Just as Rafe had expected, no one in the Duke's estate had caught on to Eliza's ability to control venomous creatures.
The most Gabriel suspected was that Eliza might have picked up some medical and poison-related skills from Reverend Mary Mendoza.
This led him to mistakenly assume that Rafe had been sent back as Eliza's spy.
Gabriel, who always acted with his own interests at heart, was well aware of his calculating nature.
And because he saw Eliza as a mirror of himself, he was convinced that her decision to send Rafe back wasn't out of kindness.
Even if she had already achieved her goals, like reclaiming her family name, would Eliza really discard someone as useful as Rafe, a perfect pawn to use against the Duke's estate, so easily?
Gabriel didn't believe it.
Meanwhile, Rafe, who had already figured out what Gabriel was thinking, scoffed inwardly.
'And he calls himself my father? He doesn't even know what Eliza is capable of. What a fool.'
Then again, Rafe realized this might actually work in his favor.
'If I help Eliza take down the Duke's estate, she might reward me for it!'
Of course, Rafe had his own ambitions too.
With that thought, he decided to play along with Gabriel's assumptions.
With a dramatic *thud*, Rafe dropped to his knees, trembling all over. Bowing his head, he said, "I didn't expect you to see through me so quickly, Father! I'm so ashamed. Please forgive me! I only agreed because I wanted to come home!"
To make his act even more convincing, Rafe added a sob to his voice as he finished speaking.
It sounded like he had been forced into this situation.
"You're finally admitting it, huh?" Gabriel said with a knowing nod. "You're quite straightforward. Aren't you worried my rebellious daughter might deal with you for spilling the beans?"
Rafe feigned shock, his expression full of unease. "She is a nun, isn't she? How could a nun kill someone?"
Gabriel sneered, his tone dripping with mockery. "If you truly believe she's gentle and merciful, you'll end up dead by her hands sooner or later."
"By the way," Gabriel continued, narrowing his eyes, "since you came back from Woteria with her, have you seen or heard of a sickly young man named Anthony Stonor? He's your fourth brother."
Of course I've seen him! I was the one who personally sent that man off.' Rafe thought to himself, a flicker of amusement crossing his mind.
"I haven't seen him," Rafe replied, shaking his head with a mix of truth and lies. "After my sister found me, she locked me up. On the way back, the only people I saw were Black Flag soldiers. Even after arriving in Hasen City, I was taken straight to the Prince Regent's estate and kept under lock and key by His Highness."
Rafe smirked inwardly. There was nothing to worry about.
Even if Gabriel sent people to investigate, they wouldn't uncover much.
Anyone who knew his secrets was already locked up and awaiting execution.
And with the Black Flag personally guarding them, Gabriel wouldn't be able to extract any information from that side either.
As for Woteria, there was even less chance of finding anything there.
Every trace had been meticulously erased.
At this moment, although Gabriel harbored doubts about Rafe's words, he didn't take them too seriously.
After all, in his eyes, he was just a naive teenager. Trying to play tricks or outwit him was laughable.
No matter what this boy was hiding, Gabriel was confident that once his men returned from investigating Woteria, the truth would come to light.
