I ignored them and closed my eyes.
Seeing how cold I was acting, they got royally pissed.
They helped up Caelum—who was basically a sobbing mess—and headed for the door.
My best friend Betty heard I was in the hospital and came to visit me.
"Serapha, what the hell happened to you?"
She'd already heard about the whole divorce mess.
The story about my husband smashing a vase over my head to protect his childhood friend had gone viral online.
I'd become a joker.
Betty took one look at my bandaged head and whistled low.
"I thought you and Caelum were supposed to be relationship goals. How'd it get this bad?"
I didn't say anything for the longest time, then finally spoke up.
"You know that famous half-naked goddess sculpture?"
Betty looked puzzled. "The one from Europe? That nude statue that's like world-famous art?"
"Yeah."
Betty waited for me to keep going.
"Caelum's got one in his studio."
Betty blinked, then started laughing.
"No way. It'd have to be some cheap knockoff..."
"Bingo!" I cut in. "Total fake."
"But here's the kicker—"
"This one moves."
Betty's face went through about five different emotions before it all clicked. "OH MY GOSH! you mean..."
She didn't finish, but her expression said it all.
Half a month later, I got discharged.
Caelum showed up in these thin pajamas, reeking of cologne, trying to get close to me.
"Serapha, I know I've been neglecting you lately. It's just after you had the baby, the doctor said no sex for a while, so I've been hiding out in my studio. I messed up, okay? Whatever you don't like, I'll change."
His voice got all deep and smooth.
He wrapped his arms around me from behind.
After years of marriage, I already knew his trick.
This was his "let me charm my way back into your good graces" move.
And it used to work every damn time.
But thinking about that studio he never let me into made me sick to my stomach.
"Serapha..."
He held me gently from behind and started kissing my neck.
"All those times I ignored you—I'll make it up to you... Ow! Jesus, Serapha, what's your problem?"
Before he could finish his little speech, I shoved him away so hard he went sprawling.
Seeing how rough I was getting, Caelum finally ran out of patience.
"You bitch!"
"Serapha, I said I was sorry, I tried to make things right—what the hell else do you want from me?"
I looked at his flushed face.
Couldn't tell if he was red from anger or from getting his kicks somewhere else.
"I'm not throwing a tantrum. I already told you—I want a divorce!"
Said it like I was talking about the weather.
Caelum looked like I'd slapped him, still trying to guilt me into changing my mind.
"Serapha, what about to those wedding vows? Remember those?"
"You promised that no matter what, you'd always be on my team. That was what, five years ago?"
"And our daughter's barely three months old! How can you be so selfish? You really want to divorce me and make her grow up without a dad?"
"When did you get so cold?"
Caelum's eyes were all red and watery, giving me those puppy dog looks.
"If we split up, think about me and Lyra."
I let out this bitter laugh and stared him down.
"Whatever!"
"She's your own daughter! How can you even say that?"
Caelum looked totally devastated. He clenched his jaw. "Alright then. If you're really this heartless..."
"Maybe I should just take our baby and jump off this balcony."
He scooped up the baby and ran toward the balcony, but I didn't even budge.
I knew he was just trying to manipulate me. He'd never actually go through with it.
Besides, I'd overheard him telling someone that the woman he and our daughter couldn't live without was another.
And that person definitely wasn't me.
Sure enough, Caelum just stood there on the balcony holding the baby, looking like an idiot.
"You're really this heartless, Serapha!"
"You want this divorce so bad?"
"Fine! You got it!"
It was absolutely pouring outside, and he stormed back in soaking wet with the baby.
Not even five minutes later, Zephyra came bursting through the door.
She started going off on me immediately.
"You're such a piece of shit, Serapha! Did you forget about your car accident when the doctors thought you might never wake up? Caelum was at your bedside every single day!"
"Now you want to dump him?"
Zephyra knew my reputation around town—everyone thought I was this super loyal, caring person.
When I stayed quiet, she probably figured I was getting all nostalgic and would cave.
But I just said flatly.
"If he'd been the one, I would've done the same."
"Doesn't change the fact that I want to divorce."
