Arianna tensed at the king's words; her gaze met Selene's, who trembled with a blade ready to snap her neck.
The rogue leader-an Ouroboros?
How could it be?
Her fists clenched-if Selene knew about this, she wouldn't forgive her for deceiving her all this time.
"I... I have no idea about it, Your Grace," she breathed, her voice slightly trembling. "I swear on my life. I knew nothing about this."
The tension in the air remained as the king stayed quiet and still.
Arianna prayed silently under her breath that it wouldn't lead to bloodshed.
Selene gasped lightly when the blade was withdrawn from her neck. Arianna also breathed out in relief, but it was just momentary as realization and concern hit her.
"You understand your place, Selene. You understand the reason why you still have your head," Duncan's eyes darkened. "Do. You. Not?"
Selene, whose head was lowered, replied, "Yes, Your Majesty. Thank you for sparing my life."
"Once the prisoner arrives, you must get every detail from him. Once that happens, we'll continue the discussion about your goddess's abode."
Selene tensed; even the hissing sound of Falcon's sword sliding back into its sheath didn't ease the hard knot in her stomach.
"Y-yes, Your Grace."
Duncan then faced Arianna; his gaze softened, though a storm still brewed behind them.
"Head back to your chamber, Ari, and rest," he muttered and began to leave while Falcon waited to lead her back.
She looked back at Selene. "We'll talk tomorrow."
The head maid nodded gently as Arianna left.

She waited.
Each second, minute, and hour that passed felt the same. Nothing was happening.
No changes. No roar. No shifting. No wolf.
What was happening?
Lylah drew in a shaky breath, watching some warriors talking under a shade. Their laughter and chatter traveled through the air while she sat on the rooftop, watching them with a heavy heart.
"Lady Lylah?"
Lylah glanced down at the young maid who had called her; she seemed to be out of breath from searching.
"You're being called to the Sacred Moon Wing. Lady Arianna has been searching for you."
Lylah exhaled, the wind blowing strands of her hair across her face.
"What time is it?" she asked.
"It's past midnight, miss," the maid replied politely.
Past midnight-it took a moment for those words to settle. Her wolf hadn't come.
She bit the inside of her cheek, suppressing the tears that burned in her eyes.
The maid waited as Lylah climbed down. Sighing, she followed her to the Sacred Moon Wing with slow, dragging steps and her head lowered.
The Grand Lord wasn't back yet-maybe tomorrow. He'd be disappointed; that much she was sure of.
Here she was, thinking he'd go to meet the head warrior and make it known she had passed the first requirement, but...
Lylah hadn't realized they had reached the Sacred Moon Wing until Arianna's voice broke her train of thought.
"Lylah?"
She met her sister's worried gaze and looked away, her voice quiet. "It didn't come. I have no wolf, and it's past midnight."
"Hey, that's alright. Not everyone receives their wolf on their eighteenth birthday," Arianna replied, but Lylah said nothing, only staring at the small stone as though it were the wolf that refused to show up.
"It's rare, but it happens. It will come-surely."
Lylah finally looked at her. "Why does it have to be delayed? Why couldn't it be normal, like how yours showed up when you turned eighteen?"
Arianna crossed the distance and held her hands with a reassuring smile.
"You know, I heard those who receive their wolves late have a high chance of having a strong, special one when it finally comes."
"Really?" Her eyes widened, but then her brows furrowed. "Wait, you're not just saying that to make me feel better, are you?"
Arianna shook her head. "Of course not. I read a lot of books, remember? I came across that part. Having a wolf late might mean something special." She raised her hand to cup one side of Lylah's cheek. "You're going to have it soon. You just need to be patient."
Lylah's nerves eased a little.
"But for how long?" Lylah asked, worried. "Lord Lucas will return anytime soon. He'll be disappointed. And how am I supposed to beat the head warrior if I don't have a wolf?"
"With that determination, precision, and stubborn mind of yours, there's nothing you can't do," Arianna's voice was soft and assuring. "And as for the Grand Lord, I'm sure you'll be fine with him. He won't mind."
Lylah let out a huge breath of relief. "I knew I should've come to you. You always find a way to make me feel better. Thank you, sis."
Arianna gave her a warm smile. "My pleasure."
Lylah mirrored her smile. "I should spend the night in your chamber."
Her smile faded, replaced by concern. Arianna only said such things whenever something went wrong.
"Oh... it's not what you think. I simply don't want you to spend the night alone," Arianna explained, and she understood.
"I don't want to be alone either. I might drown in thoughts about my wolf. I definitely want to spend the night in your chamber."
With that, the two walked away, hand in hand.

{NEXT MORNING}
"He has returned,"
Brigid said to Hilda as she stepped into her chamber and sat down to remove her boots.
"Who? The Grand Lord?"
"No." Brigid let out a sigh. "My stalker."
"Alpha Toran," Hilda smirked, catching the hint.
Brigid hummed in reply, recalling how their eyes met after he dismounted his horse-the stupid smirk on his face that she longed to slap off.
"I think the Alpha likes you," Hilda shrugged, twirling a strand of her hair.
"Like me?" Brigid shook her head. "That man is the most cunning bastard alive. He's the King's ex-mistress's brother and still lurks around the palace. He definitely has something up his sleeve. He's a beast hunting for prey."
Hilda shrugged again. "Isn't that your kind of man? You always like villains whenever we read novels."
"That's novels, Hilda. This is real. That asshole killed a slave for no reason." Brigid recalled how Arianna honored the slave, Nadia, by burying her body and laying flowers. The heartbreaking look on Arianna's face made Brigid seethe with anger. "He's the worst. And besides, my heart belongs to none other than the Grand Lord."
Hilda huffed, then sat up and leaned forward, her voice hushed. "I might have a way for you to win Lord Lucas's heart."
Brigid's interest sparked; she shifted, turning fully to Hilda. "Well, start talking."
Hilda's smile broadened. "Tonight is the full moon-a night of blood or sex, especially for the Lycans." She tucked a loose stran
d of Brigid's hair behind her ear, her voice low and teasing. "A night you shall have him. And I'm going to teach you just what to do."
