The next day, after her morning class, Eliza said goodbye to Mary, taking the two gifts with her as she descended the mountain toward Hasen City.
Eliza politely declined Nolan's carriage offer, preferring to use her own. With Renee as her companion, they embarked on a leisurely journey to Hasen City, enjoying the freedom of driving their small carriage.
"Hey, Lord Caleb, look down there!" On the crowded streets of Hasen City, a young man at a tavern window excitedly grabbed Caleb's sleeve, his voice buzzing.
Caleb snapped, visibly irritated by the interruption, "Can't you see I'm busy? You made me spill my drink!"
"Goodness, it's her! Lord Caleb, stop drinking for a moment and look! Isn't that the Holy Lady of Walden, your former fiancée?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, the room buzzed excitedly, and the other young men crowded around the window like eager children.
"Where is she? I want to take a look too!"
"Are you certain? I couldn't see clearly. Could you confirm if it's her?"
"Look, Lord Caleb! She's in that small carriage down there. Surely you recognize her?"
Before Caleb could react, someone shoved him toward the window. Still dazed, he blinked in confusion, but one glance at the figure in the small carriage below jolted him awake like a bucket of cold water.
He was stunned, thinking, 'Eliza! What was she doing here? And why now, of all times?'
Caleb went stiff, his father's harsh warning echoing in his mind: "Eliza Stonor's standing isn't what it was, and whatever connection you two had is finished. Steer clear of her. I'll break your legs if I catch you anywhere near her again!"
The mere thought made Caleb's knees weak. His father never made empty threats; if he threatened to break Caleb's legs, he would do it.
To prevent further issues, Caleb decided to avoid any risks. He quickly looked away and returned to the private room, hoping to avoid more problems.
His boisterous friends weren't going to let him get away with it. "Hey, what's going on with Lord Caleb?"
"Why does he run away the moment he sees her?"
"Hold on, is Lord Caleb trying to escape?"
"Is Lord Caleb this scared now?"
"I heard Lord Caleb was deeply embarrassed by the Holy Lady, and then Prince Nolan reprimanded him severely. It's understandable why he's afraid."
Caleb flushed, snapping, "Shut up! I was never timid! When did I get beaten up?"
"It's true then! I heard everything. It happened at Marquis's estate. I heard the swelling on your face was so bad you couldn't even leave the house."
"Oh my!"
"Really?"
"Of course it's true! It happened right after the Holy Lady took her vows. Lord Caleb was so embarrassed afterward that he wouldn't leave the house for days. His face was so swollen that he was practically unrecognizable!"
These wealthy young men, who spent their time idly drinking and goofing off, barely knew Caleb. They seemed to find making him the target of their jokes amusing.
Caleb's face grew even redder as he glared at Lincoln. "If you can't be quiet, don't say another word!"
"Oh, look! He seems angry now, doesn't he?"
"Hey, no worries! We're just kidding around—all in good fun."
"Lord Caleb, why would you react so strongly if it wasn't true?"
The group exchanged knowing looks as they each took turns pressing Caleb for information.
Caleb exclaimed angrily, "That's completely false! Who put you up to spreading these lies? I'm warning you, stop talking before you regret it!"
"Hey, we were only kidding around. There's no need to get upset."
"Exactly."
"You looked over here, then suddenly left. It's understandable why we might have made the wrong impression."
"If you believe we're mistaken, please provide evidence to support your view."
"It's more intense because one of the main players is right there." The group teased and burst into laughter.
Caleb, already irritated by Eliza's presence, seethed with anger. Glaring at them, he spat, "Don't think I'm unaware of your games. Prove something? I don't need to prove anything to you."
"That's a bit harsh, don't you think?" one remarked playfully.
"We're all friends here," another added. "There's no reason for us to want to embarrass you."
One of them gave a sly smirk. "We were curious after we happened to spot the Holy Lady."
"She was just a girl who followed Lord Caleb, but now she's the unapproachable Holy Lady. What a change, right?"
"Lord Caleb, doesn't it bother you that Lady Eliza dumped you as soon as her social standing changed? Doesn't it hurt? Don't you feel even slightly tempted to get back at her?"
He was angry indeed; just seeing her fueled his anger. But revenge seemed impossible.
Caleb scowled. "Cut it out. I already told my dad I'd leave her alone."
"Lord Caleb, your words make you sound cowardly."
Stifling a laugh, one of them covered his mouth. "We never said revenge meant physically harming her."
"You're right, Lord Caleb. Don't overthink it."
"Perhaps you still fantasize about wedding the Holy Lady and making her your consort?" Everyone was all too familiar with Caleb's infamous declaration from back then.
Caleb whirled around, fixing the loudmouth with an icy stare. "Silence!" he growled. "Or I'll do it for you."
Another chuckled, his voice light and teasing. "Come on, Lord Caleb, don't get so worked up. Whether you want revenge or not, it's your choice—we won't pressure you. We're just offering some friendly advice."
"We understand you don't want to hear it, so we'll stay quiet."
Caleb was stubborn, so they knew better than to pressure him directly. Instead, they teased him mercilessly before feigning concern to pique his interest. Finally, they made it seem like helping them was his idea, leaving the decision entirely up to him.
Caleb fought to contain his frustration, but it overwhelmed him. Despite his father's warning, he pretended not to care and said, "Fine, if it's for my good, go ahead. I'll listen—a little. But don't expect me to take your advice."
