Jacqueline shot a discreet glare at the maid standing behind Eliza, then quickly bowed slightly. "It was a slip of the tongue on my part. I misspoke. I hope Your Grace can overlook my mistake and not hold it against me."
She added hastily, "Look, my clothes are soaked, and my hair is wet. I'm clearly in no condition to stay for the banquet. If there's nothing else, may I leave? It wouldn't look good if people heard I fell into the water here, right?"
As she spoke, a flicker of impatience and urgency flashed in her eyes.
Though Eliza appeared focused on sipping her coffee, her gaze never left Jacqueline.
She didn't miss that fleeting moment.
It seemed that there really was something going on with Jacqueline's incident of falling into the water.
Setting down her cup, Eliza silently stared at Jacqueline for a long moment.
Just as Jacqueline's patience was about to run out and she furrowed her brows to speak again, Eliza finally broke the silence.
And with just a few words, Jacqueline's face stiffened, and her confidence wavered.
"Why the rush, Miss Henderson? Since you fell into the water here at the Padilla estate, it's only right to investigate the cause thoroughly."
Eliza tilted her head and gave a calm order. "Renee, take some people and inspect the spot where Miss Henderson fell. Check every inch, both on the shore and underwater. Leave no trace unexamined, especially in the water."
Eliza's gaze sharpened as Jacqueline's face turned pale, a flicker of confidence glinting in her eyes.
A faint, icy smile played on her lips. "As the head of this family, I am quite curious to see what exactly is in the pond of our backyard that could make someone like Miss Henderson, who clearly knows how to swim, suddenly act like she's never been in water before."
Jacqueline's face turned bright red as she stammered, "How... how do you know I can swim?"
Before she could finish, she suddenly realized her mistake and slapped a hand over her mouth.
'Damn it! I just spilled the beans!'
Eliza's smile was cold and mocking. "I didn't know before, but now I do, thanks to you."
Jacqueline exploded in anger, shouting, "You conniving witch! How dare you trick me!"
The sharp sound of a slap rang out in the room.
Renee, who hadn't left yet, shook her hand slightly and fixed Jacqueline with an icy glare. "Miss Henderson, this is your final warning. Show some respect in front of Her Highness!"
Even Eliza was caught off guard by the sudden slap.
She hadn't expected Renee to improve so quickly.
She had to admit that having a personal aide who could act on her behalf was becoming a necessity.
Tina wasn't suited for this role. Her talents lay in staying hidden, striking only when the moment called for it.
Renee, however, seemed like the perfect candidate.
Under Malaki's guidance, she had already mastered all the social rules of Hasen City.
And with Tina's training, her combat skills advanced rapidly. Not only could she handle ordinary maids, but if Matthew came, she could take on two at once.
Eliza was thoroughly impressed. It was time to reconsider Renee's position.
Initially, she hadn't planned for Renee to become her personal aide. But Renee's hard work and impressive progress, combined with Eliza's new role as the Padilla family head, made it clear she needed someone she could trust completely.
So, today was the perfect day to make it official.
With her decision made, Eliza didn't rush. She gave Renee a meaningful look, and Renee immediately understood. She turned and led her team toward the backyard.
"Confess now and spare yourself, or wait for the truth to come out and lose all chances of reconciliation. Think carefully, Miss Henderson."
