I hadn't been in the isolation room long when the bell rang, signaling the end of the English exam.
None of my classmates left after finishing—instead, they all rushed to see me, led by my childhood friend, Emmet Barker.
Sweat poured down his face as he shouted at the proctors, "You've got this all wrong! Jessica would never cheat! She's the top student at No. 1 High School, a shoo-in for Glasgow—why would she risk everything now?"
The proctor watching over me sighed. "That boy really cares about you. He just finished his exam and came straight here to defend you."
I let out a bitter laugh. "Oh, really?"
Emmet and I had grown up together, though our families couldn't have been more different. But he never once looked down on me—he'd always been a true friend.
For years, I'd dreamed of getting into a top university, believing that was the only way I'd ever be good enough for him. But after today? That dream was dead.
Even the proctors were baffled. "Everyone says you were going to be the top scorer. Why throw it all away like this?"
I lifted my head, meeting their eyes, and spoke slowly, deliberately. "Because if I didn't, I'd die."
The proctor flinched at my words, but I stayed perfectly calm, even letting a faint smile touch my lips—as if that chilling statement had come from someone else entirely.
Soon, my homeroom teacher stormed in. She slammed her hands on the windowsill, her face twisted in fury. "Jessica, have you lost your mind? The college entrance exam decides your entire future! Why would you throw it away by cheating?"
She jabbed a finger at me. "Your parents are farmers—they break their backs day and night just to pay your tuition! How could you betray them like this?"
At the mention of my parents, I bit my lip and looked down.
Everyone assumed it was shame. Guilt. Proof that I'd cheated.
But I knew the truth—the only way I'd ever make it to Glasgow was by turning myself in.
Then the principal arrived, and with him came Ms. Travis from Glasgow's admissions office.
The moment Ms. Travis saw me—handcuffed, sitting in that chair—her face went pale. "Jessica… you were already admitted through the competition program. Why were you even in the exam hall, let alone cheating?"
Silence.
Emmet's voice cracked. "You… you were already in?"
The principal and my homeroom teacher whirled toward Ms. Travis, demanding confirmation.
She nodded frantically. "I'm not mistaken! Jessica's already accepted into Glasgow's Physics Department. The acceptance letter is on its way!"
Now, the confusion deepened.
If I was already in, why would I cheat?
My homeroom teacher smacked her thigh. "I get it now! Someone framed her! Jessica, tell us the truth—did someone plant that cheat sheet on you?"
The principal jumped in. "That's right! Just say the word, and we'll investigate!"
Every eye in the room locked onto me, desperate for me to deny it. If I did, they'd fight for me.
Instead, I stared back, blank.
"I cheated. The cheat sheet was mine."
