Something was up with my Dad, I could tell from his posture and the look on his face. It could have been something with mom because he had been really hormonal lately but doubted it since Dad was so happy to be having another baby and laughed anytime Mom went on a hormone-fueled tangent. I came back from my really early run and saw him already up looking like he was about to go somewhere and something told me to follow him. As he was in the kitchen I quickly ran into his and mom's bedroom where mom was knocked out and swiped his keys. It was a bold and dangerous move but it was worth it. If mom lets alone dad ever find out I took the car I'd be dead and buried. I heard the garage door open and ran downstairs just as the engine to my dad's car cut on. I slowly opened the garage door hearing the alarm beep. I knew that nobody was up this early on a Sunday morning so nobody would come to follow me. I watched as my dad pulled out of the driveway and I ran to moms car not hesitating to cut it on and pull out of the driveway. I could see the tail end of dad's Audi and decided to keep my distance as I began to follow him. I was a pretty good driver not as good as Ozias but I was confident that I wasn't going to get pulled over. Dad hit the interstate and I almost lost him but managed to spot his car amongst the crowd. I didn't know what I was doing I just knew that something was unusual and I had to figure it out.
I trailed him for a long time all the way to San Fransisco. He kept driving seemingly lost as to where he was going until he pulled up to the front of a townhouse. Outside sat an Asian man with an earbud in one of his ears. I saw the tail lights of my father's car go out and saw him get out. I immediately dipped my head down so he couldn't see me through the decently tinted windshield. After a few moments, I tentatively peeked out the window and saw my dad at the front door and the Asian guy laying on his side looking like he was in pain.
My dad knocked on the screen door with what looked like a ton of force. Seconds later Germany opened the door. At first, his face looked ferocious then he notices it was my father and looked like he wasn't surprised that my dad was at his front door. With a nod, Germany let my dad inside. I just knew I needed to see what was going on so I got out of the car and ran to the side of the townhouse finding myself in a small alley. I saw a large window but it was a solid two feet taller and I didn't see any way for me to increase my height and glance inside. After trying for what felt like forever to get a look inside I defeatedly walked to the front of the house only to hit what felt like a wall. Stumbling I fell back and looked up to see my dad looking down at me.
"Well you don't have the aptitude to be a detective," he said with a straight face.
"What the hell are you doing here, and why is Elm's car parked twenty feet away," his voice was stern letting me know just how much I had fucked up.
"Ummm," I said trying to find a way to talk myself out of this.
"Let me answer that for you. You were being nosey and decided to take a car you don't pay for all to find something out that I would have told you if you would have asked me. Name a time I didn't answer a question you or any of your brother's had for us with as much honesty and clarity as possible."
"Never," I said realizing my private detective moment was in vain because they didn't hide things from us.
"Exactly, if you would have asked I would have told you what I was doing," he said looking disappointed in me which really hurt.
"Sorry, dad I just wanted to know what was going on. You looked concerned when you left I didn't know if you were in trouble or not," I said to him honestly.
"Maddox no offense but I've been trained to be deployed in a war zone I don't need any help. My job is to protect you right now, when I and Elm get old then you worry about protecting us," he said to me.
"When you get old," I said under my breath.
"What was that," he responded quickly.
"I asked how much trouble am I in," I responded not being bold enough to try my father.
"Get in your mom's car and follow me," my dad said turning away from me and walking down the sidewalk to his car and I did as I was told and followed him all the way back near the house where we ended up at his favorite breakfast place. He got out the car and I got out of moms and walked inside with him. It was a self-seating place so we found a booth in the corner.
"Why are we here," I asked him the moment my butt hit the seat.
"How's Wylder I haven't seen her in a week or so," he asked me.
"She's fine, she's been writing her college applications for MIT so I've been giving her some space," I told him.
"Do you love her,"?
"Yeah," I answered the question.
"So you would do anything to defend her the same way I'm trying to do with you guys," my dad said. I was sensing he was going somewhere with this but didn't know where.
"Yeah, Dad, what are you getting at," I asked getting a little frustrated that he was talking in circles.
"I went and talked to Germany to ask him a few questions. To my surprise he was transparent but still, I didn't get the answers I wanted. I thought he might be related to your father's kidnapper but it doesn't seem that simple. See Germany is adopted so his name could be coincidental. Now I would have taken that and moved on but the look on Elm's face when he saw Germany at the hospital, it was like your mom saw a ghost. Now one sign is a coincidence, two is circumstantial, the third is a pattern. I don't have the third clue as to what can be going on but I'm looking for it and when I do," I listened intently as he told me what he was thinking and at the same time realized just how serious he was about protecting his family.
