"Hey Mrs. Olsen," I said running past her while pushing the running stroller with me.
"Goodmorning Elm and company," she said and I could hear the sound of her door slam shut. She was running late for work and obviously in a hurry. I enjoyed taking the boys on my morning runs and letting them get a dose of fresh air. I went from a run and transitioned down into a brisk jogging pace as I turned the corner into the street. The babies were making squealing noises and entertaining themselves with the toys that were attached to their stroller seats. I continued my jogging pace all the way out of the community before stopping at the light quite winded from running. I looked down at the boys and made sure their blankets were still on them since it was a little chilly. Maddox managed to pull his hat off and had it in his mouth. I pried it from his gums and place it back on his head and stood up looking at the signals. I adjusted my oversized hunter green hoodie that hung past my butt covering a good portion of my almost skin tight running pant. The sun was barely up so even with my contacts in I couldn't see too far so waiting for the signals would be just what I'd have to do. I kicked dirt off the bottom of my shoes while waiting for the light to change colors. k
When the light finally signaled that it was appropriate to walk and I took off with the stroller across the intersection into the shopping plaza. A red car looked like it was about to run the red light and I was prepared to freak out if the driver did decide to make the grave mistake and endanger my children's life but it halted to a stop. I crossed over to the other sidewalk and slowed down to a comfortable walking pace. I pushed the stroller along the sidewalk that was filled with storefronts. I decided to go into the Publix which was my least favorite store for obvious reasons and went to the bakery section for a loaf of bread. I then walked to the baby section to pick up some of the all natural apple juice that they all loved to drink down. When I was done getting what I needed I made my way to the cash register where a sweet older lady checked me out. I exited the Publix and walked to the local coffee shop next door. I loved the smell of the place and had developed a caffeine addiction. I ordered myself a White Chocolate Latte and sat down next to the pickup area with the boys.
"Hey aww they are so cute," A white lady whom I didn't know nor trust walked up and touched Ozias on the nose then walked away. I saw red and was about to cause a scene but she left out of the building before I could say something and my name was called. I hated when people touched the children. I didn't know her in the least, she could be a pedophile, have horrible hygiene, be carrying the plague. It was worse then when people would try and touch my hair, I wasn't even the type to be aggressive but when it came to my kids I could be a lion. I walked over to the barista and grabbed my drink, she gave me a sympathetic look as I took it from her and smiled before leaving with the kids. The walk back was slow and filled with me talking to the kids about manners and.
"When you get older if someone puts their hands on you without your permission I want you to hit them, well if it's a woman tell them off. Actually, don't let her beat your ass give her at least three clear warning and strong shove at the most. You three should be the opposite of Daddy okay, I don't want people to run over you like I get run over sometimes and think that it's okay," I said to them and they all looked at me in confusion then went back to their own little world. I crossed back over to the intersection taking my time while drinking my latte all the way to the sidewalk without any trouble. As I was walking I noticed an all black Toyota with super dark tent driving into the neighborhood. The neighborhood I lived in was big so it could have been anyone but something about the speed the car was going made me uncomfortable. I slowly started to pick up the speed in which I was moving making it seem like I was resuming my run. I was soon at a jog making sure I didn't look back at the car that was moving a little bit faster now. I took a turn on a side street that wasn't mine but bent around at the far end to enter the street I lived on. I could hear one of the boys crying but I was too scared to stop. The car didn't make the same turn it kept going forward but that didn't stop me from running all the way home and entering through the back. We kept the back door unlocked which would change in a minute. I pulled the screen door open and got into the house panting and trying to catch my breath while two of the boys was screaming and crying for assistance.
"Yo, what's going on," Tyler said running into the room.
"Can you get them to please," I said noticing I spilled coffee on myself. I stood up still trying to catch my breath and walked upstairs to my room reading into my unzipped pocket for my phone. I made it to my room and stripped out of my clothes dialing my Father's number in conjunction with everything else I was doing. I walked into the bathroom and grabbed a rag and began wetting it as the phone rang. My Father finally answered as I wiped the coffee off of my arm.
"Good morning," my Dad said in a chipper tone.
"Daddy I think he found me. London, there was this car and its windows were tinted too dark for me to see who it was inside but I think it was following me. It was driving so slow and kept behind me so I ran with the kids all the way home. I may be paranoid but I just felt like something was wrong and I can't shake this fearful feeling that I am having," I said into the phone then sat on the edge of the tub holding my stomach ass I heaved up and down.
