“Excited, huh? I hope that look stays on your face as we go on,” Lucas commented.
Lylah bowed deeply, wearing a bright smile. “Thank you, oh great Lord Lucas!”
Lucas’s face remained stoic. “Get back to your chamber. I’ll let you know when training begins, but for now…” He tossed her a dagger, and she caught it swiftly. “Get used to that. Learn it. Master it until it becomes part of you.”
Lylah gazed down at the dagger with a smile, her eyes lingering on every detail. It was crafted from fine, sharp moonsteel; its hilt wrapped in black leather. It was slightly heavy, but with enough practice, she was sure it would feel light in her hand.
She looked up to thank him, but he was gone—as if he had never been there.
••••••••••••
{OUTSIDE THE PALACE... INN}
“Drink! Drink! Drink!”
The cheers grew louder at the inn packed with rowdy patrons. Tankards, with a thick scent of ale, slammed against the wooden table as two men competed against one another.
Duncan and another built man, like an ox.
Arianna stood among the people, staring in bewilderment. Who would have thought the King had this other side to him?
“You sure you can keep up, Traveler?” The man before Duncan slurred. Unlike him, who was now seeing double, Duncan drank his ale without a problem.
No one could scent Duncan as a Lycan due to the scent suppressant; they all saw him as a commoner.
“Are you sure you want to continue?” Duncan asked in a thick voice that made some women squeal and drool over him. Arianna glared at them.
Duncan’s opponent chugged more ale, but he reached his limit and collapsed onto the table.
A roar echoed through the place—Duncan had won.
“Ah... that was boring,” Duncan mumbled as they sat by the innkeeper's side, watching two new contestants start another drinking competition.
“Are you kidding me?" Arianna's voice tinged with so much excitement. "That was insane! How could you drink like that?”
One would think she was like a son or a little brother beside Duncan. But to Duncan, she was freaking cute and he liked the way she was now free with him.
He could do this all day.
“I'm a Lycan. I don't get drunk,” Duncan replied with a shrug. “The effect is nothing.”
“Ah... I see." Arianna nodded understanding. Then she suddenly requested. "Can I have an ale?”
“No.”
“What? Why?" Arianna gasped. When he didn't reply, she poured. "Please Dun.” Arianna pouted her lips, making Duncan’s eyes flash with gold sighting the way her lips called for his attention.
“Don't do that, or I might fuck you,” he warned in a hushed voice, making Arianna swallow, heat creeping onto her cheek. “And I don't want people to think I'm into men; I have a huge reputation, remember?”
Arianna looked down at her attire and barked out laughter. Her sound was so sweet and lively, mingling with the music in the background.
Fuck!
He let himself savour the sweetness.
“Two cups of ale, please,” he finally ordered, his voice smooth and attractive.
Arianna at the other hand fell for it. She couldn't get tired of hearing that deep charming sound.
Arianna clapped her hands in excitement, giggling as the drinks were set before her.
When the liquor came, she chugged it all in one breath, her throat bobbing as it sank in.
After that, she slammed the goblet onto the table and looked up at a stunned Duncan, who blinked at what she just did. Amusement danced in his gaze.
“What? You think a lady can't drink? I do this whenever I want to act crazy.” She slid her chair back, standing.
Offering her hand to him, she asked in a sweet voice, “Wanna dance, Your Highness?”
Duncan glanced down at her hand and then back at her face. “Nah. I wanna kiss you."
In the next moment, Duncan slammed Arianna against the wall of the empty privy in the inn. His mouth took hers deep and hard.
Arianna moaned into his mouth, her hands clinging onto him tight.
For the first time in several weeks of drowning in pain, struggles, anxiety, and many emotions that made her feel terrible about her fate… this was the first time she felt it was all worth it.
It was all because of the male.
He was perfect and full of surprises.
Duncan had her legs wrapped around his firm torso, his cock slamming in and out of her as he fucked her against the wall hard. Her slutty moans were suppressed by his lips ravishing hers.
She climbed higher and then climaxed with a loud moan. Duncan released inside her, and for a moment, just a fleeting moment, his gaze flicked to her neck.
His fangs ached, an odd urge to bite her struck him…
No.
Duncan shut his eyes, shoving that thought back to its depths. Marking her meant he wanted her to have his child… his heir.
A female can only bear a child of her male if they are marked and claimed.
“What is wrong, Dun?” she asked in a whisper, concern.
Duncan replied her with a warm, gentle kiss before leading her out.
An old man who seemed to be waiting saw them, stunned. He shook his head lightly. Arianna glanced down at her male attire and immediately knew what the man was thinking.
Duncan on the other hand didn't mind. Holding her close, he led her out.
“Stay here; I'll go pay and get back to you,” he whispered and kissed her forehead, making Arianna blush hard. She bit her lips, feeling her heart flutter.
Her gaze swept through the inn, people laughing and chatting, the air stenched with ale and meals. Her smile dropped upon sighting a particular table—men there were staring at her. Hard and intense. Desire swirling in their gazes as they whispered to each other.
Arianna knew her attire didn’t really conceal her feminine features because she was endowed. Many were bound to notice if they looked closer.
Feeling uncomfortable, Arianna decided to step away from their gaze but bumped into a chest. The person groaned, anger clear in his voice.
“Watch where you're going!”
Arianna immediately froze. That voice! That scent! That presence.
She recognized them all!
Her world spun. Everything seemed frozen and suddenly too suffocating. He was behind her.
She wanted to believe it was just a trick of her mind, but then his voice came again.
“Aren’t you going to apologize?!” the male growled.
The blood drained from Arianna’s face. That was really his voice. Slowly, with her heart racing, Arianna turned to look at him, locking gaze with the male she hadn't seen in a long while.
Kael. Her bastard ex-mate.
