“She’s healing—faster than usual,” the healer said to Arianna.
“What do you mean?”
“Her wolf is starting to manifest. Her broken bones are healing quicker than they should. It’s not quite the speed of a fully awakened wolf, but there are signs her wolf is helping.” The healer smiled. “It’s rare. She has a strong one coming. She should be completely fine in a week or two.”
Arianna glanced at the unconscious Lylah, who hadn’t stirred since yesterday. She hadn’t left her side once. Lylah’s face was still pale, but the bruises were fading.
“So… her wolf really is special,” she murmured, warmth flooding her chest. Lylah would be thrilled if she heard that.
“When wolves come in late, some have to force it out through pain. Their wolves can be dull at first, but with time, they fully develop. Lylah wouldn’t be healing this way if her wolf hadn’t stepped in.”
Arianna nodded. “Thank you—”
“What do you mean… my wolf will develop soon?”
Arianna’s head snapped to Lylah, stunned by her voice. She was awake.
“Lylah,” she breathed, rushing to her side.
“Hey, Aria.” Lylah gave her a weak smile.
Arianna took her hand and kissed the back of it. “You scared the life out of me,” she croaked.
“I’m sorry,” Lylah said softly. “I didn’t have a choice.”
Arianna nodded. “I know. I understand.”
“How long was I out?” Lylah asked.
“A whole day.”
“That’s a lot,” she muttered.
The healer gave them a gentle smile, then quietly excused herself and left the room.
“Hm... so you're the talk of every corner now. I'm proud of you, sis,” Arianna whispered, ruffling Lylah’s hair. “The head warrior stepped down from his position this morning.”
“Huh?” Lylah’s smile dropped. “Why?”
“He said he mishandled the warriors and admitted to poor judgment—especially in recognizing people who were meant for more. People like you deserve a chance before being judged. Lord Lucas will make you an official warrior once you’ve recovered.”
Lylah grinned from ear to ear. “That’s great to hear. I did it.”
“Yes, you did.”
After spending a long time together, the sky outside began to darken. Arianna would never get tired of being around her little sister, who was practically glowing with excitement over her wolf finally developing. Soon, she’d get to meet it.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway, followed by a guard’s voice announcing the arrival of the Beta.
Lucas entered before the guard even finished speaking, his eyes immediately finding Lylah. There was a flicker of worry in his gaze, though he tried to hide it.
Arianna had Lylah’s head on her lap, and both went quiet as he walked in.
“King Duncan asked for you,” Lucas said to Arianna after exchanging greetings.
Arianna pressed her lips together. She hadn’t seen Duncan since the match yesterday. She missed him—but didn’t want to leave Lylah’s side.
“Go on, Aria,” Lylah said softly.
“Are you sure?” Arianna asked, scanning her face for any sign of discomfort.
Lylah nodded. “You’ve been with me since yesterday. I’m fine now. You shouldn’t keep the King waiting. Besides, you clearly want to see him—I can see it in your eyes.”
“Shh,” Arianna hushed, and they both chuckled. She kissed Lylah’s forehead gently.
“I’ll be back soon, okay?” she promised before leaving her sister in the care of the Grand Lord.
A quiet pause settled between them until Lylah smirked.
“Is the Grand Lord speechless about my performance yesterday?”
Lucas shook his head. “You’re the most rebellious little wolf I’ve ever met.”
“I’m the only little wolf you’ve met. Is there another? Because if so, I’m getting jealous.”
Lucas snorted, stepping further into the room and sitting at the edge of her bed, his eyes locking onto hers. His voice quiet. “How are you feeling?”
“Better. The healer said my wolf is developing—it could come anytime now,” she said, and he nodded as though he already knew.
“Can you sit now? Or is your spine still broken?”
Lylah pushed herself up, resting her head gently on the headboard. Her dark hair spilled over her shoulders.
“Not for too long,” she whispered, her lips tugging into a small smile. Her heart pounded at the realization that it was just her and the Grand Lord alone in her room.
Lucas let out a sigh, still watching her. Usually, he would’ve looked away by now—but this time, his eyes lingered on every bruise.
“You heard about the head warrior?” he asked.
“He resigned,” she replied quietly. “Did I make you proud?”
“Can’t you tell?” Lucas said. “Honestly, I didn’t expect you to pull it off—especially that final stunt. It was dangerous.” He paused, then sighed. “You could’ve been killed, Lylah.”
He doesn't sound angry, but concerned.
“My Lord better get used to it. I’m not planning on stopping. Dangerous stunts are in my blood. Same with my sister.”
Lucas gave a small nod. “The Greystone bloodline... remarkable.”
Lylah slipped her feet to the ground and inched closer to him. He raised a brow.
“You said you couldn’t sit for long. Don’t strain yourself.”
“I’m getting stronger.”
“I’ll be leaving soon,” he said.
“Stay a bit longer. You already chased my sister away.”
“The King summoned her,” he replied.
“Did he?” she teased, arching a brow.
Lucas scoffed. “He couldn’t concentrate on his work. Kept staring at her hairpin, mumbling about when she’d come to see him. I asked if he wanted me to send for her, but he refused. Said she should spend enough time with you. Honestly, if I hadn’t send her to him myself, he might’ve come to carry her out of here.”
Lylah chuckled. That was adorable.
“The King loves her, doesn’t he?”
“It’s obvious,” Lucas muttered, his deep voice vibrating through the air. "It's nice to see him happy. I hope things remains that way."
A beat of silence passed.
“Have you ever been in love, my Lord?” she asked, though she had no idea why that question slipped into her mind. She was just curious—perhaps more curious if Lord Lucas had his heart for another.
A shadow fell over Lucas’s face, and Lylah thought she might have upset him.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to butt in.”
She lowered her gaze to the floor, biting her lower lip.
“I have been in love.”
She looked up, shocked that he had answered.
“But not anymore, I guess,” he said, eyes locked with hers. “Have you?” he whispered.
Lylah swallowed, biting her lower lip harder. She couldn’t believe she was having this conversation with Beta Lucas right now, especially when, two days ago, he had flashed in her mind when her sister asked if she had someone she wish to be with.
The reason—she had no fucking idea.
Even at this moment, her heart was pounding so fast in her ears, breath uneven as she took in the handsome male before her.
Lylah! Fucking stop… no crazy feelings, remember?
“Lylah?” Lucas muttered, but Lylah didn’t see the furrow in his brows. Her gaze was on his lips, slightly parted, and strangely, she couldn’t tear her gaze away.
He said something else, but she didn’t hear any of it.
Before she could stop herself, she blurted out,
“Can I... kiss you?”
