I stared at him blankly.
Lucian clicked my seatbelt into place with a scowl. "Keep faking it and I'll toss you out on the street."
Would he really not hurt me? The question lingered in my mind.
My thoughts drifted back to my first day at that hellhole they called a school. A battered girl had approached me, hands trembling as she clutched a razor to shave my head. I fought back - bad move. They beat me until I was gagging on my own blood.
In the struggle, the razor hacked uneven chunks of my hair, slicing my scalp open in places. The girl wept as she worked, begging me to stop resisting. When it was over, they dragged me to a corner and beat me again. Their idea of a "welcome party."
I lay broken on the floor, barely drawing breath. The instructors unzipped their pants and pissed on me while laughing. "Be a good girl and the pain stops. Maybe." Through my tear-blurred vision, I watched as Kate - that was her name - got dragged away like a rag doll to some other room.
"We're here."
The car rolled to a stop outside the Simpson estate. Lucian got out and yanked my door open. When I didn't move, he grabbed my wrist.
His touch sent electric panic through me. I jerked away violently, tears already spilling over. "Don't touch me! Please, just don't!"
The memories came flooding back - the drunken instructor bursting into our dorm, grabbing me by the hair, throwing me across the room like trash. I'd gone limp, completely numb.
Now I pressed myself into the seat, shielding my face with one hand. "Please... I'm getting married soon. My fiancé is Lucian. I'll have him pay you - name your price..."
Lucian's patience snapped. He seized my wrist and hauled me out. "Cut the crap, Raina. I'm done with your little performance," he growled. "Want to act? I'll get you an audition. Just leave me out of your drama."
Lost in my trauma, I trembled uncontrollably, barely hearing his words. When he saw my tears still falling, his expression softened. With a sigh, he pulled me into an unexpected embrace.
"You really know how to play me," he murmured, gently rubbing my back. "Come on, no more tears. I'll take you shopping later - my treat. Any store you want."
