His grand gesture moved the crowd, but left me completely cold.
Mr. Bass fixed me with a stern look. "Your case is highly unusual—and serious. We're taking you to the provincial office to handle it."
I smiled, genuine relief in my voice. "Perfect."
His eyebrows shot up. "You haven't actually studied yourself stupid, have you?"
I shook my head. "No."
Once we were well beyond town limits, I exhaled and turned to him. "Get your recording equipment ready. I'm ready to tell the truth."
His eyes widened, then narrowed, a spark of excitement in his voice. "Jessica, finally! Start from the beginning—how did you get those exam answers?"
"I stole them." Three words, and the car went dead silent.
Mr. Bass slammed his hand against the seat. "Cut the lies! The Examination Office confirmed there was no leak!"
"I'm telling the truth. Believe me or not, that's your call. But you can probably guess where things went wrong, right?"
A long pause. Then, realization flashed across his face. "I see what you're saying. I need to make a call—now."
Thank God he was sharp. I let out the breath I'd been holding and waited.
When he returned, his voice was tight. "I've sent a team to your town's exam office. If there's anything there, we'll know soon."
The car rolled on toward the capital—until a violent jolt rocked us from behind.
The driver cursed. "We just got rear-ended." A crash at a time like this? Way too convenient.
Mr. Bass stepped out to inspect the damage. "Fuel's leaking. We need another car."
We all climbed out, stranded on the roadside. The driver argued with the other driver—a man in a hat, face half-hidden. But that glimpse of his jawline sent ice through my veins.
Him.
Panic clawed at my throat. I turned to the officer beside me. "I need to use the restroom."
Out here in the middle of nowhere, she pointed to the bushes. "Make it quick."
I crouched down—then heard footsteps.
Emmet. He grabbed my wrist, yanking me up. "Let's go."
I planted my feet, fingers clawing at the weeds. "No."
His voice turned urgent. "We followed your car for miles. We had to crash it to get you out. Your dad's still waiting for surgery—if you need the money, move."
"I'm not running. You want me to live as a fugitive?"
His face darkened. "Jessica, don't play dumb. You think leaving town means you're safe? The Barkers have eyes everywhere. This is your last chance—don't waste it."
The mask was off. No more concerned friend—just a predator shoving me toward the edge.
But this time, I wouldn't fall. I screamed, "Help!"
Officers came running. Emmet released me with a snarl. "You're signing your own death warrant. Don't say I didn't warn you."
Me? A Scapegoat? Not anymore.
