A clear look of displeasure crossed Benedict's face.
The Stonor family's punishment was no joke. It wasn't some ordinary whip—it was a specially crafted iron one. The pain it caused was intense.
Even a grown man could end up in bed for days after fifty lashes, let alone a delicate woman like Eliza.
Standing off to the side, Sophie couldn't hide the gleam of satisfaction in her eyes. 'I can't believe Eliza's walking straight into this.
'Now I just have to figure out how to get Father to agree. Once he does, those fifty lashes will probably take half her life.'
But what Sophie didn't expect was that she wouldn't have to lift a finger. When Gabriel asked Eliza, she shocked everyone by volunteering to take the punishment herself.
"Are you serious?" Gabriel asked, surprised by how willingly Eliza was accepting such a heavy punishment.
He frowned, thinking back to all the schemes Eliza had used to win his favor. His eyes narrowed, and he warned sharply, "I can't stand people who try to put on a show in front of me."
Eliza lifted her head, meeting his gaze with a look full of contempt. She let out a bitter laugh and said, "So what should I do, Father?"
She thought bitterly, 'Be obedient, never fight for attention, let Sophie walk all over me, let everyone mock me, let my family turn a blind eye over and over again—until I'm broken and desperate enough to die? Is that what you want? For me to not be 'acting'?'
Her words hit like a punch, and her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. A quiet sadness spread over her, like a dark cloud.
Her defiant, pained gaze caused Gabriel's eyes to narrow sharply. For the first time, he felt a flicker of confusion.
He couldn't understand why Eliza was so tortured, or why she was so stubborn.
After a brief moment of surprise, Gabriel looked away, his face hardening.
He flicked his sleeve, turning his back on her. "You admit your mistake and still refuse to change? Fine, then your punishment will be worse. Benedict, take her away. Fifty lashes. Not one less."
Benedict gave Eliza a long, silent look, then said nothing more. "Let's go."
Eliza followed him out, obedient but quiet.
The Stonor family's punishment was always carried out in the private chapel beneath the church, in front of the family's memorials.
Eliza kneeled on the ground, sitting up straight.
From the moment she entered the chapel, her gaze was locked on her mother's memorial plaque. Her eyes were filled with longing.
In her previous life, after being cast out of the Stonor family, she'd never seen her mother's plaque again.
When she was brought back, she saw the servants had taken her mother's plaque and used it as firewood.
None of her brothers had stopped it.
Despite being her blood relatives, they stood by when Sophie had said, "Your mother was the one who killed mine," and without hesitation, they removed her mother's plaque and replaced it with Sophie's mother's memorial.
Her father, cold and distant, had said nothing. He'd always turned a blind eye, silently allowing one daughter to destroy the other, with no regard for his first wife.
"Eliza," Benedict said, taking the iron whip from the servant. His voice was smooth but firm. "I'm giving you one last chance.
"If you swear, in front of our ancestors and Mother's spirit, to get along with Sophie, to stop playing those dirty, underhanded games, I'll talk to Father and try to get him to go easy on you. What do you say?"
Eliza lowered her eyes slightly, her hands pressed together as she silently prayed for her mother's peace, wishing she could be reborn, far away from the Stonor family's mess.
Then, in a calm but cutting voice, she replied, "Benedict, has anyone ever told you that you're incredibly hypocritical?"
Benedict's gaze instantly turned ice-cold. "You still don't see what you've done wrong?"
He couldn't believe that, even now, Eliza was so stubborn. 'Looks like only when she feels real pain will she finally break that rebellious streak of hers.'
Without another word, Benedict swung the whip down without hesitation.
