When Mary learned that Eliza was heading to the Marquis's estate, she couldn't help but frown. She asked, "Want me to come with you? Just in case Caleb pesters you again."
Eliza smiled and declined, "There's no need. Don't worry. I've got some ability to protect myself now. Caleb can't touch me."
Hearing that, Mary nodded. "Alright, then just be careful and come back early."
"I will," Eliza replied, and she soon headed out.
Naturally, Renee didn't hesitate to follow behind Eliza.
The two climbed into a carriage, the same one Nolan had arranged for them earlier.
With just the two of them, there was more than enough space.
The carriage quickly made its way down the mountain.
As they passed a small hut, Eliza instinctively glanced over but didn't see the person she was subconsciously hoping to find.
Realizing what she was doing, she frowned and quickly looked away.
"Renee, go a bit faster. Let's get there and back early today," Eliza instructed.
"Alright! Then sit tight, Your Grace!" Renee responded.
The carriage soon rolled away from that place, and Eliza's slightly unsettled mood gradually calmed as she was carried farther from it.
An hour and a half later, their carriage arrived swiftly in Hasen City.
Eliza went straight up to the Marquis's estate and knocked on the front gate.
A figure soon emerged—it was the gatekeeper of the estate.
He asked, "Who is it? Who are you looking for?"
Eliza responded, "I'm here to see Lord Caleb and Lord Dale."
She was originally supposed to see Adeline first. But Eliza had no desire to meet her, so she asked directly for Dale and Caleb instead.
The gatekeeper leaned out for a look, and only then did he recognize her.
"Ah! It's Your Grace! This humble one greets Your Grace!" He quickly gave Eliza a respectful bow.
His attitude was far more courteous than before.
In the past, the servants of the Marquis's estate treated people based on Lord Caleb's attitude. Naturally, they hadn't been kind to Eliza. Still, given her former status as the Duke of Mowbay's legitimate daughter, they hadn't dared to treat her too badly either.
The gatekeeper said, "Please wait a moment, Your Grace. I'll go inform Lord Caleb and Lord Dale right away!"
"Go ahead," Eliza replied coolly.
The gatekeeper immediately turned and dashed inside.
Before long, someone from the estate came out.
Unfortunately, it was the last person Eliza wanted to see: Adeline.
"So it's Your Grace," Adeline stepped forward and gave a half-hearted curtsy, forcing a polite greeting despite the irritation on her face. "This subject greets Your Grace."
Eliza glanced at her without much expression and said bluntly, "I've come to return something to the Marquis's estate."
"What is it?" Adeline asked lazily, not bothering to hide her disinterest.
Eliza took a box from Renee's hands, opened it, and passed it over. “The betrothal token,” she said.
At those words, Adeline immediately stood straight and snatched the box from Eliza's hands, snapping, "You should've brought this back earlier! Why wait until now? If people didn't know better, they'd think Your Grace still had feelings for Caleb!"
But as soon as she looked inside, her eyes widened and she exclaimed, "What? Why is it cracked?"
She grabbed the emerald hairpin in a rage and exclaimed, "Do you even know what this is? This was supposed to be passed down to the next daughter-in-law of the Marquis's estate! Now that you've broken it, how is it supposed to be passed on?"
"Enough." Eliza shot her a cold look and spat, "Let's be clear—this hairpin wasn't broken by me. Your precious son smashed it with his own hands. If you don't believe me, go ask him yourself. Don't lose your mind in front of me."
