"Hey, what's with that look on Caleb's face? It's really disgusting. Does he actually think you came here because you still have feelings for him?" Eliza hadn't noticed yet, but Diana spotted it first. She immediately felt nauseated, her face full of disdain.
Eliza had no desire to see Caleb in the first place. To avoid irritation, she even turned her head away.
Fortunately, she didn't look over, or she would have seen that as Caleb led Sophie to pay their respects, he kept glancing at Sophie with concern, then at Eliza, his eyes darting back and forth greedily.
Thanks to her veil, Sophie hadn't noticed Caleb's actions at first. But Caleb's frequent glances soon caught her attention and made her frown.
Sophie was already in a bad mood, and her anger was rising. She lowered her voice and said, "Caleb, what are you looking at? The ceremony has already started. Stand still, will you?"
"O-okay." Caleb turned back to Sophie, preparing to bow with her. But in his haste, he bumped into Sophie's hand, causing it to swell.
"Ouch," Sophie hissed, sucking in a breath through her teeth.
"Sophie?" Caleb, startled by his mistake, quickly took Sophie's hand and examined it. It was already red and swollen.
"I'm sorry, Sophie. It's all my fault. I wasn't paying attention just now. Does it still hurt? Let me blow on it for you," Caleb said.
"N-no, it doesn't hurt. I'm fine, Caleb. Don't worry about it," Sophie replied, maintaining her facade of gentleness and understanding, even though she was inwardly cursing Caleb.
'Does it hurt or not? Useless fool. You mess up even at a moment like this. How could you be this stupid?' she thought to herself.
But Sophie conveniently forgot that if Caleb weren't such a fool, he wouldn't have been so easily charmed by her words.
Sophie and Caleb's clumsy behavior infuriated Adeline. She suppressed her impatience, her expression turning slightly gloomy. "Enough, don't you see the guests are still waiting? Let's get this started."
Sophie took the opportunity to pull her hand away from Caleb's, forcing a smile and saying, "Madam Nevill is right. Caleb, please continue."
Adeline, however, deliberately made things difficult, her tone cold. "You, a mere concubine, are not the legitimate wife, and yet you dare to command Caleb. Also, your tone is far too harsh. You should remember to change that."
Although Adeline was following Dale's advice, she had no intention of showing Sophie any kindness in front of the guests.
After all, Sophie had caused Caleb's leg injury and ruined his reputation. Hearing this, Sophie stiffened.
Caleb, who had been preoccupied with Eliza, snapped back to reality and defended Sophie. "Mother, Sophie is so close to you. Why are you being so particular about these things?" This was almost a public humiliation of Sophie.
Adeline, however, had no interest in listening to his defense. She glared at Caleb and then looked at Sophie with displeasure. "The Marquis's estate is a place that values propriety. Some people lack both manners and education. Oh, yes, I remember now. Sophie was seemingly expelled from the Imperial Palace because she couldn't learn the rules, wasn't she?"
Sophie's near-marriage to the king as his first queen had been common knowledge throughout Hasen City. Her subsequent expulsion, and the reasons for it, were equally well-known.
By bringing up this past in such a public setting, Adeline might as well have slapped Sophie across the face.
Under her veil, Sophie was so angry she almost ground her teeth to dust. If it weren't for the need to avoid marrying that wretched scholar, Sophie would never have subjected herself to such humiliation at the Marquis's estate.
Initially, Adeline had ingratiated herself with Sophie, even hinting multiple times that she wanted Caleb to marry her. Now that Sophie had lost her adopted daughter status, Adeline dared to humiliate her so blatantly.
'The Stonor family is truly despicable, including my heartless father. But don't think this will make me back down. I've come this far, and I won't retreat,' Sophie thought to herself.
After enduring the humiliation and suppressing her anger, Sophie finally spoke. "Madam Nevill, you're right. I was out of line. I apologize. From now on, I will follow the rules of the Marquis's estate and take good care of you and Lord Dale."
'Just wait for the day I poison you both until you're writhing in agony,' Sophie thought inwardly.
Knowing full well that Sophie's words were insincere, Adeline had to let it go for now. After all, it was her precious son's wedding. Even if she was furious, she had to swallow her pride. There would be plenty of opportunities later to deal with this wretch.
"Alright, let's continue," Adeline huffed inwardly before the ceremony finally proceeded smoothly.
Eliza and Diana watched the whole scene with interest. Once it was over, Diana raised an eyebrow and asked, "Eliza, what do you think?"
Eliza smiled faintly. "It's done."
As soon as the ceremony ended, Caleb was eager to take Sophie back. Diana was about to speak when another voice beat her to it. "Wait, what? Mrs. Nevill, are you leaving already—"
"I have a gift here that I originally wanted to give to you first, but your carriage left too quickly, and I couldn't catch up. So I came to the party specially to deliver it." It was Isabelle's voice.
Diana whipped her head around to look at an inconspicuous corner, where a veiled woman was sitting at a table. Despite the veil, Diana recognized her instantly. "How could Isabelle be here?"
'She killed my people and still dares to show up openly?' Diana thought to herself.
During this time, Diana had been nursing her injuries while sending people to hunt for Isabelle. Her men had searched Hasen City high and low but couldn't find her. Diana never expected to see Isabelle here.
Seemingly sensing Diana's murderous glare, the veiled woman turned her head and smiled. "Oh, by the way, when I came in just now, I seemed to hear that Your Grace had also prepared a gift for Mrs. Nevill. Mrs. Nevill, don't you want to take a look before you leave?"
