"Renee, wait." Eliza's languid voice rang out, and Renee halted once more.
Eliza finally rose from her chair by the shore, taking a couple of steps forward and looking down at Sophie, who was trembling with fear in the water.
With a faint smile, Eliza said, "Very well, I'll give you a chance." She slowly pressed a pitch-black pill into Sophie's mouth, her voice gentle. "Anthony's house is in your possession, isn't it?"
Sophie was forced to swallow the pill, her eyes shaking. "W-what did you give me?"
"I dislike fools who pretend to be innocent. If you think what it is, then that's it," Eliza replied. Besides poison, what else could it be?
Sophie bit her lower lip tightly, her voice trembling. "It's true that it's in my possession, but the documents were taken to the Marquis's estate. You have to let me go back so I can bring them to you."
"There's no rush," Eliza said, extinguishing any hope Sophie might have had. "The pill's effects won't kick in for another three days. In the meantime, I have one more task for you."
"What is it?" Hearing this, Sophie felt an inexplicable sense of panic. Her intuition told her that whatever Eliza wanted her to do was definitely related to her father. She didn't want to anger him any further, but she had no choice.
"In two days, you're scheduled to visit home. When you go back, retrieve a ledger from your father's study for me. If you can do this, I'll not only give you the antidote, but I'll also help heal the scar on your face," Eliza said, her fingertip tracing the grotesque scar on Sophie's face, leaving a faint red mark.
"Three bottles of snow cream, how about that?" Eliza added.
Of course, it was more than enough. One bottle of snow cream could heal Sophie's scar, and three bottles could restore her face to its former state. Sophie, who had been afraid, couldn't help but swallow hard and waver.
She hesitated, looking up at the face that had made her envious since the first time she saw it when she entered the Duke's estate. Sophie gritted her teeth and made her decision. "Alright. I agree."
Caleb couldn't get her snow cream, which was why she was now being threatened by Eliza over a mere scar.
'But never mind, once I get the antidote and the snow cream, I'll settle all old and new scores with Eliza. By then, the one who'll be at the bottom will be Eliza, that bitch,' Sophie thought to herself.
After staring at Eliza's face for a while, Sophie finally averted her gaze. "If I get that ledger for you, you'll definitely give me the antidote and the snow cream, right?"
"Of course, you know that. As a nun, my word is my bond," Eliza said with a faint smile.
'Nun? Does a nun kidnap people in the middle of the night? Does she order killings? Does she threaten others with poison?' Sophie thought to herself. She didn't believe a word Eliza said.
But she had no choice. She had to trust her for now. Otherwise, Eliza wouldn't let her leave alive tonight. It was only now that Sophie finally learned her lesson and stopped opposing Eliza. "I've already agreed. Can you take me back now?"
She was freezing. If she didn't go back soon, she felt like she might freeze to death here before Eliza could even kill her. But to her surprise, Eliza wasn't done yet.
"The sky hasn't lightened yet. Why the rush to go back?" Eliza said with a smile. "Mrs. Nevill, there's still one thing you promised me during the day that you haven't completed."
Sophie frowned. "What did I promise you?" She didn't remember that.
Eliza raised an eyebrow. "Mrs. Nevill, have you forgotten? You still owe Lord Dylan 3,500 dollars. Otherwise, why do you think I had you brought here specifically?"
'This is clearly kidnapping. And you brought me here to kill me and threaten me,' Sophie thought indignantly.
Sophie was furious. When she looked around, she realized they were at the foot of Mount Westin, right behind Dylan's shabby little cabin. The stream she was standing in was the very ditch where she had thrown Dylan's coins.
Sophie was fuming inwardly, cursing with every breath. 'No wonder Eliza didn't seem upset when I said I had thrown away Dylan's money earlier. She had already planned this out from the beginning, waiting for me right here,' she wondered.
"The water is so deep; those coins might have already been washed away. How am I supposed to find them here?" Sophie complained.
Eliza sat back down on the chair, took a hand warmer from Tina with one hand, and rested the other on her forehead, speaking indifferently. "You threw the money. How you find it is your problem. But you'd better get started. If you can't find those coins before dawn, then our previous deal is pointless."
This meant Sophie would die here. Eliza wouldn't let her go.
Sophie shuddered, gritting her teeth as she endured the cold wind and icy water.
"Mrs. Nevill, get started," Renee said, finally releasing her and walking back to the shore. There was no need to supervise Sophie; if she made the slightest move, Tina would kill her on the spot.
"Renee, come warm yourself by the fire. Don't catch a cold," Eliza said gently, handing the hand warmer to Renee.
Sophie almost spat blood watching this scene. 'You throw me into the freezing stream, and you sit by the fire on the shore. And I'm supposed to stay in the water. Eliza is doing this on purpose,' she thought bitterly.
But Sophie didn't dare say a word. She looked at the stream beneath her and, with a resigned sigh, began to feel around in the water.
When she had thrown the coins earlier, she hadn't paid any attention, only remembering that she had tossed them into the stream. She had no idea where exactly they had landed.
Even if she had a vague idea, the coins could have been washed away by now, just as she had said. She had to search blindly, feeling around everywhere in the stream. The more carelessly she had thrown the coins, the more she regretted it now.
After searching in the freezing water for a full half-hour, Sophie finally found one string of coins—1,000 dollars. Heaven knew how thrilled she was when she found that first string of coins.
"I found it," Sophie exclaimed, almost in tears. She clutched the coins and hurried to the shore, eager to show Eliza.
But before she could get close, Tina stepped forward with a sword, blocking her way and taking the coins from her hand.
Eliza glanced at the coins indifferently and said coldly, "Okay, congratulations, Mrs. Nevill. You found the first one. There are still thirty-four more strings of coins to go. Keep looking."
In that moment, the smile on Sophie's face shattered.
