Dale sighed again in his heart.
"There's no need. I believe what Your Grace says," Dale said at last.
He let out a silent sigh, 'Such a good girl... shame our family's son doesn't deserve her.'
Concealing the turmoil in his heart, Dale turned to Caleb and ordered, "Well? Aren't you going to apologize to Her Grace?"
Smashing the engagement token during a formal betrothal was deeply offensive.
It clearly showed how much disdain the one who destroyed it held for the other party.
Eliza had likely endured a great deal of humiliation because of it.
Dale didn't hold back as he slapped Caleb on the back of the head so hard, it nearly sent the boy's soul flying.
Caleb clenched his teeth and said through gritted jaws, "S-sorry... Your Grace, please forgive me."
Eliza didn't spare him so much as a glance and outright ignored his apology.
She said, "That's all I have to say, Lord Dale. From this moment on, I don't want anyone outside bringing up the engagement between me and Lord Caleb again. I won't have my peace disturbed."
Eliza had come here today to put an end to the matter once and for all.
She had no interest in letting it drag on.
And if it did continue, she wouldn't have even a sliver of patience left.
Dale nodded repeatedly, "Of course, Your Grace. I give you my word. It won't happen again."
After that, Eliza finally turned and left the Marquis's estate.
As Caleb walked back inside, he looked over his shoulder every few steps.
His face was a mix of confusion and fury. A mix of emotions churned in his heart, and he couldn't even figure out what Eliza had just done to him.
He couldn't stop himself from looking back—again and again—staring at the departing carriage.
He had already stepped through the gate when, all of a sudden, Caleb halted and blurted out, "Father, I—I just remembered something I have to take care of! I'll be back later!"
He didn't even wait for a reply before bolting out the door.
"Stop right there!" Dale roared.
"Caleb?" Adeline cried.
Dale frowned while Adeline looked baffled.
But neither of them managed to stop Caleb.
They could only watch helplessly as their foolish son chased after her again.
Adeline, now full of worry, murmured, "Why does that boy still want to chase after Eliza? Hasn't he suffered enough from that little bit- girl?"
Her tone turned sour, and she nearly let something worse slip out.
Under Dale's cold, heavy gaze, she quickly corrected herself.
"Instead of wasting time worrying about him, maybe worry about yourself first," Dale snapped. "I was barely gone a moment, and you've already thrown my words to the wind again?"
With a growing sense of dread, Adeline listened as Dale's voice, cold as frost, began settling scores with her.
She tried to explain herself, "...No, it's not like that—please, listen to me…"
"Eliza? Eliza!"
"Wait up!"
"Eliza!"
Behind the carriage, Caleb was still chasing after her, shouting.
Renee peeked out the back, glanced at him, then turned to face her lady inside the carriage.
Eliza sat with her eyes closed and instructed, "Ignore him. Keep going. Lose him."
"Got it!" Renee grinned in understanding and cracked the reins.
The carriage immediately picked up speed, quickly leaving the pursuing Caleb far behind.
Just when Eliza thought that would be the end of it, she was proven wrong.
Barely a street later, Caleb somehow reappeared, and this time in a carriage of his own.
As he shouted, "Eliza, wait! Can we talk? Just give me a chance. I have something I want to say to you!
"Eliza! Can you not be so heartless?"
