"Happy Birthday, Lylah Greystone."
Lylah had heard this from many-maids and even some of the warriors who never spoke to her, from Brigid who teased her, but she never thought she'd actually be here, hearing the King himself wish her.
Not only that, he had allowed her to dine with him.
Many beats passed before she finally regained her senses.
She stood and bowed fully, her head almost touching her knees. "Thank you, Your Majesty!"
Arianna pressed her lips together, suppressing her laughter and giving Duncan an appreciative look.
Lylah sat back, leaning close to Arianna and whispered, the excitement clear in her voice. "The Grand King of the realm just wished me 'Happy birthday.' It feels like a dream."
"I know, right?" Arianna whispered back, and they both straightened their spines, facing their respective meals.
"Is there anything you want for your birthday, Lylah Greystone?"
Lylah's heart skipped a beat. There was a way the king's voice flowed through the air, carrying power and authority. Quite bone-chilling, yet calm. And those eyes were hard to look at.
No wonder many claimed they shivered, not daring to meet his gaze whenever he passed.
"I-I don't have anything, Your Grace. I haven't thought of anything."
"Hm." Duncan glanced away momentarily to think for a second. "Lucas told me the head warrior refused to let you train with other warriors. I can help you send a message."
Definitely, that would help her.
"That is very kind of you, Your Majesty, but I'd love to earn it myself. The head warrior has his reasons, and I do want to respect that."
Duncan nodded slightly, a trace of impression in his eyes. "I can see why Beta Lucas decided to train you himself."
Lylah grinned from ear to ear and glanced at her sister, who gave her a warm smile.
After they were done eating, King Duncan pressed a gentle kiss against Arianna's lips before leaving for work.
"The king is incredible," Lylah spoke as they walked through the narrow hall that led to the yard.
"Indeed, he is."
Lylah took a deep breath. "It makes me wonder how it feels to be connected to someone, but nothing will change I, Lylah Greystone's mind."
Arianna let out a soft laugh. "Mating is not so bad, Lylah. It leads you to the right person no matter what... you just have to trust fate."
"Trust fate?" Lylah echoed in a whisper. "I don't think I can do that. Mother and father's love was beautiful, but it hurt them. It hurts in the end."
Arianna met her gaze. "You shouldn't think that way."
"I'm scared, Aria." Lylah turned fully to face her. "Lately, I've been having this dream. Terrifying. Disturbing. Saddening. I don't remember it when I wake up, but every time I do..." She paused and gauged Arianna's face. "I think of you."
Arianna exhaled, drawing Lylah close for a hug. "Listen very carefully, Lylah." Her voice was sweet and calm. "I'll always be by your side. Always."
Lylah hugged her back, and they stayed that way for a while before breaking the hug.
"I feel anxious about having my wolf today," Lylah said, walking to stand by the railing to watch the servants working in the yard. "It could be any moment now. You'd better stay close; I don't want to bear the pain alone. Brigid said it's going to hurt like hell."
Arianna stood beside her. "It'll only take a minute of pain."
"Hmp," Lylah sighed. "You missed Lily?"
A shadow fell over Arianna's features, old memories dawning upon her. "I do. Very much."
"Will she come back?"
"I don't know. She is no longer in me," Arianna muttered under her breath.
•••••••
The sisters chatted almost all day, spending enough time together. Arianna gifted Lylah a training book-the warrior discipline. Lylah thanked her wholeheartedly, promising to practice all of it.
When the night drew near, Lylah decided to train. She needed to hone her skills before Lord Lucas returned, though she promised to visit Arianna at night and spend the night with her.
After all, her wolf could come anytime soon.
Heading back, Arianna decided to wait for the king in the garden. It didn't take long before the king arrived.
Her face lit up at the sight of him.
As usual, Duncan leaned down and kissed her lips gently, making her melt in his embrace before asking how her day went.
Before Arianna could reply, Falcon's voice cut through the air.
"Your Grace! A message from Lord Lucas, sent by a crow."
The soldier quickened his step, causing Duncan's brow to arch slightly. He had been expecting Lucas' return, and hearing that Lucas had sent word ahead of his return suggested that something serious had happened.
Duncan took the small scroll and unrolled it with swift movement.
Slowly, as Duncan read each word, his aura and expression shifted. The arch of his brow deepened, settling on one particular word.
Worry settled on Arianna. Was Lord Lucas alright?
Duncan slowly lowered the scroll and momentarily glanced at Arianna, his jaw tensed. He then returned it to Falcon and ordered in an icy voice, "Bring me Selene, this instant."
Falcon immediately left, while Arianna turned her attention to Duncan, feeling unsettled.
"Dun? What's going on?"
No response. Instead, Duncan began to leave, and Arianna instantly followed.
"Dun?"
Duncan paused, not at Arianna's call, but at the sight of Falcon leading Selene toward him.
The head maid was slightly confused as she hastened her steps toward the king, but as she felt the dangerous aura, her confusion shifted to worry and fear.
She met Arianna's gaze, who gave her a look that showed she had no idea what had caused the sudden change.
"Kneel," Duncan growled, and Arianna's heart sank to her feet.
Selene immediately obeyed, her knees dropping to the marble floor, her breath ragged.
Duncan's fingers reached out without hesitation-swift, deadly. He drew Falcon's sword clean from its sheath, the sharp metal slicing the silence as it hissed through the air, heading toward Selene.
Selene's eyes widened, her body tensing as the tip of the blade kissed her neck-cold and unyielding. Arianna gasped, but the King didn't glance her way.
"I'll ask you one question, Selene," Duncan's voice was deadly. "You already know what will happen if you dare lie."
Selene hissed as the sharp edge drew a small drop of blood from her skin. Her entire body tensed under the king's thick, hard gaze.
"Tell me..." His voice grew even more dangerous. "Why the hell was an Ouroboros the one leading the rogue assault in the Moon Realm?"
