Lucian kept his promise about the unlimited shopping spree, but the beneficiary wasn't who I'd expected.
Elaine burst through the front door like an excited puppy, her arms swinging with barely contained energy.
Lucian trailed behind, arms laden with glossy shopping bags. "Whoa there, speed racer," he chuckled. "You're gonna faceplant at that pace."
Then he saw me lingering by the staircase. His smile dissolved like sugar in hot tea, leaving an awkward silence thick enough to slice.
Elaine remained blissfully oblivious, grabbing my wrist with sticky-sweet enthusiasm. "Raina! Lucian went completely overboard—look at all these gorgeous dresses! I told him to stop, but he just wouldn't listen."
I pressed my lips together, studying the floorboards like they held ancient secrets.
"You barely have any clothes," she continued, fingers tightening. "Come try these on with me!"
Before I could protest, she yanked me toward the bedroom with surprising strength. Lucian deposited the bags and gave me a pointed look. "Elaine's trying to include you. Meet her halfway."
"Out, out!" Elaine giggled, shoving him through the doorway with theatrical modesty.
The moment the latch clicked, her sugary demeanor evaporated.
The deadbolt slid home with a final thunk.
Ice flooded my veins as her gaze turned arctic. I backpedaled, but not fast enough—her fingers twisted into my hair like barbed wire.
"Why couldn't you just die in there?" she hissed, wrenching my head back. "Those amateurs clearly went soft on you."
Tears pricked my eyes as fire lanced across my scalp. Through the pain, one realization crystallized: "You... you knew about the school?"
Her laugh was all venom. "Dumb little Raina. I chose that hellhole just for you. Everyone trusts sweet, perfect Elaine—your parents, Lucian, everyone."
Her hand closed around my throat before I could blink. Memories of dark corridors and laughing voices crashed over me as oxygen dwindled.
Black spots danced at the edges of my vision when she suddenly released me. I crumpled, lungs screaming as air rushed back in.
"Stay buried where you belong," she whispered, lips grazing my ear. "Everything here is mine."
Then chaos erupted—Elaine mussed her hair, snatched a crystal vase, and smashed it against the floor. With terrifying precision, she dragged her forearm across the jagged shards.
Blood bloomed across the tiles like some grotesque rose. My stomach lurched as Lucian's frantic footsteps pounded down the hall.
"Elaine?! What's happening?" The doorknob rattled violently.
Through the haze, I saw her smirk at me just before she unleashed a perfect, trembling sob: "Lucian... help me—"
His fists hammered the wood. "RAINA! OPEN THIS DOOR NOW!"
The metallic tang of blood filled the air as my world tilted sideways.
