The dark night was beautiful. The half moon shone bright with thousands of stars shimmering around it.
Trees danced to the cool breeze that swept through the forest.
Selene sat on one of the large trees, gazing at the sky, deep in thought. Her hold tightened on the scroll in her hands.
“Should I deliver this?” she mumbled to herself. This was the fifth time she had asked herself that and still couldn’t come to a conclusion.
She should wait until Arianna becomes Queen, but she needed her people to know that there is hope—that they should hang on.
Eryndor, who was seated beneath, screeched, earning Selene’s attention.
“I know, Eryndor, but that’s our job.”
Eryndor screeched again.
“I should wait, huh?” Selene sighed, placing her gaze back on the scroll. “We don’t know if this is truly going to work. If it doesn’t, it will only mean we gave them false hope—and they held on for nothing.” A pause. “Their spirits will hate me if that happens. But then—”
Selene clenched the scroll in her hold. “What if they’ve already lost all hope? What if they’re all wiped out before we can reach the solution? What if things go wrong? What if Drakora... fuck.”
Eryndor rose to its feet, and as it peeked its head up, Selene reached out to caress its beak. Its eyes shut, screeching softly.
Selene let out a soft laugh at Eryndor’s wordless comfort. “Thank you, sweetheart,” she sighed. “I better go back to the palace before they notice my absence.”
She got down with the help of Eryndor, then pulled the lever to open the cave and signaled her creature to go back in.
Eryndor brushed his tongue on her cheek one last time before disappearing inside. After shutting the cave, Selene glanced up at the sky once more.
“I hope my lady is doing alright,” she whispered, smiling at the thought of Arianna.
••••••••
“Lylah,”
Brigid called in a whisper, tapping Lylah’s cheek lightly.
The girl muttered incoherent words, her eyes roaming aimlessly as if she were drunk.
“The drug worked,” Brigid said, glancing at Hilda, who rested her back against the wall, arms folded.
“Sure it does. By the time she wakes up, she won't remember anything,” Hilda smirked.
Brigid had actually drugged the cup Lylah used, not the drink. She knew Lylah had been suspecting her and needed to act fast and smart.
Lylah, just as she had thought, took the fall.
“Go ahead and ask her whatever. Her mind is clouded; she'll spill anything out,” Hilda said, and Brigid took a deep breath, slightly feeling terrible about what she was about to do.
But she didn't want Lylah around anymore. She wanted her out of the Citadel. Toran claimed Lylah had a deep secret that would make the Grand Lord hate her and would trigger Lylah being thrown out. She was curious to know.
“Tell me your deepest secret, Lylah,” Brigid asked.
Lylah smiled like a drunk. Her voice slurred, eyes hooded as she spoke.
“Secret…” she drawled.
"Yes, secret. Tell me everything without leaving a word."
“My secret… is… I might be in love… in love with the Grand Lord… crazy, right? I feel... so goood... around him... haha” Lylah laughed, her chest vibrating. “I… can't believe I, of all people… will get this stupid feeling… don't tell my Lord… alright?”
Brigid scowled. That was no deep secret. That was not going to lead Lylah out of the Citadel.
The Grand Lord seemed to care about Lylah; he wouldn't mind if she had feelings for him. Though it was a shock that Lylah harbored such feelings.
“Do you think this is working? The information is useless. Don't tell me I went through all that just to get this,” Brigid snapped at Hilda.
“Relax, Brigid. Lylah has no wolf, so it's very effective on her body,” Hilda straightened up and sighed. “Wait. Let me try,” she said, and Brigid stepped aside for her.
“Hello, Lylah,” Hilda crouched beside the girl laid on the floor.
“I'd like to know something about Arianna.”
Brigid's eyes narrowed. “Wait, Hey, W-what are you saying?”
The door opened and a brute guard stepped in, making Brigid's eyes go wide. The guard was the head guard of Valkyrie, one with a missing wrist.
“What are you—”
The guard grabbed her and placed a knife on her neck. The sharp, cold metal blade kissed her skin.
“Make a sound, and I'll slash your neck,” he warned.
Brigid’s eyes widened further, fixing on Hilda, who smirked at her.
“What the hell is going on, Hilda? Explain to me!!” Brigid shouted, but the guard behind her reminded her that a knife was under her neck by pressing it against her skin.
Hilda chuckled. “You seriously think this is all about Lylah?”
“Wait, don't tell me,” Realization hit Brigid. "You're working for Toran?”
“A girl has to do whatever to earn money, don't you think, Brigid?”
Shock rippled through Brigid. No wonder Hilda kept diverting her attention to Toran, reminding her of how good he made her feel.
It was just a game.
That bastard Toran!!! Brigid seethed.
“It’s too late, Brigid. Well, the good thing is… you'll get a way to move Lylah out of the way. It's a win-win.”
“Stay away from her, you fucking bitch!” Brigid struggled, but the guard swept her feet off the ground and pinned her head to the floor, the knife still on her neck. This time it drew out some of her blood.
“Hey, Lylah,” Hilda turned her attention back to the wrecked girl, who had no sense of what was happening around her.
“Tell me all about Arianna’s secrets… what she really is and who her real mother is… spit it out, Lylah, sweetheart…”
Hilda smirked like a she devil, Brigid's eyes widened while Lylah's voice drawled again.
“Arianna Greystone… my sister… she…”
