After Lucian spent nearly thirty minutes comforting me, I finally pulled myself together and walked home with him.
We hadn't even made it through the front door when I heard the sound of laughter and cheerful chatter spilling out into the hallway.
"Our sweet Elaine is always so thoughtful!" Mom's voice rang out warmly.
Elaine responded in that sugary tone she always used, "Then do you love me?"
"Of course! I love Elaine the most," Mom answered instantly, without missing a beat.
Dad quickly added, "Don't forget about me—I love Elaine too."
Lucian cleared his throat loudly, cutting through their little moment. All three heads turned toward us.
The second they noticed me standing behind Lucian, my parents' smiles vanished, replaced by uncomfortable expressions.
"Raina, you're finally back," Dad said flatly.
Mom's eyes zeroed in on my hair, her face twisting in disapproval. "You're a young woman. What possessed you to cut your hair like that?"
I stared at the floor, picking nervously at my fingernails. "It wasn't my choice. The school made me do it."
Her frown deepened. "Stop lying to us."
Dad crossed his arms. "We picked that school ourselves. We know their policies."
I shut my mouth. What was the point of arguing?
Whether it was my birth parents or these people, they were all the same.
Lucian stepped slightly in front of me, blocking their stares. "Leave her alone."
Elaine smoothly linked arms with our parents, flashing her perfect smile. "Dad, Mom, if Raina likes her hair, just let it go. She just got home—don't start a fight."
Mom gave me one last disappointed look before sighing. "Come eat."
I shuffled toward the table and was about to sit when she suddenly snapped—
"Wait! Your clothes are disgusting! Don't ruin my chairs!"
The room went dead silent.
I jerked back up, my face burning with humiliation.
Realizing how harsh she'd sounded, Mom quickly backtracked. "I didn't mean it like that."
Elaine turned to me, all sweetness. "Raina, you can borrow something from my closet."
Lucian stood and took my hand gently. "Let's get you changed."
He led me into Elaine's massive walk-in closet and pulled out a dress without looking. "Put this on. I'll wait outside."
I tugged at the frayed edge of my shirt. "I don't want to wear her clothes."
Lucian shoved the dress into my arms, his patience wearing thin. "Elaine was being nice. She's never done anything to you. Why do you always have to have an attitude with her?"
