As soon as Mary gave her approval, Eliza eagerly took the packages and ran off to share them with her senior sisters.
By the time she returned, only half a package remained in her hands.
Eliza happily rushed back, but as soon as she saw Nolan, something suddenly struck her. "Oh no!"
She had forgotten to save some for Nolan.
Nolan immediately knew what she was thinking. He had planned to tell her that he did not care for sweets and that she should just eat them herself.
But as the words reached his lips, he suddenly changed his mind. Raising an eyebrow, he said, "What should we do? There's only this little bit left, and I haven't even had a single bite."
Eliza's embarrassment deepened.
The pastries were Nolan's gift, yet she had been so excited to share them with the other guys that she had completely forgotten to save any for Nolan.
Looking flustered, she awkwardly held out the half-filled package. "There's still some left. Would you like to have some, Your Highness?"
"Of course." Nolan watched her slightly flushed face as he reached out but he only took one piece. "But I'm not particularly fond of sweets. You should keep the rest for yourself."
Eliza blinked in surprise.
When she glanced up at Nolan's expression, realization struck. He had been teasing her just now.
But instead of getting upset, Eliza simply smiled and thanked him before taking a bite, holding the paper package in one hand while nibbling on a pastry with the other.
"I bought some medicinal herb seeds for you yesterday. There's a planting guide included. Your courtyard is too small, so if you want to grow them, go to the back mountain. I've had a plot cleared for you near the stream; it'll be easier to water them there," said Nolan.
Eliza was startled. "Didn't I tell you not to go through the trouble, Your Highness? Why did you still buy them?"
"It was just a small effort." Nolan's tone was casual.
'A small effort? He has even arranged for land to be cleared in the back mountain. It means a lot,' Elisa wondered.
Even someone as slow as Eliza could no longer ignore how differently Nolan was treating her.
The Prince Regent, one of the most powerful men in the palace, had so much free time that he was dropping by every few days just to bring Elisa things.
No, not every few days. Lately, it had been every single day.
And not only was he coming by, but he was also paying attention to her needs.
She had originally asked for medical books, and when he guessed her true intention, he helped her find the poison manual and even backed her up. Later, he brought her medicine for her injuries, and even now, he was sending her desserts and seeds, and sending people to cultivate land.
The more Eliza thought, the more something felt off.
But not wanting to overthink it, Eliza hesitated for a moment before tentatively asking, "Your Highness, is there something you need my help with?"
When Nolan saw the flicker of unease in her eyes, he couldn't help but laugh inwardly. "Indeed, there is something I need your help with, Serenity."
"What is it?" Eliza asked cautiously.
Nolan put on an embarrassed expression, which only made Eliza even more anxious. Then, he smiled and said, "Earlier, when you read the Bible for me, my condition eased a bit. But over time, my illness became harder to control. I wanted to ask if, from now on, could I come to you every day to listen to the scriptures?"
"Every day?" Eliza pulled at the corner of her mouth.
She thought Nolan must be joking. A disease wouldn't be cured just by listening to someone read the Bible.
"Maybe you should see a doctor? Or you could try the palace physician." She really couldn't be of much help to Nolan in this regard.
"I've seen a doctor. He said my physical ailment can be treated, but the illness of the heart is hard to cure." Nolan's gaze fixed on her. "I've killed too many, trapped in hell, with the groans of the dead constantly in my ears.
"You may not believe me, but it's only when you read the scriptures that I find even a moment of peace."
