I felt a cramp in my abdomen like a sharp hot knife being shoved into the space in-between my uterus and prostate. The pain was so overwhelming it was like a tidal wave of fire knocking me out of my sleep and making me cry out in pain. Marco was immediately up and looking over at me. He moved to turn on the lamp that sat on the side table. His face the picture-perfect representation of concern.
"Honey what's wrong with you," he said getting up out of bed and walking over to my side in his boxers as a cried in pain. It was like this build-up of heat in me was trying to burst outwards. Nothing seemed to get me to stop focusing on the pain, not even staring at how his manhood swung in his undergarment.
"It hurts so fucking much Marco," I screamed through clenched teeth. He touched my forehead and pulled his hand back like I was filled with molten lava.
"Honey your burning up we got to get you to the Hospital as soon as possible," he said and started moving quickly around the house. He picked up his phone and I heard him talking to Dr. Nisbalm. I felt light headed and faint from the pain. My chest felt tight and my hands were shaking in pure fear. I couldn't lose one of the babies I'm way too attached to them to have one of them die and it was too early to deliver any of them. I didn't care what happened to me I just wanted my boys to be safe and sound inside of me as they should be.
Marco walked over to me and kissed my head as tears fell down my side when he was done with the phone call. I know he wanted to fix my pain but there was nothing he could do himself.
"I'm going to need for you to breathe deep and exhale I'm going to take you to the hospital okay," he said speaking to me as if I was slow while walking to the closet and grabbing some jeans and a long sleeved shirt. He slipped his clothes on and grabbed some shoes before coming to me with a handful of clothing. I stood up and cried out from the pain that was shifting to reach my lower back.
He helped me out of his basketball shorts that I was borrowing and helped pull up my maternity boy shorts and a pulled on my baggy watermelon print onesie that I had no desire to leave the house in. He grabbed both of our wallets and phones than his keys and lifted me up in his arms and carried me down to the garage and placed me in the backseat laying me on my side and putting the seatbelts around me. He got in the driver's seat and pulled off I could hear the Bluetooth in the car go off and heard the voice of my daddy in the other line.
Marco told him that I was on my way to the hospital and my dad was asking a ton of questions till he said that he was on his way and notifying my brothers. I tried my best not to scream and startle Marco as he drove which would only serve to put us in more danger. I closed my eyes and counted my heartbeats till I felt the car park and knew we were where I needed to be. I heard Marco get out but he didn't come for me. I was too scared to lift myself up so I waited for him to open the door. When he finally did he had a wheelchair sitting on the side of the car and he lifted me out. My toes curled from the pain as he placed me on the leather seat and started pushing me into the hospital. We walked to the counter where a younger looking nurse was on her phone since it was three in the morning and the lobby wasn't full of people.
"Ma'am Dr.Nisbalm called ahead this is an emergency we need his team to come help till he gets here," Marco said loudly at the woman who largely ignored us. She mostly just looked up while chewing her gum with gusto.
"Sir calm down there is no need to yell," the lady said with an attitude and for the first time in forever I went off. I was impressed with how she used her tongue to shift the gum around while she spoke.
"IF YOU DON'T LIKE YOUR FUCKING JOB THEN QUIT BECAUSE YOU ARE A NURSE WHO HAS TO BE READY TO BE EMPATHETIC AT ALL TIMES. THAT IS YOUR DAMN JOB. YOU ARE A DAMN NURSE YOUR JOB IS TO ADVOCATE FOR PATIENTS AND MAKE SURE WE ARE FEELING OKEY. YOU NEED EMPATHY FOR THIS FUCKING JOB WHICH I CAN NOT TELL IF YOU HAV. NOW GET ME DR.NISBALM'S TEAM BEFORE, HAND TO GOD, I WILL SHOW YOU JUST HOW MUCH PAIN IM IN, "I shouted at her and she looked at me roughly. The pain in my body was spreading but the dose of adrenaline numbed it into more of a massive feeling of pressure rather than a stabbing pain.
"Ma'am hurry the fuck up this is an emergency, were in an emergency room where emergencies are resolved quickly to save lives," Marco said angrily. I was impressed with how he didn't can her a bitch even though I could tell he wanted to call her that and much more at the moment. He was a gentleman and his core and I was going to make sure his sons had that personality trait just like him.
