Lucian's voice broke. "I didn't know the training school would..."
He trailed off, unable to finish.
After a heavy pause, he asked, his voice unsteady, "Did it hurt?"
I shoved him away, my expression blank. "What do you think?"
His throat worked as he swallowed hard. "I won't let them get away with this."
I bit back a bitter retort and said nothing.
He grabbed my hand, pressing it against his cheek. "Come home with me. Let me take care of you."
I yanked my hand back, disgusted. "And Elaine? You think she'd be okay with that?"
Lucian went silent at the sound of her name.
He and Elaine had been inseparable since childhood. If I hadn't barged into their lives, they'd probably be married by now.
She wasn't just his oldest friend—she was the girl who'd saved his life. That made her untouchable in his eyes.
And Elaine? She clung to him like a spoiled princess, throwing tantrums whenever things didn't go her way.
But what if Lucian found out her heroic little story was nothing but a lie?
A spark of dark amusement flickered in my gaze.
"I'll talk to her when she's calmed down," Lucian said, brushing his fingers through my hair. "You're still my fiancée. We will get married."
I jerked away from his touch. He stared at his empty hand, looking lost.
"We'll pick out a ring tomorrow. The wedding isn't far off."
I turned my back to him and closed my eyes, shutting him out.
A moment later, I felt the soft press of his lips against my forehead. "I'll spend the rest of my life making this up to you."
The second the door clicked shut, my eyes flew open, cold and sharp.
Making it up? I scoffed silently. That ship sailed a long time ago.
