"Your Grace, whatever are you implying? How could I dare to put anything improper in your coffee?" Sophie protested.
She couldn't help but feel suspicious, wondering, 'Did Eliza somehow notice the parasite eggs I slipped into her coffee?'
Eliza scoffed. "I never said it was something improper."
'Sophie confessed without being asked herself,' Eliza thought.
With Sophie's expression frozen stiff, Eliza remarked coolly, "Normally, when people make coffee, they'd put some milk or sugar in it, wouldn't they?"
Sophie let out a bitter laugh as she realized she'd been tricked.
Standing off to the side, Rafe also sighed in relief.
But the next moment, both Sophie and Rafe tensed up again because Eliza continued, "But then again, Sophie, you're hardly what I'd call 'ordinary'..."
Eliza picked up the coffee cup Rafe had left on the table after finishing his drink, twirled it between her fingers for a moment, then suddenly hurled it toward Sophie.
The cup shattered into pieces at Sophie's feet.
Eliza took the handkerchief Renee handed her to wipe her hands. In a cold, almost icy tone, Eliza said, "There's a blood feud between us. You wish you could tear me to pieces, and I wish I could crush you to ashes. With hatred like this, do you expect me to believe you wouldn't seize the chance to do something? Like slipping something lethal into my coffee?"
A tense, eerie silence instantly filled the hall.
Adeline and Dale watched the heated exchange in stunned silence.
And so was the poor Rafe, the only one who took the hardest hit.
After hesitating twice, Rafe gave up caring, thinking, 'Whatever, whether it's poison or parasites, Eliza can handle it. So what if I already drank it? It might even earn me some brownie points with Eliza.'
Feeling he wasn't losing out, Rafe obediently settled in to enjoy the show.
Sophie suddenly lowered her head and chuckled, then burst into laughter. By the end of her laughter, it became shrill and piercing.
She said, "You're right. Every damn word of it!"
Sophie stared at Eliza, seated in the seat of honor, her expression finally twisting into pure hatred. "There's a blood feud between us," she spat. "If it weren't for you, I never would have fallen this low!
"Lord Celeb's secondary wife? I am the daughter of the Duke of Mowbay. I should have been Celeb's primary wife. But I lost everything because of you. You even cost me my life.
"Given all this, why shouldn't I make my move against you?"
Sophie pointed at Eliza, her voice thick with venom. "You deserve to die by my hand. I'll make you suffer until you think death is a mercy. And when you're finally gone, I won't tear you to pieces, for I will swallow you alive, bite by bite.
"You know what? Ever since I came back, I've had the same dream every night. In it, I sink my teeth into your flesh, drink your blood dry, strip off your skin, and rip out your tendons. While you scream in misery, I devour you completely, leaving nothing behind.
"Every time I have that dream, I feel ecstasy. But when I wake up and find it was just a dream, and you're still alive, that's when absolute agony consumes me!"
Sophie clutched her chest, her expression caught between laughter and tears as she stared at Eliza with half-mad eyes. In a trembling voice, she said, "So, Eliza, won't you fulfill my wish? I've dreamed of this day every waking moment. Since we're blood sisters, and you've come right to me, why not let me devour you?"
What she just said was far more chilling than any threat to take Eliza's life.
Adeline and the others nearby stood frozen in terror, their faces drained of color.
They thought Sophie's methods against them were terrifying enough. But what she had in store for Eliza was downright horrifying.
It was as if a vengeful demon had crawled straight out of hell, not for a simple kill, but for pure, unadulterated revenge.
Devouring flesh, drinking blood, skinning alive, and cutting out tendons. If anyone else said such things, it might have just been hyperbole.
But as Adeline stared at Sophie's deranged face and bloodthirsty eyes, she knew this was no exaggeration.
She could feel that Sophie truly meant to consume Eliza alive.
Adeline couldn't help but wonder, 'Eliza... Isn't she terrified?'
With the question in mind, Adeline turned to look at Eliza again. But she froze when she saw Eliza's expression.
There was no fear, only a mask of icy indifference, and a glint of mocking disdain in her eyes.
"Don't you dare call Eliza your sister!" Just then, before Eliza could even get a word in, Rafe, her ever-loyal sidekick, standing on the other side, finally couldn't hold it in any longer.
The masked Rafe sneered at Sophie and spat, "You're just a bastard child. Eliza never acknowledged you, but you think you deserve to call yourself her sister? Eliza is a peerless beauty, graceful and virtuous, pure as driven snow, generous and kind, brilliant and quick-witted, eloquent, and a master of all arts."
Rafe rattled off his string of praises in one breath, then, seeing everyone's stunned faces, drew a sharp breath and snapped, "And you, shameless, hideous, greedy, vicious, morally bankrupt, scheming, two-faced, and downright wicked, think you have the nerve to call such an extraordinary woman your sister?"
Adeline, Dale, and the others were speechless, thinking that was just too much.
Eliza pinched the bridge of her nose and took a deep breath.
'God, I wish I could pretend I didn't know him,' she thought.
"You... You filthy servant. I'll cut you down!" Sophie finally snapped, raised her hand, and threw something toward Rafe.
Adeline gasped as she recognized it. "Watch out! That's a venomous snake."
She realized with a jolt, 'It's the very same deadly viper Sophie once used against me.'
If her husband hadn't taken the bite for her back then, she would have died from its venom.
Just as the viper bared its fangs to strike at Rafe, and Adeline could barely bring herself to watch, Rafe moved like lightning, one hand clamping down on the viper's neck, the other crushing its jaws shut. With a brutal wrench, he snapped its fangs clean off.
Rafe turned to Sophie and sneered, "Is that all you've got?"