"Fine," she huffed at us, "can I get Dr.Nisbalms team to the emergency room desk there are two patients waiting here they said it was an alleged emergency," she said into the intercom. I unlike Marco was not as gentle in situations like these and was willing to put on a show. I figured there was a high chance she wouldn't want to get embarrassed at her work but she as acting as if I wouldn't.
"Bitch I'm about to go to jail for an alleged assault on a dumb asshole," Marco said showing a side I hadn't seen since he saved me in the alley.
"Elm, Marco," a middle Eastern looking nurse ran to us with two other guys in maroon scrubs wheeling a bed along with them. She had her deep brown hair wrapped securely and her face was bare. We had seen the group a few times in the last two months. Dr.Nisbalm had trained a team to deal with our situation if something were to come up and he was far away.
"Farrah, somethings wrong he's really hot and in pain," Marco spoke for me his voice for fear and concern.
"Okay let's get him laying down I want the baby's and him lying flat so the blood can flow evenly," Farrah said to Daniel a dark-skinned man and Maxwell a Polynesian surgical nurse with long hair fixed in a clean braid that flew behind him. They helped me stand and we're patient with me as I cried out in pain while at the same time being placed me on the bed and wheeled down the halls of the hospital.
"Elm," the voice of my Dad shouted falling into step with everyone. He had appeared from nowhere and I was thankful for it.
"Daddy," I said trying to breathe evenly. I felt his hand grab onto mine and Marco grab onto the other and then everything went dark. My vision had given out and it felt like I was swimming in jello.
Beep
Beep
Beep
I opened my eyes slowly squinting from the brightness of the lights around me but more specifically the one above my bed. I had a weird sensation going through me that felt really good. Nothing seemed to have any substantial sensation in my body.
"Uhhh," I groaned as my eyes got used to the light.
"Elm," my brother Alder's voice sounded off to the right side of me.
"Elm," my name was shouted by almost all of the important men in my life.
"Did I lose any of them," I asked weakly it was the first thing I could think to ask. I was already bracing myself for bad news before they could even speak a word to me. I was sure tears were soon to come.
"What," Marco asked rubbing the side of my face. His palms moist from worrying about me. It was sort of gross but I welcomed even a sweaty touch when I needed some comfort.
"Did I lose my babies, I'm on some medicine they wouldn't put me in medicine if I'm pregnant," I started to cry which confirmed my thoughts less than 30 seconds ago.
"Honey calm down, they are all fine an healthy. I promise you with everything of importance to me on the line," Marco said and kissed my cheek.
"I'm going to get the doctor," Pine said getting up and leaving the room. He looked uncomfortable and I wouldn't hold it against him, knowing what he went through.
"You scared us all, Elm," my Dad said to the side of me. He looked haggard looking and had kept blinking which meant he was tired.
"I'm sorry," I said softly truly upset to have frightened him.
"It's fine," my Dad said and kissed my forehead.
"He's awake," Dr. Nisbalm said entering the room.
"What happened to me," I asked foregoing pleasantries we were too common with each other to really need them especially at this urgent time.
"It looks like your babies are growing nice and big. That would be good but the thing is you aren't growing enough. They are sapping all the nutrients and water you have been consuming. We have you hooked up to an IV but we are going to have to kick up your food and drink intake. Sadly I'm also going to put you on strict bed rest for the remainder of your pregnancy. Your metabolism doesn't seem to need much to burn calories so I want to cut that by limiting the amount of time you spend moving," Dr. Nisbalm said.
"We also are going to start you on a fattening but nutritious diet so you can have more energy to share," he added.
"You've been knocked out for nine hours and we have been pumping the IV fluids in I want to keep you for a few more hours till you are feeling better then we can get you sent home. I know this was a scary situation but if you look at it as just a small bump before you get to the light at the end of the tunnel. I swear it won't seem so bad once this was all over. I'm going to write you a prescription for Acetaminophen that you can take twice a day for pain," Dr.Nisbalm said scribbling in his doctor's pad and walked away.
"I was so scared you were out for a while and you were sweating bullets. I thought something would happen to you or the babies and I know you wouldn't be alright if something happened to our sons," Marco said placing a kiss on my chest.
"You're going to have to eat a lot more so we don't have heart attacks," Alder said.
"I know, I know," I said feeling tired.
"The meds they gave you will probably make you sleepy," Pine said from the corner of the room. I know he had to be uncomfortable in the hospital. He had just been to the doctor's office for a check-up and was barely functional till his results came back clean.
I could barely hold my eyes open much longer. I felt comfortable going to sleep knowing my kids were alright. That was all that mattered to me.
