“There are more Emissary guards. The ones in purple are from the East—it seems their Lord now supports Lord Valoreth,” Lylah explained after investigating the Citadel.
“That leaves two Lords. If Lord Lucas can win them to his side, that might buy us more time and if one more supports Lord Valoreth, then it's game over. The trial would hold,” Selene said as they walked down the hall.
It was the second day since Lord Valoreth had arrived at the palace. Nyra had left before sunrise, while the others searched for any possible way to distract or delay the trial.
“I still need to do more investigating. There should be an opening to get the book,” Lylah said, halting in her tracks.
“Be careful,” Selene warned before Lylah dashed off toward the barracks.
Sighing, Selene headed to Arianna’s chamber, where she found the female digging through books and scrolls, hoping to find anything useful.
“You're pushing yourself too hard, Arianna. Did you even sleep last night?”
“I've searched everywhere, Selene,” Arianna sighed, brushing off her concern. “None of these mentions anything about the Ouroboros.”
“The King seems to have some records in his observatory, but none of them say Drakora was the one who bestowed power on them to win the war. The ancient Lycans have no idea of that aspecy. They think it was the moon goddess,” Selene said, and Arianna looked up.
Arianna's eyes were tired, but she refused to rest.
“I guess I’ll go there, then,” Arianna said, forcing herself to stand by headache struck her head.
“No, my lady. Stay and rest.”
“I can't, Selene. The more I wait, the slimmer our chances get,” Arianna’s breath hitched—a clear sign that her body was sending a message: it needed rest.
Why did she feel so tired lately? She so much hated it.
“You shouldn’t push yourself too hard, especially—” Selene paused, hesitating, her eyes locking with Arianna’s. “Especially in your condition.”
“Huh?” Arianna questioned. “What do you mean, in my condition?”
••••••••••••••••
Lylah was heading back to the barracks, contemplating whether to ask Amy for help or not.
No. No one could know about their plan—not after what Brigid did to her. She would just have to find a way to get Amy's help without revealing the real reason.
Amy was a servant; she had more access to the guest sector than Lylah did.
However, as she reached the barracks, Lylah froze, eyes widening at the person standing a distance away in the hall.
She’s here.
That little whore of a bitch is here.
Brigid.
She stood with Isla, discussing something Lylah couldn’t hear over her thundering heart.
“Ah, Lylah,” Isla waved, prompting Brigid to turn and look at her too.
Brigid hesitated for a fleeting moment before forcing an awkward smile and waving as well.
Brigid is here… waving at her with a smile. Is this some kind of cruel shitty joke?
That expression on her face made Lylah’s stomach twist with disgust. What was Brigid expecting?
That she’d run to her and hug her like she was some kind of hero?
Tssk… nice one, Brigid.
After everything she had done, she had the nerve to come back and pretend to be her friend?
Lylah gritted her teeth, rage surging through every nerve ending.
Then a thought clicked in her mind. Lylah’s lips curled into a cruel, lovely smile—it must’ve looked creepy, but she didn’t care.
“Hey, Brigid!” her tone high pitched, lovely and sweet. Lylah waved with one hand, while the other secretly reached for the dagger at her waist as she began to approach.
'She doesn’t remember,' Brigid tried to assure herself—until Isla spoke.
“Lylah said some weird things about you. She was craving to see you so badly, I thought maybe you two were on bad terms—at least, that’s how Amy explained it.”
Brigid's brows furrowed. Wait… could it be…?
Just as she turned her head to look back at Lylah, the girl was already in the air—dagger gleaming in the sunlight.
“Welcome back, Brigid,” Lylah muttered with a dangerous smirk, sinking the dagger right into her shoulder.
Brigid roared in pain, her wolf instincts kicking in. She swung a fist at Lylah, but the girl ducked, yanked the dagger from Brigid’s shoulder, stabbed her in the waist, then delivered a brutal punch to Brigid’s jaw—sending her flipping backward into the wall with a loud thud.
The strength shocked Lylah—but she didn’t care. Clenching her fists, she started toward Brigid again, but Isla wrapped her arms around her, stopping her.
“What the fuck, Lylah?!”
“Let go of me! Let me kill that bitch!” Lylah screamed, struggling against Isla’s hold.
The female warrior had half-shifted just to restrain her.
Brigid, meanwhile, stared in shock—shoulder, waist, and lip bleeding. Tears welled in her eyes.
“Oh, now you’re crying?!” Lylah shouted, her own tears flowing. “Why?! Brigid, fucking tell me why?!!!”
Brigid whimpered as the impact of those words.
“What did I ever do so wrong that you used me against the one person I love most?! Huh?! My only family!!! Someone I swore to protect—and you made me the reason she’s in danger now!!!”
Lylah’s voice cracked, heavy with fury, heartbreak, and bitter disappointment.
“My head won't stop throbbing with these questions! Tell me, how the hell did Toran get to you?! Huh?! Did he wrap your little slutty figure in his fucking bed?!”
"Lylah!" Isla called.
Brigid shut her eyes—and that was all the answer Lylah needed.
“I was right, huh? You fucking whore,” Lylah chuckled bitterly, more tears spilling down her cheeks.
She struggled harder against Isla.
“Lylah! Snap out of it!” Isla yelled, alarmed by the wild strength Lylah was beginning to show. She signaled for two nearby warriors to help restrain her.
The fear in Brigid’s eyes brought Lylah a dark sense of satisfaction.
That’s right. The bitch should be scared.
Because as long as Lylah lived, she’d hunt her like a storm ready to swallow her whole.
“And to think you were the first female I ever called a friend—aside from my sister! Yet you betrayed me, came back here, and expected a fucking hug?!” Lylah growled again.
Grinding her teeth, she seethed, “Nah. Keep crossing my path and I’ll gladly give you more stabs. And if by any fucking chance something happens to my sister, Brigid…”
The growled turned too dark and deep...
“I’M GONNA BE THE ONE TO FUCKING KILL YOU!!!”
