The piano's condition left no doubt - someone had intentionally destroyed it.
Rafael knew exactly what this instrument meant to me. Normally, just someone touching it would've sent me into a rage, let alone seeing it wrecked like this.
Noticing my dark expression, he scoffed, "Relax, it's just some old piano. Jenna broke it, but I'll get you a new one. Why the attitude?"
I lifted the lid to reveal the keys - deeply gouged and dented. Resting on them was a pair of pink lace panties tied with a bow.
Rafael snatched them up quickly, stammering, "J-Jenna's! She must've forgotten them last time. Nothing happened between us, okay? Don't start imagining things!"
Those panties on my piano told me everything I needed to know. They'd actually... done that on it.
Looking at Rafael now, all I felt was pure disgust.
Guilt must have hit him because he suddenly grabbed my hand, changing the subject. "Come on Lily, let me take you for your prenatal checkup."
He'd forgotten I'd just come from the hospital. That there wouldn't be any more prenatal visits.
Not once in the past week had he asked why I was hospitalized. And this? The first time he'd ever offered to accompany me to an appointment.
All those times I'd begged him to come, he'd scolded me: "The company's drowning in work and you're making demands?" Like I was some unreasonable burden.
I just wanted what every expectant mother deserves - her husband by her side. If he'd come just once, it would've meant the world to me.
But now... no baby. No reason for him to pretend to care.
A sharp pain shot through my abdomen - probably aftereffects from the procedure. When I clutched my stomach, Rafael just frowned.
"Cut the act, Lily. You think pregnancy means I have to baby you 24/7?" The door slammed behind him.
I took my meds and slept until the pain faded. Waking up, Jenna's latest post glared from my phone:
[Best boss ever~ Came running when I got bad cramps <3]
A bitter laugh escaped me. To Rafael, his assistant's period pains mattered more than...
My phone rang - Rafael calling. For one stupid second, I thought maybe...
"Lily," his voice was urgent, "what brand of pads do you use? Jenna forgot to buy hers."
My stomach dropped. He wouldn't buy them for his own wife, but for her?
I remembered bleeding through my white pants once, desperate. When I'd asked him, he looked at me like I'd suggested murder: "You want me to buy those? Are you insane? How humiliating!"
But now? No disgust. Just concern... for Jenna.