"Describe the car to me," my dad said in a serious voice.
"Black Toyota with silver rims, sorry I didn't get the e model but it did have silver door lining," I said really trying to recall some significant details.
"That's not much to go on. Are you there alone," he asked.
"No Tyler is with the boys," I said to him.
"Alright, lock the doors and I'll be over there soon," he said and I could hear his keys jingling through the speaker of my phone.
"Okay please be fast," I said.
"I will Darling," he responded and hung up. I took a quick shaky breath before I dialed Marco's number. I knew he had a meeting so I wasn't surprised that he didn't answer my call even though I was praying that it would be over by now. I had to settle for making a voicemail. I told him what I had told my Dad before I was cut off. When I was done I stood up and took a deep breath and made my way to the bedroom and went into my closet grabbing one of Marco's sweaters to comfort myself with his scent. I then grabbed some jeans and took a deep breath before leaving the room and walking downstairs to the kitchen. When I got down there I saw the boys in their high chairs facing the television that was playing Dora the Explorer.
"Hey what's going on," Tyler asked me at the sink where he rinsing bottles.
"I think this guy name London has found me, a car followed me earlier. I called my Daddy and he's coming and I'm waiting on Marco to get out of his meeting and call me," I said to him as I walked over to the boys who were watching Boots climb a tree asking them to count along. I went over to them and kissed each of their heads.
"I'm sorry for scaring you three, Daddy had a moment," I said to them then sat on the couch.
"Can you make sure the alarm is on," I asked Tyler who had just finished the dishes.
"No problem," he said walking away.
I was so nervous and jumpy waiting on my Father to come so I distracted myself by getting up and organizing the dishes in the cabinets till the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it," Tyler said undoing the alarm as I was lining the mugs up by size and color.
"Elm," my Dad shouted which startled Maddox who started crying. I picked him up and started bouncing him waiting for him to stop crying.
"Daddy you scared him," I said as he ran over to me and pulled me into a tight hug.
"Look I can't do anything with the information you gave me officially, but I have put some feelers out for the car with some of my buddies in this district," My Dad said taking a still crying Maddox from my arms.
"I understand," I said upset. Maddox seemed to calm down immediately in my Dad's arms and was back to gargling and looking around.
"Until I can get more information I want you to stay indoors when you can and drive instead of walking. Just until we know it's safe for you to be out and about alone," My Dad told me looking me in my eyes.
"Alright, I will," I said walking to the refrigerator and grabbing a bottle of cold water. I uncapped it and took a sip.
"I want you to keep this, though," he said walking over to put Maddox back in his seat information of the television. He dug into a bag I hadn't noticed was on his back and pulled out a case. He put the metal box in my hands, it was heavy and cold. My hands fumbled to unlatch it and pull the lid open revealing a black gun. I looked up at my Dad.
"It's just for protection I know you don't like guns but it's better for you to have a way of protecting yourself," My Dad said to me. It was true that I hated guns even before I got snatched. My Father used to show us how to work them and would have to force me to learn how to use it but the knowledge was there as clear as day. I closed the lid and nodded to him knowing that it would be in my best interest to have some form of protection in the house, it was actually really careless for us to not have a gun.
"If you have to use it just say I left this at your house for storage," My Dad said to me.
"Alright Daddy," I said walking the gun to the pantry. Tyler walked back in the room and sat on the couch just as the door slammed and the alarm went off. The boys all started crying this time. I placed the gun on the ground in the corner and ran over picking Ozias up, while Tyler grabbed Calloway and My Father held Maddox again.
"Elm is you okay," Marco said sweating. His light pink dress shirt was unbuttoned and his sleeves were rolled past his elbows.
"I'm fine, I'm fine," I told him as he lifted me and the baby in my arms up and held his strong arms around me.
"I can't do much right now but I've asked a few of my buddies to keep an eye out, you should see patrol cars coming through the neighborhood every now and then," my Dad said to him.
"Thanks, John," Marco said placing me on the ground and taking his son from my arms. Everyone started talking but I was so overwhelmed I had to walk away. I made my way up the stairs and to my bedroom knowing what was about to happen. It was like all the happiness I had stored over the months came crashing down. I fell in my bed and started crying into the blankets my tears wetting the fabric underneath me.
"Why can't this all be over."
