"When will you return?" Lylah asked as she watched the soldiers help Lucas pack for his travel.
"A day before the full moon," he replied, his voice clipped.
"That's my birthday," Lylah shrugged, and Lucas glanced at her. "The day before the full moon. I'll turn eighteen and finally get my wolf," she added with a smile.
"That's nice, little wolf," he said, his smile tugging gently as he ruffled her hair. "I only hope your wolf won't be as stubborn as you."
Lylah chuckled as he withdrew his hand, her heart fluttering whenever Lucas did that.
She watched him climb onto his horse.
"Isn't your Lycan form faster than a horse?" Lylah tilted her head, curious.
The smile on Lucas' face widened with amusement. "Take care, little wolf, and practice everything I taught you."
Lylah nodded and watched him leave, along with Falcon and a Lycan warrior.
A thud snapped Lylah from her thoughts of the Grand Lord. She looked up and found the same young males who had tried to bully her that fateful day.
"What's up, misfit?" the blond one spat, while the other, with brown hair, smirked down at her.
Lylah simply shifted her gaze back to her work, making them feel as though they were talking to the air.
"Look at her, acting all mighty," the blond sneered. "You know the Grand Lord left the Citadel, don't you? There's no knight in shining armor to save your ass now."
Still, no response.
The brown-haired boy wrinkled his nose and stepped forward to grab Lylah's shoulder, but before he could touch her, she swiftly moved from her spot. The young male caught nothing but air, nearly losing his balance.
"Don't you two fools have something better to do than pick on a girl younger than you?" she said, deadpan.
Both young males glanced at each other, eyes flashing with anger.
"You little bitch-"
Letting out a soft chuckle, the blond one surged forward to grab her, barely missing the bun of her hair. Lylah dodged swiftly, grabbing his hand and swinging him over her shoulder, slamming him to the floor.
When the brown-haired one tried to attack her too, Lylah punched him in the face. Her legs tensed against the ground as she forced herself to jump, then landed a swift kick to his skull, sending him flipping over and crashing to the floor with a loud thud.
She did it in a span of seconds-her movements incredibly fast.
Lylah felt another presence. Her eyes moved to the entrance and found the Head Warrior standing there, staring.
His gaze swept over the groaning young males, who instantly scrambled to their feet, but his eyes were fixed only on Lylah.
As he approached with steady steps, Lylah gave him a slight bow, a respectful glint in her eyes.
But as she straightened up, a daring look grazed her features. She noticed the slight furrow of his thick brow, the faint wrinkles around his eyes.
Without a word, she walked away. After all, someday, she would spar with this same brute of a male who had forbidden her from training.
"Lylah!"
Lylah halted in the small corridor leading to her room and turned to see Brigid approaching. A small, unfamiliar ache settled within her heart for some unknown reason.
"Hey," Brigid said, draping an arm around her neck. "I've been looking for you."
"Hm," Lylah's lips stretched into a light smile.
"Are you done with today's work? How about we do something fun?"
"No, I'm good. I just want to rest for now."
Brigid nodded in understanding.
"So... have you talked to him? What did he say?"
Lylah, understanding what she meant, shook her head. "No. I didn't get the chance to. Lord Lucas has been busy since the ceremony and left the Citadel this morning for something urgent."
Brigid hummed in response. "Do you know when he'll be back?"
"The day before the full moon."
"That's next week-and ah... that's your birthday," Brigid chuckled. "Well, I've been thinking of doing something to celebrate that day with you. Is there anything you'd like to do? Something fun? I, Brigid Hales, will make it happen."
Lylah's mood lightened a bit at the change of topic. "Nothing... really. I just can't wait to have my wolf so I can officially become a warrior."
"It's painful, you know."
Lylah gave her a look.
"Having your wolf for the first time," Brigid explained. "Your bones shifting, skin tearing-and that terrifying growl will make your head reel with pain. It's like... three times more painful than having sex for the first time."
Lylah paused mid-step, her eyes wide. "That painful?"
"Relax," Brigid said with a soft laugh. "It's magical. You'll feel like a new person. Intense, yes-but interesting. It only lasts a while, and after a few more shifts, it becomes easier."
With that, Brigid's bones cracked as she began to shift into her wolf. Lylah's face brightened at the sight. It was indeed magical-watching the fur seep out, hearing the low guttural growl as the transformation completed, the claws scraping the ground.
The smile on Lylah's face turned into a grin as she stared at the wolf, which shook its body after the full transformation.
"I must say, Brigid. Your wolf is really cute."
Almost immediately, Brigid began to shift back-her fangs, claws, and fur receding as her human form returned.
Drawing in deep breaths, Brigid raised a brow. "Cute, you say?"
Lylah shrugged, a soft, beautiful laugh escaping her lips. "What's her name?"
"Her name is Thalia," she replied, drawing in another breath as she straightened up. "She's fierce-and playful when she wants to be. Apparently, she likes you and can't wait to run with you in the woods."
"Thalia," Lylah echoed in a whisper. "She has a nice name. I wonder what my wolf's name will be."
"She'll tell you. On that day... when the pain ends and the dust settles, she'll speak, and you'll know. I'm sure she'll be just as stubborn and bold as you are," Brigid said, tilting her head gently.
Though Arianna had explained everything to her, Lylah hadn't been this interested until now. Hearing it again, she wished her birthday would come sooner.
She couldn't wait to meet her wolf.
